[team two] stay with me, way past forever

Hello hello and it's nice to be back! Here's the beginning for my war!AU I've been writing. No-one luckily dies yet.

”That's more than enough!”

”Hahaha!”

”Do it again!”

The happy talking fills Jongdae's ears as he steps inside. It's been a dark gloomy evening in the depth of winter and Jongdae has been one of those few ones braving the bitter coldness by even stepping outside but he had been told by the American general to change the base so that he could join his new unit that night.

In a very twisted way war and army life suits Jongdae. It's tiring but at the same simple as ever do to the pushups whenever being told to do so, change the base, feel the heaviness and coldness of the gun against his shoulder, trying to stay alive, protecting his country not to turn into doom, waiting to die, waiting to live. When the only thing he really needs to concentrate on is staying alive he can forget everything else, forget the horrible and the dwelling dread inside him.

The hardest thing is to make new friends. Last week Jongdae had happily gone to have a beer with two soldiers from his old unit, hoping he would finally tie some kind of friendships but two days after that they both had got killed.

The bunch of young men keep talking with each other by the table. ”Oh, the new guy!” someone exclaims as he spots Jongdae.

”Welcome!” someone else shouts.

”Time to die!” More laughing.

One of them hails Jongdae to join them and not just stand by the door chink. Jongdae sits down between two guys, the other seems to lead the conversation with a loud voice while the other one doesn't stay any quieter, roughly pushing at others' shoulders with one arm as he laughs at attempted bad jokes.

”You want some?”

Jongdae looks up and sees the guy with single eyelids and a friendly smile opposite of him holding a bottle of alcohol with one hand. Jongdae accepts the offer by nodding.

Despite the bitterness the taste of soju feels refreshing and Jongdae drinks it thirstily, and the loud guy next to him pours him more. Jongdae takes a quick chance to glance around the table and he simply can't see these young laughing men as killers, these young men are not soldiers who are supposed to hold the cold guns and systematically kill their brothers by the command.

In the end Jongdae ends up telling a lot about himself and learns to know the others quickly during that night.

The loud guy next to him is called Baekhyun. He keeps telling he's not afraid of dying but he tells Jongdae the worst thing in war are the sounds and Jongdae doesn't quite get it. Despite being the one in control of speaking the most he's actually also a new member of the unit who has arrived earlier that day.

The other guy next to him is Chanyeol who takes a chance to tap a rhythm against the table in any situation and talks a lot about his dream to open and run a bar where the music and the alcohol flow through everyone's veins and nothing under the moon could bother the customers after the war would be over. Chanyeol laughs at all jokes and seems to be a total mood maker who walks into a room and everyone brightens up. The big smile on his face never seems to fade off and he actually tells Jongdae he's never unhappy.

Junmyeon is the company commander and then there's the lieutenant commander called Minseok who's that friendly-looking man with single eyelids. The two of them seem like people Jongdae trusts right away even just by looking at them. The firm experience glows in Junmyeon's presence and Minseok doesn't seem that talkative but seems like a good listener, and those kind of people are truly needed.

Kyungsoo is maybe the most quiet one, not saying many things aloud and Jongdae can't tell if the war has already got its tolls on that man or if staying silent is his personal way to survive. Jongdae has learnt that everyone has their own ways to survive, to deal with that constant death around them, and therefore sees no use by making comments about Kyungsoo and his character to anyone.

Yixing has lived all his life in Korea and knows his side in battle, making serious notes about all of them being one unit who has to stay together. Jongdae decides to like the guy right away.

Jongdae mentally shakes his head as he watches the guy called Zitao. War is just too much for that young man, he gets startled by the smallest sounds coming from outside, scared eyes widing in fear, and sometimes grabs the wrist of Junmyeon who's sitting next to him. Jongdae swears he hears the guy wincing as there's a sound of bang coming outside but Junmyeon seems to deal with the situation well, subtly letting his hand in an assuring manner rest against Zitao's knee under the table.

And then there are Jongin and Sehun who look such young and naive boys, and boys are what they really are, making Jongdae want to bite his lower lip hard in anger as he can't help thinking this is not a right place for them just like it's not a right place for Zitao. But the age doesn't matter in war, Jongdae knows that. There's nothing fair in war since even boys younger from Jongin and Sehun are the soldiers as long as they could shoot and kill a person, a proclaimed emeny, when being told so.

As the evening goes by and the total darkness takes control outside Jongdae feels the warmth inside which comes from the friendly warm looks and happy chatting of these strangers with whom he's supposed to fight together and bring the victory for their country. Maybe they could become friends too and some day enjoy the day of freedom and peace together.

Tomorrow would happen only tomorrow, and even if his life would end Jongdae could be always sure even without him the life itself would still continue. There's still hope.
