[Team Three] Compliments of the Chef
In which Kaoru is bad at admitting that he likes Kojiro's cooking. Sk8 Joe/Cherry, 400w, G
"Beg if you want it that badly," Kojiro said. He garnished dishes with sprigs of mint and curls of parsley as he spoke, not even bothering to look up from his work to where Kaoru was perched at the counter.
"I don't beg," Kaoru countered, "and if I did, I certainly wouldn't waste it on a musclebound chef with an overinflated ego."
"You wound me. If memory serves me right, you were singing a very different tune just last month in Italy. The great Sakurayashiki Kaoru groveling and pleading to visit just one more restaurant before we left."
"That was not groveling. I was simply observing that the flight from Italy to Japan is a long one, and it seemed ill-advised to begin the trip on an empty stomach, especially with airline food being what it is. It's not my fault if some people choose to prioritize the moment over any sort of thought for the future."
Kojiro smiled and took another empty plate from the stack beside him. "So it was entirely a matter of practical considerations that had nothing to do with your weakness for soft roasted garlic and the finest olive oil served over a bed of the freshest homemade pasta you have ever tasted?" With each new word, he added to the plate in front of him and fanned the rising steam in Kaoru's direction.
At last, Kaoru had had enough and snatched the plate from Kojiro's hands. "Since you don't seem to know where this plate is going, I'm taking it off of your hands before you drop it. I'm doing you a favor and preventing food waste or a messy accident; that's all."
Kojiro handed a knife and fork across the counter. He waited until Kaoru's mouth was full before he leaned across the counter to whisper in his ear. "I challenge you to a Beef," he said. "If I win, then you will come here and beg me to feed you."
Kaoru glared at Kojiro over the top of his glasses, but a moment later, he murmured, "and when I win?"
"What do you want me to beg for, Princess?"
"Wouldn't you love to find out?"
Kojiro straightened, returning to the work of the dinner rush as if he'd never stopped. "So, do we have a deal?" he asked.
"We have a deal."
