sorry for being a bit late!
i checked and this is continuation to a fic i wrote here about a year ago (?!). some more sailor!chanyeol and merman!baekhyun.
The anchor was hoisted at the crack of dawn when the first rays of the morning sun were peeking from behind the roofs of the port town and faraway mountains. Chanyeol was on the deck with Jongin and the rest of the crew when they waved goodbyes to their home port – they’d be gone on the voyage for weeks.
“Finally we’re going!” Jongin said, sounding both excited and nervous. It was his first longer voyage and looking at Jongin vividly reminded Chanyeol about himself a year or two back and he smiled.
“Just be careful and don’t fall overboard,” Chanyeol joked. “I wouldn’t want to be the one writing to your mother about it.”
Jongin blew a raspberry at him. “I don’t mean to! And the seas should be fine at this time of the year, right? There’s no need to worry.”
Chanyeol’s smile faltered a bit; there was suddenly a memory of the previous night flashing through his mind. The flamey red hair, piercing eyes and the tail in the water... Chanyeol still couldn’t believe he had seen it and the memory made chills run down his spine even in the warm morning sun. He remembered old men’s tales about how seeing merpeople was a bad omen during voyages. He couldn’t possibly tell Jongin about it, or anyone of the crew. No one would believe him.
“You’re right,” he eventually said to Jongin as they watched the port to disappear behind the cape. “There’s no need to worry.”
Chanyeol tried his best to forget about the merman, because he was afraid if he so much as thought about the creature he would summon bad luck over the ship. The work on board fortunately kept him so busy that he rarely had time to think about anything else than work, food or sleep. Still, sometimes when Chanyeol was by the gunwale looking at the sea or down to the foamy waves, he thought he saw a flash of red or a dolphin-like tail in the water, but when he blinked and looked again, there was nothing.
The Jeju Island had just disappeared in the horizon and they had taken the course towards the East China Sea and Shanghai when the weather suddenly got worse, heavy clouds blocking the sky and strong eastern wind making the ship sway. And soon after that came the rain. The crew was running around, trying to secure the cargo and quickly lowering the sails. Chanyeol was on one of the shrouds, trying to untangle couple of sail ropes when suddenly the whole world felt like tilting and Chanyeol lost his grip on the shroud rope.
The next moment, he was in the dark water, and panically floundered his way back on the surface. The waves were rough, his eyes and mouth were full of salty water and Chanyeol tried to call for help towards the dark shape of the ship before him but it felt like the wind, rain and the raging sea swallowed his cries.
This is because of the merman, Chanyeol thought while desperately trying to keep his head above the water. High waves kept washing over him, and each time it was more difficult to fight his way back to surface. I’ll die now because of it...
A new wave came, and this time he was too tired to fight.
Chanyeol came to with violent couching and spat out a mouthful of salty water. His throat hurt and he shivered, feeling cold rock under himself. But the pain and coldness meant only thing: he was alive. Chanyeol squinted his eyes in the bright daylight; the sky was clear again and the sea calm and perfectly blue. He carefully rolled over and lifted his head and saw that he was lying on a small islet. And before he had time to wonder what kind of divine power had saved him and moved him there, he met eyes with a red-haired boy that was looking at him from the water. The boy - the merman - smiled at him.
“Oh good, you didn’t die!”
