[Team Three] Minor Improvements

I'm back with more Star Trek banter featuring my favorite engineers. Geordi & Wesley, G, 400 words
The idea wasn't bad. In theory, it was light years beyond "not bad." Geordi hadn't seen such an elegant proof since he'd been in the Academy. His staff in Engineering were usually more concerned with keeping the ship moving and all parts operational than they were with creating the most elegant proof possible to show off as examples. Engineering ran on a principle of "good enough" most of the time; no one had time for proving hypotheticals when the ships anti-matter containment fields and hull shields always seemed to be developing unexpected problems, drawing previously unknown alien life, or coming under attack from hostile forces.

The problem with theory, was that the people writing it rarely had the practical experience to back up their claims. He'd seen so many theories that looked great on paper, only to discover that they fell apart the moment anyone tried to apply them to any sort of real-world application. Sure, a process that could increase warp drive efficiency by 25% sounded cool, but only before one read far enough to realize that the process also assumed a frictionless, massless spaceship occupying a single point in space, and the whole theory fall apart when applied to a real ship.

At least this time the person writing the theory knew how ships and engines worked for a change. "So explain to me how this program works again, Wes?" Geordi said. It might have been written by a knowledgeable ensign, but that didn't make it any more comprehensible to his eyes.

"It's a basic program I started for a school assignment, but I thought it might be useful for the ship," Wesley said. "It might take some adjusting to integrate it with our existing systems, but once that's done, it should take a lot of the strain off our central systems. If the ship comes under attack, we currently waste too much time making custom adjustments to the defense systems. If we can turn some of that rebalancing and surveillance over to one of the central processing terminals, that we can free up valuable resources for areas that need direct intervention."

"Yeah, I got that much, Wes," Geordi said. "Walk me through the specifics again. That's where I'm losing you."
