[Team 2] Partners

Honest to God but I'm not entirely sure what this is... >_>;; I spent the entire time writing this listening to f(x)'s Electric Shock but I'm not sure that even factored into me writing this...

I hope I didn't disappoint you, [livejournal.com profile] crazy_otaku911 8D;;

Also, happy new year, awesome fellow shiritori writers! 2013年もよろしくお願いします~!

Fujigaya prepares for battle, strapping a dagger around his midriff under his clothes, because he knows there could be no other outcome for this mission. Even if Yokoo had thought of a solution to every potential scenario, it still hinged on far too many assumptions on how their target would react. There were too many variables, too many potential pitfalls.

All the same, he wishes that the actual outcome will not be half as pessimistic as he predicts because a fight is the last thing he wants, not with Kitayama still stuck in hospital with a broken arm and leg from their last mission. It's not that he can't fight without Kitayama – he can, very well in fact – but the other man was the only person on their team that could read his movements and match it so that their attacks were doubly effective.

It hadn't always been that way though.

When he had first met Kitayama, he had hated the other's guts for no other reason than the fact that Kitayama had been appointed team captain.

He didn't understand. For all intents and purposes, he was Kitayama's senior, having been in the Agency far longer than the other. He had graduated from the Academy with flying colours, had always been first pick as back-up for active agents and he had never once let them down. So why was Kitayama the team captain and not him?

His resentment grows when Kitayama broke his cover during a delicate operation, jeopardising the entire mission. Of course, they still manage to meet the basic mission protocol – to take down the gang leaders – but on the journey back to HQ, he snaps.

"I can look after myself, thank you very much," he spat venomously.

"I know you can," Kitayama responded, his voice neutral, neither rising to Fujigaya's bait nor casually dismissing him.

"Then why did you break your cover?" he exclaimed.

It was Senga who answered, looking at him from across the van as though Fujigaya was being really stupid. "Do you know where that shot would have hit if Kitayama hadn't broken his cover and pushed you away?"

Fujigaya blinked, not even having been aware that a shot had even been fired.

"You're so focused on what you had to do," began Yokoo from the driver's seat, "that you had zoned out your surroundings. They had placed a sniper up in the rafters of the warehouse, and his rifle was aimed right at the back of your neck. We could see that you didn't know he was there, but there was no way of communicating the knowledge to you. Kitayama saw him pull the trigger, which is why he broke cover and pulled you down. After that... Well, you know what happened afterwards."

"A sniper…?"

"You're lucky Kitamitsu saw him pull that trigger," added Nikaido, tiredly pressed against Senga's side. He had been the one that had taken out the sniper first before any further harm could be inflicted on his teammates. "He was really high up in the rafters and it was pretty dark up there. Kitamitsu's eye sight is amazing."

The other members made noises of agreement, and Fujigaya turned to look at their captain, his eyes wide with incredulousness.

After that, Fujigaya complained less about Kitayama's appointment as team captain, especially after he wandered into the other's office to file a report only to find him buried under stacks and stacks of paper.

"What the…?!"

"End of year report," Kitayama grunted, tiredly looking between his computer and a thick wad of paper.

Fujigaya simply put down the report he had gone in to submit before high-tailing it out of the room.

"I'm glad I was not appointed captain," he announced to the rest of his team when the others gathered in their common room for a break.

("I'm glad he wasn't appointed captain too, tea-san," Tamamori had said in response after Fujigaya left. Miyata snorted, choking on his drink.)

The first time the fight together, it had been rather unexpected.

One moment, the mission was going smoothly, the next his target was flying towards him with a fist raised. He dodged, twisting his body to the side to avoid the fist which connected with air where his face would have been, and then threw a punch of his own. It hit his opponent in the stomach, but as his opponent had rock hard abs, he felt his fingers tingle painfully. He jumped backwards, narrowly missing another fist aimed for this face, and proceeded to trip over a randomly placed sandbag.

Suddenly, Kitayama was behind his opponent, aiming a roundhouse kick at his neck which connected soundly, sending him flying across the room and crashing into a wall of wooden crates nearby. His opponent is knocked out cold, slumped in the debris, and Nikaido and Senga drags him away.

"You need to work on your hand to hand combat," commented Kitayama, a hand held out to pull him up. "You're a spy – your job is to get close to the target. Hand to hand combat will sometimes be the only defence that you have."

From then on, Fujigaya would ask Kitayama to spar with him when they both had spare time because Kitayama had been the one to raise the issue. The older man never complained once, simply accepting this duty as he did every other duty. (He did make Fujigaya pay for dinner, though, every time practise ran too late.)

And it was during these training sessions that they developed a bond, a mutual understanding of how each other's mind worked during fights. Fujigaya learnt to read little hints that would clue him into what move Kitayama would use next, and he would match it – either to counter it during training or to complement it during actual combat.

"We did good," grinned Kitayama after the first fight they fight together, and Fujigaya agreed, bumping his fist against Kitayama's. "To many more fights, partner."

But Kitayama was injured now, sitting in a hospital bed and whining about lack of decent food, and Fujigaya prepares for a fight, taking extra care to hide weapons that might help him because Kitayama won't be there to cover his back this time.

YOUR TURN, RIN. 8D

DON't DIE FUJIGAYA 8C

Aw, but I like all the jealousy that turns into bickering camaraderie. \o/ (Tea-san!) ♥ I also like the story of how they start, with how Fujigaya was too focused and he totes would have died BUT KITAYAMA SAVES HIM. Teehee ♥ And Kitayama making Fujigaya feed him to make up for the time they spend sparring.

But don't die, Gaya 8C
