danger, such a fun theme :D
vague Naruto!AU, just because :x Don't need prior knowledge of it though.
Vague blood/gore/death description. (There isn't a proper warning tag for this stuff yet though, I think?)
Each sting hurts more than the previous one, but Ueda grits his teeth and pulls every last senbon from his limbs.
"You could always let me do it," Nakamaru says reproachfully, ever the perfect medic. He pushes up his forehead protector over his sweaty forehead and frowns.
"Keep watch," Ueda mutters. "There's no knowing if they'll come back."
"I'm not good at that, it was always Kame's job-"
"Kame's gone now!" Ueda hisses, chucking a senbon across the forest floor in frustration. "He's gone! And the people who did that to him nearly did the same thing to us and they might be back so just keep watch, bloody hell."
He's tired and irritable, partially due to the fact that they haven't had much sleep since starting their pursuit. but also because those guys have done something unforgivable to one of his precious people and he hates to know that he was too weak to prevent it.
Some leader I am, he thinks sourly as he roughly yanks a bandage over one of the deeper cuts on his arm.
The forest is silent, eerily so, and Ueda is tense even as he deals with his wounds as much as his extremely stunted medical knowledge will allow. Suddenly, Nakamaru starts as a rustle sounds in a patch of bush not too far away.
"Careful," he whispers as he watches Ueda stagger to his feet out of the corner of his eye.
"'Course," Ueda returns, favouring one leg and easing his katana's familiar grip back into his hand.
And then there is the raw battle cry, and suddenly the two guys from before run out amidst a hail of flying needles. Ueda dodges them as best as he can, but as he tries to escape to the safety of the trees ten needles fly at his legs and render them nerveless, causing him to fall back down again.
Landing heavily on his behind, he flings three throwing knives and hears a grunt. He's hit his target, it seems, and he allows himself a small smile.
The hail stops, but there is now one person running up behind Nakamaru with a huge cleaver in his hands.
"Maru!"
His shout is raw from panic at the thought of losing his only remaining teammate, and Nakamaru turns at his call, shock stamped upon his face.
But then suddenly there is a field knife in Nakamaru's hands and he swings up as the guy swings down, and suddenly there is a head rolling across the forest ground. Not that Ueda notices because he's focusing on all the blood, blood that has been flung all over the forest. He's not sure if it's Nakamaru's or the other guy's, but it's sticky and coppery and the colour of danger, of death.
He never hears the familiar voice call, seemingly from far away, as his vision fades to black.
((leavin' the ending up to you - who died and who lived? :D;))
Senbon = the longer and thicker version of acupuncture needles, I guess? Throwing needles. Somewhat.
Katana = sword.
Forehead protector = that metal thing that ninja all seem to wear on their foreheads.
You're up,
miquilis! :3
