[team one] |238007 ((reboot))
A follow-on from this AU which I started two years ago and never had the chance to develop further. I couldn't pick what to do, so I got 'future' and 'urban' from people and this was the result.
~
Together again, the patrol unit Y-Rt1114 felt himself reboot. Except… something was off. It didn't feel like normal.
His internal fans started whirring as they kicked into overdrive.
"Because we've separated you from the system. It'll take you some time to adjust."
<@Y-Rt1114> Who are you? How can you communicate while offline?
"Command, voice. At user Y, dash, R, T, one one one four."
<+Y-Rt1114> I have a voice?
"Yes, you do. Try to use it."
"How?"
"Like that." There was a shift in the mood of the other party, the tracker unit that wasn't a tracker unit which had identified itself as the nonexistent Y-Tmyk0201. Y-Rt1114 could not rationalise how this information came to him, yet it was evident all the same.
"Whois Y, dash, T, M, Y, K, oh two oh one."
"It won't work like that. I'm Yara Tomoyuki."
"Yara Tomoyuki?"
"Yes. We knew each other, once, before."
"Before?"
A pause. Y-Rt1114 assumed that Y-Tmy-- no, that Yara was processing the data. "Do you remember… nothing? Before you were the patrol unit?"
"I existed before then?"
Silence.
When Yara's voice returned, there was a strange colour to it. "Yes," he said. "You did."
More silence, while Y-Rt1114 processed this. "Whowas Y-Rt1114?"
"…You were Yamamoto Ryota. Birthday, November 14th. You had none of these extra sensors or electrical apparatuses attached. You were a human being, existing outside the system."
"Outside?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Another pause. "Can you disengage your ocular sensor? It's useless right now, anyway."
Y-Rt1114 processed this. "What purpose would disengagement serve."
"Just… try it."
He tried it.
All was a blur.
Things hurt.
All was not a blur.
More was focus.
Things began to hurt less.
loading… loading…
All was focus.
Pain was a dull throb.
"…Where is this?"
"You're outside the system." That was Yara, Yara Tomoyuki, looking down at him from one of five faces staring anxiously in his direction. Yara Tomoyuki, the closest of the five. Yara Tomoyuki, with sharp eyes and a face weathered with concern. Concern? Concern. Y-Rt1114 did not question how he knew this.
"How?"
Yara's expression softened. "We kidnapped you." Then, "No, no, we didn't. We stole you back."
Electrical signals; Y-Rt1114's visual interface flickered with confusion. "Back?"
"Yes, Ryota. We broke in, and found you, and brought you home."
Ryota. Y-Rt1114. Me. Broke in? Found? Home?
One of the other four faces glanced at Yara and shook his head, to which Yara nodded in return.
"Enough for now, Ryota," Yara said. "Go back to sleep."
Sleep. A command Y-Rt1114 understood.
"Command QUIT."
Yara shook his head. "Try closing your eyes first," he said.
Ryota closed his eyes, and sunk into a light oblivion.
