[Team Three] All Is Right

Yet more Zero fic... but this time with a new pairing? |D I really enjoyed these guys’ dynamic and I feel like it was very underrated among fans. This is set at the end of episode 1, so it does contain some spoilers for the very first episode!

All is right in the world, Hiroshi thinks as he watches Zero fondly from the opposite side of the tent, eating his gyoza quietly while Chikara and Sunao chatter excitedly between themselves and Zero tends the little gas stove. Sure, it's a little surreal that they've somehow found themselves in the middle of a large-scale life-or-death competition to take over some massive corporation with underworld ties, but frankly, Hiroshi thinks, when it comes to Zero, anything is possible. After all, when Hiroshi himself had been on the brink of death, so hopeless in the reality of his dead-end job with endless hours of unpaid overtime that he'd rather have ended it all than face another day of life, Zero had been the one to pull him out, out of the car he'd rigged to fill with carbon monoxide and out of the black hole that had been his life up until that point. Zero was his savior, his light; Zero gave him purpose by including him as a member of his "gentlemen thieves" group and allowing Hiroshi to actually make something of himself. Sure, being a "gentleman thief" meant risking his life when going up against yakuza goons and other unseemly types, but it was worth it, in Hiroshi's mind, for Zero's cause. In fact, he thinks fondly, reflecting over the time he's known Zero, it would have been impossible before-- somehow, meeting Zero, having someone as amazing as Zero in his life had given Hiroshi the courage to do things he never thought possible before.

And so it's only right that they're here now, among the few winners of the selection round of the Dream Kingdom competition. They're here because Zero had gotten them through, Zero with his genius and his cleverness and his heart of gold. Of course the puzzle had been too hard for Hiroshi to figure out, and the pressure of the life-or-death situation too terrifying for him to have thought straight anyway, but he had trusted Zero absolutely, unshakably, and being the wonderful person that he was, Zero had saved him, too. He has to admit that he feels a bit smug that he had been right all along and Chikara wrong; who did Chikara think he was, asking Zero for proof of his theory? Zero had never led them astray before, Zero had never given them any reason not to trust him, and while maybe Chikara had been led astray, Hiroshi had known all along. He would always have followed Zero to the ends of the earth unquestioningly, but now that Zero has once again saved his life, he's even more assured.

Eventually, the festive mood dies down as the night continues on and the initial excitement fades away into tiredness after all of the rollercoasters they've gone through today, both in the yakuza hideout and then during the "Iron Ball" game. "Let's hurry up and get to bed early," Zero suggests, ever teacherly, ever knowing what's best, "After all, we don't know what's waiting for us tomorrow."

Chikara and Sunao both make some sort of verbal agreement before heading off in the direction of the bathrooms where, they had been told when they'd been directed to their tents, toothbrushes and other amenities were available to them, but Hiroshi can't find words inside of himself, can't find the will to do anything but gaze at Zero warmly, his admiration overwhelming him in the moment.

After seeing Chikara and Sunao off, Zero glances at his direction, a look of mild confusion playing across his features, and Hiroshi knows his expression must be odd, but he can't help it. "Hiroshi-san...?" Zero asks with a baffled smile, and he's so wonderful, so kind, so accepting of Hiroshi, even with all his faults, that Hiroshi feels like his heart can't handle it. Still, he forces an awkward laugh, trying to shrug it off but knowing that it probably looks more like he's awkwardly twitching.

"We don't know what's waiting for us tomorrow... but as long as we're with you, I know it'll be all right," he offers at length, and maybe that's weird, but he can't even bring himself to care. It's the truth, it's how he feels, and he's not ashamed.

For a split second, Zero's eyes widen, and Hiroshi worries that he's said something wrong, but after a moment his face eases into a warm smile. "Hiroshi-san... thank you," he replies gently taking a step closer and meeting Hiroshi's eyes, and as Hiroshi's heart feels like it's melting inside his chest, he thinks, the world couldn't possibly get more right than this.
