Without further ado, let’s get this show on the road! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ☆✧.*
Get a dog, they said. It'll be great, they said. Dogs are wonderful, they said. You can handle it, they said.
'They' had never met a dog like Namjoon.
There's something to be said for reading up ahead of time and being smart before doing something like buying a dog. Of course, when Taehyung had told him about the breed, and then identified it as the 'DOGE' meme that Jeongguk had been entirely immersed in for a few months, he'd been biased. Researching online and reading that 'this dog is like a cat' had been promising, especially in the way that Jeongguk likes cats too.
Animals are okay, and getting a dog like Taehyung's who is more energy and drool than Jeongguk is a little more than he's prepared for. A dog he can run with, exercise, play around with, but doesn't have to be constantly taking care of works.
According to the websites and the packets Jeongguk had been reading, this was the breed for him. Plus, it was really cute too.
So, Jeongguk got a shiba inu.
Jeongguk got Namjoon, a tan shiba inu who looked adorable, was energetic and fun, and mostly poised but licked Jeongguk's hands when he went to pet him. In short, it was all fine at the shelter, and Jeongguk in his 'I just graduated college I can take on the world' attitude, had signed the adoption papers.
Quickly, Jeongguk learned that Namjoon wasn't just a shiba inu. Namjoon was another force of nature entirely.
There is a lot to be said about reading up ahead of time, and Jeongguk knew that shiba inus were smart, didn't always like to be cuddled, could be sassy, and, if bored, might destroy things. Jeongguk thought he was prepared, and the dog was kind of like a challenge.
Jeongguk is great with challenges, it's what got him such a high GPA and made him deadly in literally every sport he went for. Jeongguk is good with challenges.
Namjoon isn't a challenge. Namjoon is a dog of destruction and chaos and Jeongguk wakes up every morning wondering what else Namjoon has gotten into.
Yesterday it was Jeongguk's laptop, which he put in a drawer, in his closet dresser, and closed all the doors. Doors mean nothing to Namjoon.
The problem is that Namjoon isn't just a dog of destruction, he's adorable and Jeongguk, as much as he has no idea what to do with his shiba, is so pathetically in love with the stupid pup he can't bring himself to get Namjoon trained.
There is also the fact that Jeongguk is a bit convinced that Namjoon only acts out for him seeing as he's perfectly well behaved around Taehyung.
"He just knows I'm alpha," Taehyung tells him, lying on the floor near Namjoon as Namjoon's head is cocked to the side. Jeongguk knows that look. It's the look that means Namjoon is feeling really damn superior, but also having the time of his life, so he's playing along. It's the look he gets when he's chewed through his leash again and Jeongguk has had to chase him for miles because Namjoon thinks this is all a big funny exciting game.
"I'm pretty sure Namjoon knows he's alpha," Jeongguk sighs, looking at his dog as Namjoon gets up and goes to nudge Taehyung's fingers for attention. Which he gets, immediately.
But even if Namjoon does think he's alpha, there's an element where he does what Taehyung wants. He sits and stays and does things that would usually have Jeongguk giving up after the fifth try.
"I feel like he's training you more than you're training him, like a cat, except he's a dog, and you suck with cats," Taehyung says 'helpfully' before he leaves.
Jeongguk doesn't think so.
Instead, what Jeongguk thinks is more worrisome. The thing is, Jeongguk is not stupid, and he knows Namjoon is smart, really smart, like how can this dog be so damn smart he opened a door but he runs into walls smart, that sort of genius type animal. The thing is, Jeongguk knows Namjoon is smart, and Namjoon knows he's smart.
Namjoon also probably thinks he's smarter than Jeongguk, which leads to most of his behavior where Namjoon most of the time treats him like he's the pet and Namjoon is just humoring him. And Namjoon is lazy despite how much energy he takes from Jeongguk on a constant basis.
So finally, it ends up where Jeongguk is out with his dog, staring at Namjoon as Namjoon decided mid stride that lying down would be a much better use of their afternoon outside time, and Jeongguk is stuck on the sidewalk with a dog that's more superior than a cat but still very much a petulant stupid dog. Life, at that point, appears a very harsh life, and Jeongguk wonders what choices he's made to have such a ridiculous dog.
"Stuck?" asks a voice that has Jeongguk looking up.
A man with chestnut hair and wearing white button down shirt and a small black barista apron is looking at him. "It's just- my dog-"
Suddenly, Namjoon is rolling over and getting up, approaching the strange barista man hesitantly but interestedly. The man bends down, and Jeongguk opens his mouth to tell him Namjoon bites when he falters, watching as the man carefully pets Namjoon on the head and Namjoon lets him. Holy shit, dog whisperer.
"What's his name?" the man asks, looking up as he's crouched on the sidewalk petting Jeongguk's dog casually as Namjoon sits there and lets himself be pet.
"Namjoon," Jeongguk answers, not sure who he should stare at; his dog or the barista.
"What's your name?"
"I'm Jeongguk," Jeongguk says, watching as the man smiles and scratches Namjoon behind the ears. Namjoon has that delighted doggy expression on his face like 'fuck yeah, I'm so worth this.' The man has a nice look about him, the kind of smile that is perfect for taking care of small children and bringing home to introduce to his parents. What?
"I'm Seokjin," the man says, a smile breaking out over his face. "Would you like to come inside and get a coffee?"
"You allow dogs?"
"Well, I allow dogs, so we'll figure something out," Seokjin says, still smiling.
The cafe is a new one, where Jeongguk has been on this street to walk Namjoon many times and most of the time the building has been under construction. It's finally open today, and Jeongguk smiles at the barista behind the counter, a smaller man with blond hair and another barista who is wiping down a few tables. There are only a few customers.
Seokjin doesn't actually make him coffee, instead chats with him a bit as one of the other baristas makes food. "I actually do the cooking here," Seokjin says. "I'm just here helping out a bit while they get the menu set up and Yoongi gets on his feet."
"Yoongi?"
Seokjin turns to point at the smaller blond man talking with the black haired barista about something by one of the espresso machines. "The blond one is Yoongi, my husband."
So someone already took him home to introduce to their parents. "Oh," says Jeongguk. Suddenly it makes a bit more sense as to why Jeongguk can bring in Namjoon even if the cafe might not allow them.
"He owns the place actually," Seokjin is saying. "You should come by more often."
Jeongguk ends up with a cafe mocha, made by Seokjin's husband Yoongi, and delivered by the black haired barista. It takes a moment for Jeongguk to stare at him as the barista lingers, his eyes on Seokjin and flickering to Jeongguk before he says something.
"Do you need anything?"
Seokjin laughs, and sits back, apparently realizing the barista might not usually stay after delivering a coffee. "This is Jimin, he's-"
"Can I pet your dog?" Jimin asks, his eyes shining in eagerness as he looks at Namjoon who is pointedly sleeping and keeping watch over everything.
"Um," Jeongguk says, looking up at Jimin and not sure if he should warn that Namjoon bites when he feels like it. "Sure, just-"
Jimin is on Namjoon like fire on gasoline, practically falling to the floor as he reaches out with a coo to pet let Namjoon sniff his hand before licking it. Jeongguk has never seen such affectionate cooing petting in his entire life.
It's cute but also nauseating.
"Jimin really likes animals," Seokjin explains calmly, smiling over the table at Jeongguk.
"I love dogs," Jimin says, looking up with an enormous smile on his face. "I've always loved dogs."
"Jimin, this is Jeongguk, my new friend," Seokjin says, easily navigating the introductions.
"Hi," says Jeongguk, and can't help but find it a little amusing how Namjoon seems to be judging Jimin while also wallowing in the affections.
"It's nice to meet you, Jeongguk!" Jimin says before going back to loving Namjoon.
Jeongguk can't stay, but he ends up meeting everyone in the cafe, finally reaching the breaking point when he notices Namjoon getting bored. Worn out from all the attention and bored is not a good combination on Namjoon, as he then gets restless and tends to go a bit wild before he just bites everyone or lies down and never moves.
"Come back any time!" Seokjin calls.
"Bring your dog!" Jimin calls after him, sticking his head out of the cafe.
"I'm glad you like my dog more than me," Jeongguk says as Namjoon decides to walk around him in circles and basically wrap him up in the leash. He's fucked.
"Yeah, well, next time I'll talk to you," Jimin says as Seokjin laughs and ushers him back inside the cafe.
True to prediction, Namjoon, now devoid of all people except Jeongguk, gets a burst of energy and decides to play hide and seek, dragging Jeongguk all the way home before lying down and deciding he prefers napping a block away from Jeongguk's house.
"I hope you had fun today," Jeongguk says, staring down at his dog. Namjoon looks up at him with that sort of look that says 'what do you think, genius? you have eyes.' Jeongguk sighs, running his hand through his hair. "Yeah, okay, me too." Namjoon 'woofs' at the ground.
I might end up continuing this (probably) just for fun and giggles who knows~ The line from Jimin (“I like dogs, I’ve always liked dogs”) is from Jupiter Rising and totally not mine but still hilarious.
You're up
