[Team One] Congratulations on Your Prize!

Episode 4 of Kamen Teacher revealed something interesting about Bon, Taiga's character. xD Whilst I am 99% sure this is not a major plot spoiler for the drama, it is a minor character spoiler, so consider yourself warned. :3

Side by side they perched, the two most coveted animals in the display. One, a fluffy sheep with fur as white as snow, the other a magnificent downy alpaca. Bon couldn’t take his eyes off them.

“They’re the only two that I need from this machine!” he gasped, voice muffled by the glass his face was currently pressed against.

Bon had just been about to leave the arcade - there were only so many toys a boy could carry, after all - when he passed by a machine that had just been restocked, eyes immediately drawn to the two rare animals. Bon glanced forlornly at the mountain of soft toys he had dropped. They weren't as exciting as they had been before the sheep and the alpaca had crossed his path.

One more peek at the display was all it took. Steeling himself, Bon positioned himself in front of the joystick. After determining happily that the two prizes were in a good location he fished some coins out of his pocket and started the machine.

The first three rounds proved fruitless, but Bon was a seasoned patron of the arcade and wasn’t bothered in the slightest. The fourth attempt, however, saw him pick up the fluffy sheep with the claw and drop it into the chute.

“YES!” he screamed, springing back from the joystick and jumping with glee. Suddenly aware of dirty looks being thrown his way, he coughed in embarrassment, bowing in apology, but Bon couldn't resist one more fist pump before claiming his prize. The sheep was in his arms in no time, his faced buried in its silky fur.

The sheep was so soft Bon thought he could cradle it forever, but there was one more prize seeking his attention. Regretfully after one last stroke of its fur, he set the sheep down on top of the other toys and prepared himself for another battle.

The alpaca was slightly harder to get, with seven futile rounds. On the eighth, he got closer, the tip of the claw brushing gently against the end of a small, brown ear. By now, Bon was hunched over the joystick, sweat dripping down his forehead, his eyes dry as a result from minimal blinking. He sighed, frustrated. He was close - it wouldn't be long now. Bon took a step back, rubbing his eyes. One or two more rounds were all he needed, he guessed.

A few star jumps and deep breathing exercises later, Bon felt readier than ever.

"Yosh," he muttered to himself. "Let's do this."

The familiar sounds of the machine starting up filled his ears, and Bon vanquished all thoughts from his mind, concentrating solely on the object of his desire. The claw rose from its resting point and his hand moved instinctively. Eyes never leaving the toy, he manoeuvred the contraption expertly, heart hammering against his chest and a lump forming in his throat. The claw's jaw was wide open, inching closer and closer and --

"AAAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Somewhere in between shrieking and crying, the image of Araki-sensei swirled into vision. Sometime after this came the realisation that he was also screaming, which accounted for the deafening sound filling his ears.

"Why did you scream?!" Araki-sensei asked once they had composed themselves.

"Because you scared me!" Bon yelled back. "Why did you scream?!"

"Because you screamed!"

Bon had opened his mouth to retort that it was all sensei's fault in the first place, because who claps someone on the shoulder when they're concentrating on something very important, when he was interrupted by frenzied whirring noises and a robotic female voice that seemed to come from the machine.

"Congratulations on your prize!"

His look of anger turned into one of incredulity and then excitement. Had he really won? He dimly remembered yanking down the joystick in fright, but it hadn't occurred to Bon that it had actually worked.

"Oh, Bon, you won something!" Araki-sensei exclaimed. "Congratulations! What is it? Even I'm getting excited!"

Bon took just enough time to spare his teacher a withering glance before plunging his hand into the compartment. He brushed against something soft and furry. He let out a delighted laugh. He couldn't believe it. Next to him, Araki-sensei was also beaming happily.

The first thing Bon noticed when he pulled the soft toy out of the hatch was that it was dark brown in colour, and not white as he expected. The second thing were its large, floppy ears protruding from his head and the third, the two large teeth protruding from its mouth. Speechless, all Bon could do was to stare at the toy in his hands, dumbfounded.

"Oh! It's a beaver! It's so cute! I'm a little jealous now, heh."

Inexplicable anger suddenly washed over Bon, his joy disappearing as suddenly as it had come. He wanted an alpaca, not a stupid beaver. The more he looked at it, the more he wanted to punch it in its stupid, buck-toothed face.

"Uh, Bon? What's wrong?" Araki-sensei questioned.

With a growl he pressed the beaver into his teacher's hands.

"Here, you have it," he muttered, picking up the results of today's arcade haul. Hoisting his bag over his shoulder, Bon stalked off, ignoring his teacher's surprised thanks. He would just have to try again another day.
