Miracle Man
This is a quick scene from an AU fic I've been fiddling with for a while, and basically, it's the J&A guys at a six week stay-over summer camp in the woods, styled after similar summer camps that are very common in the US. I went to one myself a couple summers when I was younger, which is what a lot of the fic is based off of. Everyone is also aged down 12 years from their current ages, so Miyata and Tamamori are 11 and 10 here, and Mabo is 23. And with that in mind, here you are!
"Promise we'll bunk together this year again," Miyata chirps, swinging their joined hands back and forth. Tamamori doesn't answer him apart from an absent nod as he looks around at the sea of boys.
“Next!” comes the call, and Miyata tugs Tamamori forward to the table.
“Miyata Toshiya and Tamamori Yuta!” he says brightly, grinning.
“Miyata Toshiya...” The counselor sitting behind the table runs a finger down the list; Miyata can just see the badge that says “Mabo” and he blinks at the odd name. “Okay, you’re in Cabin Four,” he says as he checks Miyata’s name off. He nudges the counselor next to him, who then digs through the box in front of him until he finds a large envelope with “Miyata” written on it. “And Tamamori Yuta?” He consults the list again and checks off Tamamori as well. “You’ll be in Cabin Five. Your envelopes have your name badges and sign ups for your first session of classes, which you need to hand in this afternoon...” he starts.
“Excuse me, err, Mabo-san?” Miyata asks shyly, worried about interrupting him.
“Yes?”
“Umm, is there any way me and Tama can be in the same cabin?” he asks just as shyly, still clinging to Tama’s hand.
“You want to switch cabins? Hold on.” Miyata watches with wide eyes as he goes over to the man he vaguely recognizes as the head of the camp from the year before. They talk for a bit before waving over another counselor. Finally after a nerve-wracking couple of minutes they return. “Alright, Higashi okayed it and Goro-san is okay with adding another kid, so you’ll both be in Cabin Five now. Now go get settled in, and don’t forget to get your sign ups filled out after lunch!”
“Thank you!” Miyata says loudly, bowing and tugging Tamamori to do the same.
“Get going you two,” Matsuoka says with a laugh.
“Thanks!” Miyata says again before tugging Tamamori away from the table. “See, I promised we’d bunch together again,” he tells Tamamori proudly.
Tamamori just nods as they walk to their cabin, still holding hands. “Miyacchi makes miracles.”
