[Team Two] Slice of Life
Random thing that popped up in my head... ^^;
A lingering touch meant to comfort here, a glance to confirm his thoughts there. Fuuta and Kaito didn’t need many words to communicate with one another most of the time. That’s how it had always been between them. Well, almost.
The two of them had known each other since before entering Kikunaga High School. It had been a chance meeting. Fuuta’s mother - his father had left her before his birth - had been having trouble with her car from work. An acquaintance had referred her to the ‘Mashima Garage’ run by Kaito’s father. She had taken Fuuta along back then - he’d still been in elementary school - and he had hidden behind his mother while she had talked to the mechanic.
After a moment, the man asked whether Fuuta wanted someone to play with since he had two sons, one being around his age probably, since fixing the car would take some time and just watching would probably be boring for him.
That’s how he’d met Kaito and Kenji for the first time. They’d become fast friends.
And they had stayed friends, despite the awkward attempt of both of their single parents, at dating each other. Kaito’s father had lost his wife to sickness a few years after Kaito’s birth and had been raising his sons by himself ever since. So their situations at home were kind of similar - another reason why they got along well, probably. Things hadn’t quite worked out though but their parents had separated again as friends.
They both grew up admiring Kaito’s older brother Kenji. The other was their role-model for almost everything. Two years their senior, Kenji went through a lot of things at school before they did. Of course the schools they went to weren’t top class - their families couldn’t afford that. So fighting quickly became the way of life there. During elementary school they were just brawls. Nothing was serious there and that’s how the teachers treated it as well.
Middle School got a lot stricter about fighting but at this point, the teachers were unable or unwilling to stop things really. Kenji had made himself the leader of the middle school by the time Kaito and Fuuta entered. So there wasn’t much for them to worry about.
It was when Kenji left that life got interesting for them for the first time and when Kaito showed just how closely he was related to his brother.
Things changed once more when they entered Kikunaga together. Kikukou was infamous for their rogue, ‘yankee’ students. Unlike at middle school, where a handful of students were the ‘bad crop’, here at Kikukou all the students from several middle schools came together and formed a whole student body consisting of those who only knew two rules: survival of the fittest and the strongest one will be the unquestioned leader.
Kenji being at the same school didn’t help them here. Things worked by year, although ultimately, the seniors were of course the ones who had the last word.
The first few days at school had been chaos. Everyone had been pitched against each other.
It was the first time that Kaito and Fuuta fought each other seriously. The first and the last. Of course they had had arguments in the past but they had never faced each other in a fight. After fighting alongside each other they both knew for the other’s strength and weaknesses and had developed complementary fighting styles.
Being friends didn’t mean that they went easy on each other, quite the contrary. They fought in earnest, surrounded by a jeering and cheering crowd at first and then in tense silence. Kaito had emerged victorious in the end but not after a long struggle.
A long struggle was also how Fuuta would describe what was happening in front of him right now as he dutifully counted the plates on their side of the table.
One of the Cattleya girls had apparently gotten some “Free All-You-Can-Eat” vouchers from a family business partner. Since she hadn’t been interested in them she had handed them over to the guys in her class - who must have worshipped her a lot afterwards. The Bakada group had then bumped into Fuuta, Kaito and their group on the way and an impromptu challenge had ensued between their schools at the restaurant. Kaito had been burning for revenge apparently.
Tetsuya looked at him, a mixture of understanding and challenge in his eyes. “I know how you’re feeling but I don’t think we’re going to lose this one either.”
Snorting softly, Fuuta added one of his own plates to the growing piles. “Don’t be so sure of that. Kikukou has a secret weapon.”
Daiki made a face and leaned back on his chair. “I’m going to throw up if you make me eat any more than this!” He declared loudly.
“Not him, obviously.” Fuuta added.
They were kicked out of the restaurant when their time-limit was reached at around the same plate-count. The Bakada side was complaining about that outcome loudly - Shun and Daiki joining in on their side occasionally, with a remark or two from Riku mixed in. And a quiet rustling sound here and there that made the corner of Kaito’s mouth twitch slightly.
The rustling sound could be heard again while Tatsuya was having a tirade. “God damnit what is that sound? Whoever’s making it, can you stop it?”
Noriyuki closed the 100yen store bag he had been carrying, half a melon-pan in his hand. Fuuta was munching on the other half at present. Both suddenly felt all eyes on them.
“Are you serious?”
“Maji ka?”
Yuki and Makoto voiced what the others must have been thinking. Or well, at least Makoto did since Fuuta doubted most of the rest were able to understand, much less think, in English.
Kaito smirked. “Noriyuki says he isn’t full yet. Fuuta said he wanted dessert.”
Shrugging, Fuuta took another bite from the melon-pan. “The ice-cream and pancakes weren’t enough, so we grabbed cream puffs, eclairs and melon-pan from the 100yen place. Nori accidentally bought 3 of these, so we’re sharing the last one.”
“He says he wants to go back to savory again next.” Daiki added helpfully. “Like okonomiyaki.”
Maya clamped a hand over his mouth. “I think I’m going to be sick.”
The rest from Bakada seemed to look a little green suddenly as well.
“Oh my god. Unbelievable!” Yuki moaned.
“I can’t believe this. They’re not normal.” Makoto nodded.
Fuuta smirked as he looked at Tetsuya, licking his fingers after finishing his share of the sweet treat. “Told you.”
Kaito gloated. “I consider this a victory for Kikukou. If you have objections, there’s a Family Restaurant right down that road.”
Of course they decided to call it a day and their groups went separate ways. More and more of the Kikukou guys also broke off as they went along, leaving only Kaito and Fuuta in the end. As usual. They lived in the same direction, Kaito living a bit further out than Fuuta.
“I could do with something to work this off again right now.” Kaito muttered, rubbing his stomach ever so slightly. “Worth it, though.” He added with a grin.
Fuuta smiled. He was about to say something when a couple of shadows blocked their way.
The smile disappeared on his face immediately, replaced by his usual slightly aloof and bored expression. Despite the lack of proper uniforms on the guys, he recognized them to be from a school they had challenged and defeated before.
“The fuck do you want?” Fuuta looked at them
“Heard you guys lost against Bakada. Not so hot stuff are you now?” One of them taunted.
That of course hit a nerve with Kaito especially and the taller male cracked his knuckles. “What did you just say, asshole?”
Kenji clicked his tongue disapprovingly when he saw the two of them when they arrived at Kaito’s place a few minutes later. “Go and wash up, you two.” He jerked his thumb up and then turned back to the car he’d been working on. The other never judged them, he knew how things were. He’d been the same after all.
Fuuta wiped some of the blood off Kaito’s face in the bathroom, the only trace of a fight on the other’s face. “Was that enough of a workout for you?” He laughed softly.
“Could’ve shut some more of their mouths, if you ask me.” Kaito muttered and then looked at Fuuta. “One of them got you?” His eyes narrowed when he saw Fuuta’s split lip and the small trail of blood running down from it.
“Let him believe he did.” Fuuta shrugged.
“You play around too much.” Kaito commented disapprovingly.
Fuuta licked at his own blood. “Making them believe they have a chance is more fun. The expression on their faces when they go down. That look of disbelieve.”
“You’re crazy.” Kaito snorted and then. “You’ve always been.”
“It never bothered yo-” Fuuta didn’t manage to finish his sentence because Kaito silenced him effectively. And Fuuta let him.
It was something they had started to experiment with only recently. Thanks to a stash of magazines they had found in Kenji’s room one afternoon after recovering from the fight with the Bakada group. Things had been rather awkward at first but they were getting the hang of it slowly. At least Fuuta thought that they were because it felt good.
