Small Ace Attorney ficlet, Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright pre-slash, 200 words, rated G.
He couldn't lose sight of everything he had worked so hard to achieve. What would he be without his career, his successes, his ability to punish those who had hurt others? He would never be weak nor vulnerable again; he was no longer that small, powerless boy suffocating in an elevator. Now, thanks to von Karma, he had the skills, the resilience, required to truly make a difference in the world, to make up for the mistakes he had made in the past.
The plan, he had thought, had been foolproof, but as it turned out he had severely underestimated the persistence and resilience of fools
When he'd first seen Phoenix Wright again he'd wanted nothing more than to wipe the idiotic smile from the other man's face, make him regret believing that there was anything of substance to extract beneath the veneer of demon prosecutor.
But Wright, damn him, had dug anyway, unearthing feelings Edgeworth had long thought deeply buried. The smile that had once aggravated him instead served only to drive him to distraction, his stomach tying itself into knots whenever he was in the other man's presence.
This could not be allowed to persist. It could not.
