[Team Three] Asleep and not

This is a blurb set in my Dreamwalker Universe (my not!NaNo-fic).

Waiting for the other made Sakuma feel a little anxious. He knew he had no reason to - they had just parted ways a few hours ago and he’d only received the last LINE message from the other a few minutes before he’d fallen asleep but still, he couldn’t help it. People kept telling him that he should be the first one to feel at ease about it, considering he would be the first to feel it if something was wrong but it was the opposite. The knowledge that he’d be the first to feel something put him on edge constantly. He was dreading the moment when he would feel something. Of course he didn’t tell other people that.

Unable to sit still, Sakuma wandered around the gardens. Yuma was around somewhere but the other was probably busy. As was everyone else. And as chatty and sociable Sakuma usually was, right now he somehow felt the need to be alone for a little bit.

He reached a small pond. It reflected the sky so clearly, Sakuma had almost thought that a part of it had been embedded into the earth. Something entirely possible in the Dream World.

Stepping closer, he looked at his reflection. He wasn’t vain and didn’t spend a lot of time in front of a mirror. Sometimes he wouldn’t even check his own appearance much before going to university in the morning, or whenever he rolled out of bed. As long as he looked acceptable, it was okay.

Ever since the incident, this was the first time he was taking a good look at his own appearance. It hadn’t occurred to him before that maybe Iwamoto hadn’t been the only one who’d changed after what had happened to him. To them.

At first glance, there wasn’t anything different about him. When you looked closer though, when you looked at him with eyes that weren’t fooled by the concept of ‘normality’, a change became visible. The intricate and carefully weaved spell felt like something that was all around him and inside him at the same time to Sakuma. It was part of him and yet it was something that did not belong to him. It was a complicated and complex feeling. He couldn’t really put it into words very well.

“If you keep that up, your head will explode from overuse or something. You know you only have limited brain capacity.” A deep voice commented from somewhere behind him and only a second later, a second reflection appeared behind his own in the pond.

The teasing undertone of the voice changed and turned genuinely guilty and concerned then. “Does it...is it uncomfortable or something?” His fingers brushed over the collarbone that peeked out from underneath Sakuma’s shirt.

“Don’t apologize. If that’s what you were going to say next.” Sakuma turned around and caught Iwamoto’s hand with his own. Then he smiled. “And you know I wouldn’t think about something as complicated as that.” He got up onto his tiptoes and kissed Iwamoto hello. “Shall we go?” He moved but then noticed the other wasn’t. “Hikaru?”

Iwamoto looked at him. “Are you sure? After all that happened.”

“I know nobody will blame me if I pulled back now but I’m not.” His smile was genuine, his words honest. Sakuma meant it. Of course he was afraid, afraid of what could happen but if he withdrew now, if he ran away from things, it wouldn’t really help. It wouldn’t change anything. So why not continue life as it had been before? Normally.

“It’s weird when you sound so...smart.” Iwamoto shoved at Sakuma gently. “Alright then. Let’s go and make the most of tonight.”

As time passed, both of them got more comfortable. Or maybe they just got more used to what was happened, what had happened to them. The fear and anxiety weren’t completely gone of course but it was now a healthy sense of unease - or rather caution. Something that kept you alert and on track at all times.

They could even joke about things now. “The demon in him comes out sometimes alright.” Sakuma old Tatsumi. “Especially when we’re in bed.”

“I know you meant it in the ‘hot’ way but to me it’s kind of the ‘too much information’ way, you know?” The other male laughed. “I can totally see where you’re coming from, though. It’s like when I talk about Kosshi, isn’t it?”

“Exactly.” Sakuma chirped. Then he noticed how his form was turning transparent. “Ah, I guess it’s time for me to get up as well. Hikaru had to get up early today so he went ahead. It must be close to noon now. I got to sleep in.”

“Sounds nice. I’ll see you around?” Tatsumi waved.

“We were planning to visit Yuma and the others tonight but if you’re around, I’m sure we’ll see each other. I’ll tell Hikaru you said ‘hi’?” Sakuma offered.

Tatsumi nodded. “Please.”

Once Sakuma opened his eyes, back in the world of the awake, he stretched and went to go through his ‘morning’ routine. When he checked his reflection in the bathroom mirror, he noticed the darkening spots on his neck and shoulder. Myuto had commented on how Iwamoto seemed to ‘mangle’ Sakuma’s neck every time they got some quality time together. It might seem like that to others - and look like it, too - but it was also pretty damn hot. Sakuma’s weak spots were his neck, shoulder and collarbone area.

Iwamoto’s weak spots were his ears - piercings - and then a spot by his navel and one on his lower back. Oh and the one between the other’s shoulder blades that Sakuma liked to snuggle against whenever the two of them were horizontal and the other was facing him with his back, or whenever he ‘ambushed’ Iwamoto while the other was sitting.

That’s exactly how things went later on. Sakuma spotted Iwamoto sitting on a chair at the fast food restaurant where they had arranged to meet. He approached the other from behind and leaned his head on Iwamoto’s shoulder to see what the other was looking at.

“Oh, you’re on volume 12 already? It’s addicting, isn’t it?” He grinned when he saw the manga the other was reading. It was his, Iwamoto had borrowed a couple of volumes the last time the other had been over at Sakuma’s place. A few DVDs as well, Iwamoto liked to watch those while doing his crunches or other workout.

“Hn.” Iwamoto grunted in reply. “Couple more pages. Lemme read.”

“Okay. I’ll get something to eat. You want anything else?” He asked and then smiled when the other handed him his cup for a refill.

There was nothing abnormal about them that any onlooker could tell. And yet they weren’t at the fast food joint to read manga, have food and drinks and chat. Of course they were genuinely enjoying themselves but at the same time, they were looking for something, waiting for someone to show up.

“It’s almost time, isn’t it?” Sakuma checked his phone.

Iwamoto looked at one of the doors. “Yeah. It was around this time yesterday and the day before. And the day before that as well. No mistake.”

Sakuma’s eyes were on the other door and suddenly his eyes narrowed. “I think it’s here.”

Not turning around too obviously, Iwamoto took a look and nodded. “It is. Bingo.”

A couple of what looked like high school girls had come into the restaurant. Some of them were chatting and laughing but there was one, who stood out. She was trying to be as cheerful as the others around her but Sakuma and Iwamoto could see right through her facade. And her thick make-up that hid her sickly pale skin.

There was the scent of death lingering around her. The foul smell of a nightmare demon.

“This should be easy today.” Sakuma smiled. “I’m sure they’ll fall for you the moment they see you~” He grinned at Iwamoto.

“Why am I doing all the hard work, huh?” Iwamoto raised an eyebrow. “Who says you aren’t their type? I could just intimidate the hell out of them.”

“As if. Girls like that kind of thing. And you know I suck at this talking and charming thing.” Sakuma batted his eyelashes at the other. “You’ll do well, Hikaru. I’ll cheer you on.” Then he added in a quieter voice, “And I’ll do the hard work later.”

Sighing, Iwamoto pushed himself up. “Alright, alright. I’ll be right back then.”

“Bye~” Sakuma mock-waved. While Iwamoto was chatting up the girls in the queue, Sakuma sent a message on his phone. He was just looking up again when the other returned. “That was quick?” He mused.

“Didn’t have to do anything. She had her commuter’s pass hanging out of her bag. Her name was on it.” Iwamoto shrugged. “Let’s get out of here?”

“Alright.” Sakuma got up. “I’m coming over tonight, right?”

“Are you now?” Iwamoto raised an eyebrow but the twinkle in his eyes betrayed his words.

“Yup. Told my family I’m not coming home tonight already.” Sakuma grinned.

Snorting softly, Iwamoto grabbed his bag. “Alright then, so I guess I’m taking you home now.”

Sakuma’s grin melted into a smile, a suggestive one. “I’ll do some work now, before we go to bed? It’s important to make sure we fall asleep quickly tonight after all. So leave that to me. I do my job very well in that area.”

“Do you now? Let’s have you prove that.” Iwamoto walked over to the door and pushed it open. He waited until Sakuma had walked through and followed the other. “I won’t believe it until I see it.”

“See you will.” Sakuma nodded. “And feel. And a couple of other things.”

“Looking forward to it.” Iwamoto smirked. “I have high expectations. You better make sure that by the end of the night I am absolutely flabbergasted.”
