"But I want to keep you safe too." Miyata offers as explanation for why he's here, why he's fighting Tamamori's fight for him.

There's an echo to the words and Tamamori remembers them just as the gun goes click — then bang.

10.

"I want to keep you safe." and it's an idiotic thing to say - he only just met the boy - but the words are out before Tamamori can catch them as if they're not his own.

Miyata - the new kid - smiles wide and bloody in reply. The split lip stains his mouth red. It's a welcoming gift from one of the other boys. It will be a daily gift too until Miyata learns his place in the school.

9.

A rival school defaces their sign and it starts a war. Personal vendettas are put aside in a momentary truce as they all must unite as a class against a common enemy. Everyone but Tamamori forgets about the new kid.

8.

Miyata learns to hide. He eats lunch on the roof alone. He hides in a bathroom stall for 30 minutes at the end of each day to avoid the boys that wait at the school gate looking for any fight to pass the time.

Tamamori learns all of Miyata's hiding spots and always knows where to find him.

7.

The punch hits hard, straight and strong into the centre of his solar plexus. For a moment in the aftershock Tamamori can't breath. Can't see as pain squeezes his eyes shut. Can't think.

But he can still hit back.

6.

"You could stay." Miyata starts, hanging back a few steps behind as Tamamori pauses in the genkan, hand rested on the door handle. "That anime I told you about has a new episode tonight."

"Idiot." Tamamori grouses under his breath. Miyata knows where he needs to be tonight, knows what he needs to do.

"The plot's really good." And Tamamori can here the plea.

His hand falls back down to his side.

5.

Tamamori can make an opponent back down with nothing but a silent slow glare. A blaze of cold fury. Somedays he doesn't even need to touch the other boy to win the fight.

Yet - Miyata never flinches or looks away when he's on the receiving end.

4.

It has to be a secret - not for shame or stigma - but because Miyata is a weakness Tamamori can't show.

3.

Boys will be boys they say. That they're children puffing out their chests, pretending to be larger than they are. They'll calm down as they grow up.

Maybe it is all a game but the stakes still seem so real.

2.

The cherry blossoms fall and graduation season starts. Teachers talk of universities. His parents, more realistic, talk of jobs. Miyata talks of the second button of his uniform.

1.

Gentle as always Miyata's touch is both a balm and a distraction as he cleans and wraps Tamamori's fresh cuts and scrapes. Fingers ghost over and inspect each new blooming purple bruise.

In the 10 months that Tamamori has known Miyata he's never once seen him so quiet and serious.
