[Team SONIC] hearth and home
Starting word from here.
This summer is going to be so good, Jongdae thought as he stared at the filled-in calendar with satisfaction.
Everything on the large, pinned-up calendar had been penned on in Liyin's tidy handwriting, first colour coded by pen ink for each member of their small family — pink for Jongdae, brown for Liyin, and blue for their little princess — and then highlighted depending on which one of the adults was responsible for transportation. Their scheduled week away from home had the added distinction of its squares coloured in, the soft lilac shade standing out against the otherwise plain white calendar.
He recalled smiling as he had watched his five year old daughter eagerly pick up the colouring pencil to block out the week.
He was jolted out his thoughts when a tiny someone crashed into his legs and threw their arms around one of his thighs to hug it tightly to themselves.
"Daddy," his little girl screamed in delight, hopping on the spot even as she clung to him. "Daddy, daddy, daddy!"
With a grin, he bent down and scooped her up, holding her close and pressing their foreheads together.
"Hello there, my precious little one," he whispered as he looked into her eyes. "How was your day at day care? Did you have fun today?"
She made a loud, happy sound and pulled her face away from her father. Then, she started patting his cheeks, giggling when he puffed them up and squealing when he puffed air over her face when she patted them.
"Sweetie," came Liyin's gentle voice from the entrance way of the apartment, "nai-nai is resting at the moment so you'll need to be a little bit more quiet."
Their daughter stopped playing with Jongdae's cheeks when she heard her mother's words and nodded a few times. Jongdae almost couldn't hold back a burst of laughter at the slightly comical sight of her pigtails bobbing wildly juxtaposing against her suddenly serious face. He just about managed to, though, which was just as well because in the next moment, she was squirming to be let down.
Gently, he set her down, and instantly she turned towards the guest bedroom down the hall. She took a step, a second step, and then paused just as she was about to take a third, placing her food firmly down on the wooden floorboard. She turned her heads towards Liyin with a slightly guilty expression, the same look she always wore when she wasn't sure if she was doing the right thing.
"I need to ask permission first, right?" she asked, just to make sure. It had been one of the things that he and Liyin had been trying to ingrain in her: to ask for the okay before running off to do something. Having free reign of the house was simultaneously one of the perks and one of the pitfalls of being only child.
"Yes," Liyin answered with an encouraging smile. She walked over to their daughter and kneeled down so their faces were level. "What do you want to ask?"
"Can I go and wake nai-nai up?" the little girl asked. "So she knows I'm home…"
Liyin shook her head sadly. "Nai-nai had a long plane journey this morning so she's very tired. How about this: let's eat something and watch a cartoon. If nai-nai hasn't woken up by then, you can go and wake her up."
The frown that had settled on their daughter's face instantly turned upside down and she asked, "Can I have some cake?" When Liyin nodded, she excitedly scampered towards the dining table. She clambered into her seat and sat there, watching Liyin expectantly.
"They grow up so fast," Liyin sighed as she pushed herself up.
They do indeed, Jongdae thought fondly as he joined his family in the kitchen to prepare their afternoon snack.
