"... Seven was thought to be a lucky number," said the teacher in her lilting voice, "so every year on the seventh day of the seventh moon, Zhi Nu and Niu Lang would meet."
Sehun smiled indulgently as he leaned against the doorway into the small classroom, his arms crossed over his chest and legs crossed at his ankles. His lips were curled up into a small, secretive smile and his eyes were fixed on the teacher, just like all of the children she was telling the story to, all of them enchanted by the soothing tone of her narration.
"All year they would pray for good weather because if it rained, the river would flood and they wouldn't be able to see each other." At that, the little girls made a noise of protest and the woman laughed, her eyes curving into two crescent moon shapes. "Yes, it's unfair, but their prayers for good weather is nearly always heard by the Gods so the weather is often very beautiful on the day of their meeting."
The little girls cheered.
Just then, a small hand shot into the air and the teacher nodded to her. "What if we prayed for them too?" she asked.
The teacher chuckled quietly and answered, "They say that if Zhi Nu and Niu Lang meet, then everyone who makes a wish on that day will have their wish come true."
"So if we prayed for them to meet then we can have our wish come true on Qixi?" another little girl asked, her large eyes wide with curiosity.
"Yes," the teacher replied firmly.
"How do you know?" a third girl asked, mystified.
The teacher, as though sensing Sehun's presence in the doorway, turned to look at the intruder, and her expression brightened, her smile pulling so wide her cheek dimpled deeply. Her students, at seeing her expression, looked round in surprise because they'd never seen their teacher look like she did in that moment.
"Teacher?" the first little girl prompted.
The teacher jolted a little, and turned back to look at her students. Her expression had lost a little of its brightness but there was still so much joy there, and her voice sounded a little choked when she opened her mouth to say, "Because it happened to me. I prayed for Zhi Nu and Niu Lang to meet on Qixi, and that year the weather was so beautiful. Then, on that evening, I went to the festival with my boyfriend and I wished that we could find our happiness."
And Sehun felt his heart skip a beat as he thought back to all those years ago, when he and Yixing had wandered through the night market on the night of Qixi. She had stopped in front of the wishing tree for longer than any of the other couples he had seen that night - so long that five couples had come, made their wishes and left before she had finally opened her eyes again.
Now he knew what she had wished for.
"Did you?"
Yixing looked over at Sehun, and nodded fervently. "Yes," she whispered. "We've definitely found our happiness."
