[team two] on deaf ears
Sorry I'm a bit late, I really didn't want to skip.
Bakugo x Kirishima; PG; ~500 words
“You need to rest.” Kirishima say on reflex as he enters the kitchen, and then he pauses, swallowing thickly. Bakugo has been home a week, and despite it being constantly in the forefront of his mind, it’s surprising how often he forgets – Bakugo can’t hear him now.
He swallows again, clears his throat unnecessarily as he steps forward, trying no to startle Bakugo as he steps up beside him at the sink.
Bakugo makes no response, but he scrubs the pan in his hand more forcefully, tension stiffening his shoulders. Kirishima sighs, waits until he’s placing the pan, far more roughly than necessary, onto the draining board, and then he reaches for Bakugo’s hand, turning him to face him. Bakugo’s body turns, but his eyes remain on the sink until Kirishima lifts his other hand to cup his cheek.
“You need to rest.” he says again carefully, and it hurts that Bakugo’s eyes need to focus on his lips now instead of his eyes.
Bakugo’s eyes flash up to his in anger as he shoves Kirishima back with a soapy hand. Kirishima can almost hear his angry retort ‘I’m deaf, not incapable, I can wash fucking dishes.’. His mind supplies the line in perfect imitation of Bakugo’s voice, a sound he hasn’t heard since that night.
It wouldn’t do any good to tell him now, how stupid it was for Bakugo to jump into a fight with a villain that also had an explosion quirk when Kirishima was right there, unbreakable. It wouldn’t have done any good to tell Bakugo that at the time either, he’s always been the type to fight fire with fire – this time he got burned. He wouldn’t be beaten, firing off bigger and bigger explosions until the sound of their combined combustions was loud enough to deafen them both, would probably have deafened Kirishima if he weren’t hardened.
The toll it took on Bakugo’s body was rough too, skin scorched and littered with shrapnel, both arms broken – the bones shattered apart by the force of his quirk. Recovery Girl mended the bones, though it had completely drained Bakugo, but there was nothing to be done for his obliterated inner ears.
They knew this was coming, doctors have been warning Bakugo for years that constant exposure to explosions would damage his ears, but Bakugo was too damn stubborn to handicap himself by incorporating ear defenders into his costume. So they knew it was coming, one-day. Not so soon. Not so suddenly. Not so irreparably.
Bakugo’s arm trembles as he lifts the next pan. “Pushing yourself…” he starts but the words trail off – falling on deaf ears. He reaches to take the pan from him and shove it back into the soapy water before turning Bakugo to face him again. “Pushing yourself won’t help you heal faster. Your arms need to rest…” he says slowly.
He’s meant to be on bed-rest for another week at least...as for what will become of his career after that…
