Empty was the look in her eyes, blank expression haunting his dreams.
Petrify was the most terrifying spell he had come across so far in his journey to becoming a fully qualified mage, and if you asked him, he couldn't tell you why he had thought to cast it before he was ready, before he had learnt the counter curse.
Maybe it was the idea of power, that he was amazing for knowing such a curse because he had come across it in a more advanced textbook than his level and he had felt himself capable to master the spell. Maybe it was the thought of experimentation, that he had found this thing he had never tried before and he wanted to test it out because he could, because he had the power to.
And test it out he did, in his first private tutoring session he had managed to score with the pretty upper-class man. Without so much as a warning, he cast the spell, forgetting its purpose, and he watched in one part excitement, one part curiosity as its effect took hold.
And then the horror set in as he belatedly remembered what spell it was he had just cast while the pretty girl he had hoped to impress simply stood there, staring blankly at him.
He panicked, and then he screamed.
