[team four] untitled

hmm, something random this time. words are hard lately.

Baekhyun-centric, G, 956 words

Walking had become Baekhyun’s sort-of-hobby ever since moving to Tokyo. He didn’t know the city at all, and he deemed roaming the streets more effective than just riding trains or buses back and forth. So he started exploring his new neighborhood and surrounding areas by foot; he took walks after work and on his free days.

Sometimes he navigated with the help of Google Maps, sometimes, when feeling more adventurous, without. Sometimes he got lost, sometimes found a new shortcut, interesting looking restaurant or a pretty shrine. Sometimes he walked so far that he had to take a train back home. But no matter what, he always returned with a bit better grasp of Tokyo.

There was one area Baekhyun kept going back to, over and over again. Shin-Okubo and its Koreatown. He lived close enough that he could just walk there, which made it even easier. The main area of the town wasn’t even that large, and it was often very crowded, but Baekhyun found himself returning there anyway. He tried to tend his homesickness by eating Korean food at the restaurants and doing groceries in the area’s markets. It did help, even if just a little.

One Sunday, Baekhyun was bored and a bit homesick yet again, so on the walk, his feet took the already familiar route towards Shin-Okubo. Only this time, he mostly walked along the quieter side streets, trying to spot restaurants he hadn’t yet noticed and tried, and wondering how life was for the many Koreans living in the area. Farther from the bustling main street, the neighborhood seemed quite peaceful.

He took a couple of random turns on street corners and crossed one bigger street, straying away from the main area. He started to feel a bit weary from all the walking, and also thirsty. He wondered if he should turn around and return to some of the Koreatown’s cafés or restaurants because he was already more in the residential area. But just as he was thinking that, he walked by a small coffee shop that looked like it was squeezed between the surrounding buildings.

Baekhyun stopped on his tracks and looked at it, evaluating. All the signs were both in Korean and Japanese, so that probably meant the staff spoke Korean, as well. He wasn’t super confident with his elementary Japanese still. After pondering it for a couple more seconds, Baekhyun finally decided to enter.

The place was rather small with only a handful of small tables, but the interior was very cute and simple; a café you could find in any trendy neighborhood in Seoul, too. There were no other customers right then. When Baekhyun stepped further in, a woman appeared from the back behind the counter and welcomed him in Japanese. She was in her forties or fifties and sent out this very motherly aura.

Baekhyun stepped to the counter and after taking a quick look at the menu, turned his attention to the woman who was clearly waiting for his order.

“Hello…?” he said tentatively in Korean.

“Oh, hello,” the woman switched language right away, smiling sweetly. “What would you like?”

“Iced americano, please. M size.”

“That’d be 500 yen.”

Baekhyun paid and chose a table by the windows. He found it curious that there was a café like this in such a location. It didn’t seem like a street to attract many student girls, who would probably be the most appropriate clientele. They were all roaming the streets of Korea town a couple of blocks away. He was happy, anyway, that he’d managed to find a place where he could speak Korean without any trouble.

The woman brought him his drink and Baekhyun thanked her.

“Are you perhaps traveling here?” she asked in a friendly manner.

“No. Actually, I just moved here a while ago,” Baekhyun answered. “I’m exploring the neighborhoods.”

“Ah, is that so! Welcome, then. I hope you like it here.”

“Thank you. It’s okay,” he said and realized instantly how lame that sounded. The woman laughed a little, nodding knowingly.

“It’s good to have Koreatown, right? You probably miss the food and all.”

“I do.”

“Oh, but it’ll get easier by time. I remember I was like that at first when I moved here with my family.”

“How long have you been here?” Baekhyun asked.

“Let’s see... It’ll soon be 17 years.”

“Wow!” His own four-month command sounded quite pathetic in comparison. Baekhyun wondered if it would even be long enough to completely get over his homesickness phase.

The woman returned to the backroom and Baekhyun slowly sipped his coffee. It was good, and he thought the place was quite nice. The woman also seemed very sweet and friendly, so Baekhyun made a mental note to walk back to the café some other time. It felt nice to be able to just chat something in Korean.

When Baekhyun’s cup was empty, he stood up and got ready to leave. He didn’t quite make it to the door before it was pulled open and in marched a guy. Baekhyun had time to register long legs, huge baggy hoodie and quite a handsome profile under a baseball cap before the guy strode behind the counter and straight into the backroom. He could hear some muffled talking. So he was a worker there? Maybe that was the café’s Thing, they had staff that looked like kpop idols.

If that was the case, Baekhyun was a bit disappointed that the guy hadn’t been working when he came. The lady had been lovely, but he wouldn’t have minded if he’d been served by a tall, cute guy instead.

Well, Baekhyun thought while stepping out and heading back home, he’d definitely have to come back another time.

OH MYYYYYY how did i miss this, i can't believe???? but what a nice surprise this was indeed to notice you had written again! AND IT'S THAT JAPAN!AU. oh boyyyy, i've been waiting for this since you told about it and wrote that short chapter last time. ;;;; and don't underestimate yourself, words might be hard but you did well with this one! shiritori is srsly the best way to motivate oneself to write at least something haha. :D

(maaaaaan, i started missing japan when reading this!!! ;;; especially our crazy con trips there hahhahahaaa, and can you imagine how easy it was to imagine shin-okubo this time? XD and i thought about all the ICE and snow there while reading this, i don't know what season you were planning to have here but i couldn't help my imagination hahhahhahahaaa)

poor bbh not feeling like home, oh noooo i can understand the feeling. :( it must be hard for him and i just wanted to give him a hug and tell them it's hard in the beginning! good that he can go to shin-okubo and eat all the food and speak his language. ♥ and the signs are indeed in korean! i can also understand his struggle about going inside some café, i feel like i always have those stupid thoughts when i'm in korea and i'm lost whether i should speak my super broken elementary korean or just stick with english but what if the waitress doesn't understand me... HEH. ::D but he got customer service in korean and someone he could talk to!! sweet lady u__u ♥

AND THEN A MYSTERIOUS PERSON APPEARS, hmmmmmmm i WONDER who that is!!!!! a hoodie and a cap, hmmmm i have no clue??? XD LMAO looking like a kpop idol, yup!!! but don't worry bbh, i kinda have a strong feeling that you'll meet him soon again ;))))! HEHHHEHEHHEEE.

i bet it must be so nice and relaxing to write a fic when everything's located in japan! soooo familiar and soooo... home-like?? cozy! maaan, i srsly hope that you'll get inspiration to continue with this one, here's one very very eager reader - now that we're lacking fics in general it's super nice to get something new to read. :D ♥

A fellow Baekhyun fan <3 This made me smile. I really loved it. I could just picture him doing this, envisioned him when I read it ^_^. I had meant to comment on this sooner (when it was my turn before in shiritori).
