Team One // So much for my happy ending

So I totally didn't need this to happen to me, but I accidentally drowned myself in Winner and this isn't even very Winner, but whatever. (Tao why.) (Also yes I stole this title from Avril Lavigne...)

On the sidewalk, his thoughts racing with the traffic, it had sounded like a great idea. The grand climax of a story, the final act of a hero to prove himself, the final dash to a happy ending. It had all sounded perfect in his head, orchestrated with the night lights of the city.

But in the here and now, it was muted and muddled, words stuck in his throat with a swirl of satin and velvet and softer glow.

“Sehunnie!” Zitao exclaimed with a gleeful laugh, throwing his arms around him with a tight squeeze. “Geez, you’re late, I was afraid you were going to bail on me.” Over his shoulder, Minho watched with a smile and an easy grin, holding two drinks – the cosmopolitan was Zitao’s, of course. Unseen, hidden in his pocket, was a small box with a pretty ring that Sehun knew Zitao was going to love.

(And Sehun realized that maybe he’d run towards the wrong happy ending, the one that he didn’t belong in.)

“Idiot,” Sehun said, face smoothing away any unusual emotion as he stepped out of Zitao’s embrace a few moments later. “You’re getting old, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

“Asshole.”

“Damn right.”

“I’m glad you could make it,” Minho added, looping an arm around Zitao’s waist after the two had parted, letting Zitao chortle into his drink, amused for whatever reason had struck his fancy. But Minho spoke with sincerity and maybe that was the worst part of it.

“Like I said,” Sehun said, lips forming a smile while his heart clenched painfully. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Two years, too late, after all.

Later, he watched Minho go down on one knee. He watched Zitao shriek in surprise and then burst into tears, throwing his arms around his boyfriend and sobbing out a stream of ‘yes’s.

He watched Zitao’s happy ending unfold without him.
