[Team 3] Life Lessons

I had no idea what to write, and then Yokoo stared balefully at me from my calendar.

“What have the two of you been up to?” Yokoo asked, taking a sip of his beer.

Across the table Shige smiled. “I managed to get a job at a law firm a few months ago.”

“We’re both working in town!” piped in Koyama.

It was the first time the three of them were meeting since graduation last year. Kato Shigeaki and Koyama Keiichiro were Yokoo’s closest friends - they had met one day in their first year of university and somehow remained together since. After graduation, however, they each had their own paths to follow, and Yokoo’s hadn’t coincided with either Shige’s or Koyama’s. Yokoo had been meaning to contact the two, but there was always been something stopping him. Time. Fear. More time.

Now that he was seeing them in the flesh, drinking beer and laughing with them, the weight of all the excuses looming over him seemed to have lifted. Now that he was with them again, he no longer felt as though he needed to hide. He felt free. Happy, even.

“What about you, Wataru?” Koyama asked, breaking through Yokoo’s thoughts.

They continued to laugh and banter throughout the night, sharing long overdue stories over countless beers. Yokoo marvelled at the fact that even after such a long period of time, the atmosphere was still comfortable and familiar and welcoming. He basked in this for a moment, watching in amusement as Shige made wild attempts to prevent a very drunk Koyama from ordering yet another drink - “But Shige, it has an umbrella!” - before the youngest turned to him with a sympathetic glance.

“How have you been? It’s been a while.”

To stall for time, Yokoo watched and waited until Koyama happily returned to his seat, bright green cocktail (with an umbrella) in hand.

“I, uh, met someone,” he managed to splutter out. He ducked his head in embarrassment as he felt his face turning pink. Cheers were emitted, congratulatory pats were given, nearly causing both he and Koyama to spill their drinks, and a bombardment of questions; “Who is it?”, “Why didn’t you tell us sooner?”, “Why didn’t you bring him along?”

Yokoo coughed, still highly aware of his flushed face. “His name is Fujigaya Taisuke. He’s a doctor.”

“Why didn’t he come tonight?” Koyama asked again, pouting into his glass. “I want to meet him.”

Happiness welled up inside Yokoo’s heart. In the quietest corners of his mind, he had indeed been hoping to make introductions some time in the future. “He’s working late tonight,” he replied.

“That’s a shame. I hope we’ll be able to meet him soon.”

Yokoo nodded, smiling back at Shige, before taking another sip. Later, once the two of them had successfully hauled Koyama into Shige’s car and bid farewell, Yokoo would go home to a waiting Fujigaya, and tell him what tonight had taught him.
