[ Team Five ] History (From the Annals of SM's Secret Files)

um....so this is the first part of an alternate canon fic I might finish at some point, in which Kyuline debuts together in 2011 instead of Exo, plus Joonmyun as their magnae.  Ft. Zhou Mi as the loveable manager.

Zhou Mi just stares at Joonmyun across the kitchen. “I can't believe you’re debuting! Already! You’re actually finally debuting!”

“You can’t put ‘already’ and ‘finally’ in the same sentence, hyung,” Kyuhyun smirks as he drops a length of apple peel from the tip of his knife. “I’m pretty sure that’s ungrammatical, right Min?”

Both Changmin and Minho glance over at Kyuhyun, but Minho doesn’t say anything. “It is,” Changmin says after letting out a weary sigh, “except he didn’t say them in the same sentence.”

“Hah!” Zhou Min juts his chin out in Kyuhyun’s direction but his grin is friendly instead of challenging. “See, I can speak just fine now. If I was you, I’d be worrying about brushing up on my Mandarin, seeing as none of you are Chinese native speakers.”

“I don’t think we have to worry about that for awhile, right? I mean debuting in another language?” Jonghyun slides his palms down the legs of his jeans until his fingertips bridge his kneecaps. He looks about as comfortable perched on the kitchen counter of Super Junior M’s vacant dorm as Joonmyun feels squashed into a folding chair between Changmin and Ryeowook.

“He hasn’t been signed with SM for long, but he’s sharp,” Changmin comments aloud, even though Jonghyun is sitting right there where he can here. “And no, don’t worry about it. There’ll be no time for worrying whenever they decide a special project for us anyway. Maybe it’ll be in Japanese…”

“Don’t forget, I’m your manager.” Zhou Mi thumps himself on the chest and grins, as if he’s trying to give his own self a pat on the back. Maybe he is, Joonmyun thinks. He looks proud and excited as if the new debut plans had all been his idea from the start. “And speaking of which, let’s get back to the main point of this impromptu meeting. Joonmyun, do you have anything you want to say to your hyungs?”

“Uh, well--” Joonmyun trips on Ryeowook’s shoelace as he tries to get out of his seat, and nearly lands in Changmin’s lap. Changmin catches him by the shoulder with his strong hands and the backs of Joonmyun’s thighs only graze his hyung’s knees, but he’s too flushed and shaky to stutter out an apology.

“Actually, we should probably try to remember that Myun is actually older than me,” Minho raises his glass of iced tea to point out. “He’s technically not the magnae here.”

“Sorry, forgive my...inaccurate terminology. I just meant that everyone here is already worked in the business for awhile, and since Joonmyun is the last member to be confirmed for the new project…” Zhou Mi shrugs, not a flippant gesture, but an apologetic one. “Do you care to introduce yourself to your industry sunbaes?”

“Sure.” Joonmyun nods a few times to make sure he’s caught his breath again, and opens his mouth under the secure warmth of Zhou Mi’s encouraging gaze. “I’ve enjoyed hanging out with all of you sunbae-nim over the years, but I’m well aware that closeness in age or relationship doesn’t erase the fact that I have a lot to catch up with in terms of work experience so...please take care of me, and please rest assured I’ll be working hard and doing my best for this debut!”

“Hear, hear!” Ryeowook crows, clapping Joonmyun on the shoulder as he sits back down.

“Working hard is exactly what all of us will be doing,” Zhou Mi nods. “Thank you, Joonmyun. And now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get down to reviewing schedules for the next week. Ryeowook, I’ll need you to keep track of everything in your planner as well, and let me know if anything changes when I’m not around.”

“Yes sir!” Ryeowook pretends to salute, drawing a soft laugh from Minho. Joonmyun laughs too, and wishes he was sitting next to his best friend instead of between two hyungs--he wonders if he can call them that now, ‘hyung’ instead of ‘sunbae’. He’s never directly addressed Changmin before ever, even at Kyuhyun’s parties he’s no stranger to, and the ex-TVXQ magnae rarely speaks to him anyway.

They’ll probably be getting a lot more comfortable with each other now that they’re sharing a dorm, Joonmyun figures. At least he hopes it gets more comfortable with time. So far it’s just felt awkward, though they’ve only been inhabiting the former sub-unit of Super Junior’s dorm for 24 hours. Only time will tell.

“Now we’ve already decided that Ryeowook will be the leader, based on seniority, though Changmin will back us up in case anything happens. But nothing’s going to, alright guys?” Zhou Mi pauses to shoot a serious glance around the circle. “We’ve all left our groups due to various mishaps and strokes of bad luck--save you of course, Joonmyunnie--but we’re not going to let anything get in the way of the great unit we have right here, in this room! We’re gonna make history!”

“Fuck yes,” Jonghyun mutters, fist pumping an apple that Ryeowook’s been eyeing on the counter since breakfast.

“Now Ryeowook and Jonghyun, you guys are the warm and cheerful personalities. You two are in charge of skinship on stage at performances, at least for now. Don’t get too blatant with fanservice too soon, since you guys have more of a broship image if you know what I mean, but maybe we can mix it up later.”

“Bro...ship?” Joonmyun asks in confusion, after unsuccessfully trying to catch Minho’s eye to mouth his question to his friend.

“Like...the public knows you all are friends, bros,” Zhou Mi explains as he flips through his notes. “Which is why this line up is going to work so nicely for us! Next we have Changminnie here. You are supposed to function as a sort of silent guardian, strong and capable in the background until you’re actually shining on stage, at which point feel free to get as sexy as you feel like. You’re not the one initiating the fan service, so it’s okay to flaunt it.

“Next,” Zhou Mi sighs, looking straight at Joonmyun as he closes his notepad with a snap of pages falling back into place. “Next we have our magnaes. Now Min, you’re just starting to grow into your ‘mature’ stage: manly charm, pleated slacks, strong vocals but equally as practiced rapping, the whole works. It won’t happen right away, but expect to act in a couple more romcoms under Siwon’s direction in the first couple years of our contract.

“And that leaves you, Joonmyun.” Zhou Mi taps his pencil against the patch of stubble growing on the knob of his chin as all the members yet again swivel their heads to stare at Joonmyun. “As Minho pointed out earlier, you’re not technically the youngest. But since you’re so, ahem, forgive me if I say ‘cute’, as well as the least experienced one here in terms of TV promotions and interviews, that kind of stuff, upper management has decided to give you the role of the traditional magnae.”

“Ah...which means what, exactly?” Joonmyun glances to Minho’s gentle smile before looking back up at Zhou Mi.

“Just be yourself!” Ryeowook reaches up to pat Joonmyun’s head, careful not to sift his fingers through the newly bleached and still brittle blonde strands. “Smile, throw in shy glances at noonas every once in awhile. You’ll get the hang of it once we go on TV for our first interview!”

“I won’t get any chances to practice before our first filming?” Joonmyun asks in alarm. He blushes even harder at the sound of Changmin’s soft snort beside him.

“You’ve been practicing for seven years, magnae. You got this.”

“Thank you…” Joonmyun nods, and tries to smile.

“Thank you hyung,” Zhou Mi corrects with a pointed look.

“Thanks, hyung,” Joonmyun says again with a sigh. “I’ll do my best.”

“Great! That’s all I can ask of each of you, but I know we’ll do fine. This has been in the works ever since 2009’s erm, season of difficulties, and trust me when I say that SME isn’t going to mess up this time. This time we’re gonna--”

“Make history!” Ryeowook interrupts with a cheer. “Which means we better catch some shut eye, since we have to be up 5:00 tomorrow. Come on, sleepy heads.”

Ryeowook shoos everyone but Changmin and the manager out of the kitchen, directing their chorus of groans as if they were the strains of an angel choir.

“You okay?” Minho squeezes his hands over Joonmyun’s shoulders, massaging into the knots of his upper back to hold him out of the way as Jonghyun passes.

“Yeah, just...nervous.” Joonmyun gulps down the stale lump in his throat and inhales enough oxygen to make sure his lips won’t tremble when he tries to smile.

“Yeah, me too.”

“You’re nervous? Even though you’ve been out on stage and on recording sets hundreds and hundreds of times?” Joonmyun side eyes Minho as his friend steers him towards the bathroom in the hall, but Minho’s awkward shrug means he’s telling the truth, not just false words of empty comfort.

“Yup. It’s amazing once I’m on stage, but beforehand--just thinking about it--!” Minho’s full body shiver ripples through Joonmyun as well, the wave of nervous energy entering at his shoulders where Minho’s palms are still glued to his T-shirt and echoing down to the base of his spine. “Come on, hurry up and brush your teeth so I can turn out the lights.”

“Okay. You’ll still be awake when I come back?” Joonmyun jerks his head in the direction of the darkened bedroom which he will be sharing with Minho from now on, as long and as far as this adventure will take them.

“Yup! Just don’t take five years, you slowpoke.”

Joonmyun yelps when Minho’s fingers jab at the ticklish spot in his side, but the bedroom door slams shut before he can retaliate. “Dumb Min,” he says as he shakes his head at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror, but he can’t keep the toothpaste from dribbling down his chin as he starts to brush. His grin is too big to keep everything inside, and the relief and joy are leaking out from his chest as well. He literally cannot wait to set foot on their first debut stage together.
