[TEAM ONE] The gold that matters
hello ^^ i'm Cata
although i've been in sonic team for a while, this feels like my shiritori debut lol
Even though it’s a little cooler out of the water, his chest and his heart are warm. The winter cold is not enough to make him run inside. He stands all bare, lost in the features of the boy still in the hot water. He sees Yuri leaning back against the rocks, eyes closed as he enjoys the water sloshing into his chest, caused by the movement of Victor having stepped out.
“Come on, Victor. Get back inside.”
The boy opens his eyes, wide and pleading, before Victor’s got a foot back in the water. “No!” He takes it out quickly, startling Yuri who stands up straight. The water reaches up to his hips, covering him, yet still distracting Victor. Swallowing, Victor points at the door. “We should head back. It’s late.”
Yuri stares at him, all the innocence on his face, blinking until he nods. He walks forward to the border of the bath, past the fountain in the center. His eyes never leave Victor’s face. “Is everything okay?”
Victor sees the insecurity in the pout of his lips before Yuri lowers his head. Victor kneels. It’s become a natural habit for him to hold Yuri’s chin and draw him closer. “What could be wrong?” He asks. His eyes traveling down to Yuri’s mouth.
“Do you… not want to spend time with me anymore?”
Victor pulls back falling on his butt, shocked by the absurdity of the question. “How can you say that?”
“Let’s stop talking in questions. Tell me if anything’s wrong.” Yuri’s voice shakes as much as his tight fists on the stone outside the water. His head is down, like he’s expecting something bad to come out of Victor’s mouth.
“Nothing’s wrong. Nothing could ever be wrong.” He leans closer, until his lips meet Yuri’s forehead. The expression of the boy when he leans back is one of the most beautiful sights Victor’s ever seen ‒ and Victor’s traveled all around the world.
“This is not about…?” Yuri rubs the center of his chest, the place a bronze medal touched a few days ago.
“It’s never been about that gold, Yuri.” Victor smiles. His thumb turns the ring around his finger, right in front of Yuri’s face. Blushing, Yuri lifts his head up again. Teary eyes stare straight at Victor. “It really is late…” Victor stands fast, back straight and head held up high. “And if you want to win the Grand Prix Final next year, we need to start training as soon as possible! I promise you, Yuri.” He points at the boy. “I will be the best coach. You may have not gotten gold this time, but you will next year!”
Gaping, Yuri looks at him. His eyes travel down Victor’s body and he looks to the side, swallowing. The blush spreads all the way to his ears, neck and chest. “Thank you, Victor,” he stutters as he says it.
Victor lowers his head again, body relaxing as he takes in the softness of Yuri’s face. How much it’s changed since the first time they met. How much Yuri’s confidence has grown. Insecurities can still be found, though, in the glassy eyes he gets when he sees the bronze medal. No matter how many times Victor tells him, Yuri still can’t see how successful he’s been. Yet, there’s something different now. The determination in his jaw when he trains, the way his stance changes when he steps on the ice.
Yuri comes out of the spring, splashing water all over Victor’s feet and walks to the door. He turns right before touching the knob. “Come on. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
softboys your turn :)
