[Team 1] Haunted by Memories

It's the 15th, so I'm going to assume that [livejournal.com profile] sparklynoodles is skipping her turn and take mine >_<

I've been watching Kyoukai no Kanata recently, which is an anime about Spirit World Warriors who hunt these creatures called Dreamshades (or Youmus), and I said that I wanted to write a Kyoukana AU in my next shiritori so here we are~!

Night fell, and immediately Yara's Warrior senses heightened, tracking and tracing the movements of Dreamshades that only came out to play at night. There were several tonight - bigger fries than the ones they had been hunting recently - but too few: something was happening.

He parted the partially closed metal slats of the venetian blinds with two fingers, peering out into the dark night. "Ryota, I need you to set up a barrier around the town tonight," he ordered quietly. "Something big is coming our way."

"Okay," responded Ryota. He closed his eyes and immediately set to work, building up a barrier around their small town. When he was done, he opened his eyes again and looked at Yara. "Will you and Tatsumi be going out hunting tonight?"

"Of cou-!" Tatsumi began to enthusiastically answer, but he was cut off by a quick "No" from their eldest.

"No," Yara repeated, turning away from the window. There was forcefulness behind his words, as though he was trying to hide something. "If something big is coming, I can't leave you here by yourself. I won't."

Ryota smiled at the insistence in Yara's voice and he knew exactly where it was stemming from. But he didn't want Yara to put aside his job, his responsibilities, just for him, no matter how painful the idea of leaving Ryota alone was.

Rising from where he had been kneeling in front of the low table, he padded over to where the older man was sitting and sat down. He leaned over so that his head rested against Yara's shoulder, and covered Yara's right hand with his left.

"It's going to be okay, Yaracchi," he said softly, his voice comforting. "It's not going to be like last time. This time, I can definitely protect myself."

Yara turned his right hand over and linked his fingers with Ryota's, closing the grasp and tightening almost until it hurt. He tilted his head so it knocked gently against the younger man's. "I can't lose you, Ryota," he whispered. "I can't."

"And you won't," Ryota comforted. "I'll be okay by myself, and you'll come back from this hunt and I'll still be here. Everything will be okay, Yaracchi - I promise."

Then he pressed a kiss to Yara's cheek as a gesture of reassurance.

Tatsumi, who had gone to the other room to gear up, returned to the living room, holding up Yara's twin blades as he came in. "All ready?"

Ryota squeezed Yara's hand one more time before standing up, pulling Yara along.

At the door, Yara reluctantly pulled his shoes on then took the blades Tatsumi held out to him.

"Come back safely," he wished, "both of you."
