[Team Three] All Is Quiet, Not All Is Well
Sliding in at the last minute with some Hypnosis Mic.
Jakurai & Riou & Jyuto, 900w, T
"This way," the soldier says, ducking around into the drainage ditch at the side of the road. It looks the same as every other ditch they've waded through tonight, and if it were anyone else, Jakurai would begin to wonder if they were lost.
"Are you certain we can't travel on the road?" Jakurai asks. They've been paralleling the roads since they left the train station. The roads are narrow and poorly lit, Jakurai can count on one hand the number of cars they've seen. Jumping out of the way of an approaching car would be worth it in his estimation if it kept them out of the drainage ditches and irrigation channels. His feet have been soaked since stagnant water overflowed the tops of his boots barely twenty meters from the station, and his jacket might be a lost cause even with Hifumi's expert touch.
He almost laughs at his own internal complaints. He was getting soft in his old age. It wasn't that many years ago that he had trudged through far worse without a second thought. He'd found Riou in one such ditch. A chance encounter that had been only one of many at the time, but fate worked in mysterious ways, and it had brought their paths together again now. Officially, they are no longer allies but enemies, but the balance of a life is not so easily forgotten, and so he finds himself following a man from another division far out of either of territories under the cover of night.
"The road is too dangerous," Riou says. "The moon is bright tonight, and any stranger on the road will be visible for hundreds of meters. One may as well set off a signal flare to announce one's presence. It is perfect conditions for an ambush."
"And are you expecting an ambush?"
"It would be irresponsible not to. There has already been one. This territory is to be contested in the next Division Battle, and at least one of the divisions vying for control is not abiding by the rules."
"What was Yokohama Division doing out here to be caught in the crossfire?" Jakurai asks as he fits pieces together. The information he had been given previously was limited, only that his assistance was needed urgently, and it somehow involved Riou's crew.
"Not Yokohama Division," Riou corrects. "Jyuto. On police business."
"Then why did he not go through official channels? Surely it would have been faster than bringing me all the way out here on foot."
"Someone told the enemy that Jyuto would be present. His assignment wasn't widely know, but Jyuto doesn't know where the leak came from. This soldier trailed Jyuto just to be safe, and it is just as well. He would be in more trouble if this soldier had not witnessed the attack and brought him to safety. This way," Riou says before vaulting up the far side of the ditch into dense vegetation.
Jakurai follows more cautiously. It is summer now, and he would rather not startle a snake, or worse, a boar. He follows Riou more by sound than by sight; the moonlight is not as clear in the scrub, and the shadows are deeper and misleading.
"Jyuto," Riou calls softly several minutes later. "This soldier has returned with assistance. Riou Busujima Mason entering with one other. Don't shoot."
"Understood, Riou. Took you long enough," Jyuto replies from nearby. He voice lacks even a trace of the smug arrogance Jakurai has come to expect from him.
Jakurai follows Riou through a tangle of brambles into a small clearing. Clearing is perhaps too generous a word; it is more likely Riou saw the natural shelter and cleared a space just large enough for the two of them.
Jyuto is lying on the bare ground, one hand still on his gun, but at least it is not pointing at them, and his finger rests along the barrel, not in the trigger. Even in the dim light, Jakurai can see his pallor. His right leg is bent at an unnatural angle, and his suit is dark with what Jakurai hopes is mud, but could just as easily be blood.
Jakurai kneels beside him and takes his hypnosis mic from his pocket.
"If you turn that on around here, you may as well light a signal beacon for our location," Jyuto hisses. "Plus, what's to stop you from finishing me off right now while you have me defenseless?"
"You have little faith in the speed at which I can heal, but if it comes to that, I trust Riou will defend us, and I assure you, if I meant you harm, I would not have wasted the time it took to draw this weapon. I could have killed you a half dozen ways with my bare hands just in the time we have been speaking."
Jyuto turns to glare at him. "Riou may trust you, but I do not. How do I know you will keep your word?"
"Because I am a doctor, and you are in no condition to be anything but my patient right now. With my hypnosis microphone, I can heal you in seconds. With only my hands, I can treat your wounds, but not heal you entirely. As Riou can attest, these hands will cause you more pain before they soothe, but the decision is yours. Which do you choose?"
