[team two] untitled
i managed to scramble together some words, yay.
same universe i wrote earlier this year, with bartender!juri and salarymen!jesshin.
mostly Juri, Jesse, Shintaro | G | 614 words
Something was bugging Juri that day, but he couldn’t pinpoint what exactly. It was a tiring week full of long shifts and it seemed like his crappy sleeping schedule was finally getting the better of him. Whatever the reason, he was tired and a bit snappy so he tried to stay back at the bar that evening, letting Shoki handle most of the customers while he cleaned up and managed the dishes. Luckily it was Wednesday which meant fewer customers and shorter business hours.
During one quiet moment Shoki was out for a quick cigarette break and Juri was behind the counter checking his phone, when he heard the door open and in walked three young salarymen chatting cheerfully. Juri straightened up at once, put his phone away and braced himself.
The trio sat themselves on the side counter and that’s when Juri recognized Jesse and Shintaro, who were almost like regulars nowadays. Juri knew they worked at an office nearby and often came by for after work beers. The third guy was someone Juri didn’t know.
The three looked up at Juri, Jesse and Shintaro giving him wide grins and like forgetting his earlier reluctance of serving anyone that day, Juri walked up to them, smiling.
“Good evening! The usuals?” he asked and Jesse nodded but Shintaro patted him on the shoulder.
“Shouldn’t we try something different this time since Kouchi-senpai is here to pay?”
“Ooh, good idea,” Jesse agreed. “Shots? Cocktails? Whiskey?”
“I agreed to buy one round,” the third guy pointed out. “But go ahead, order what you want.”
Jesse started flipping through the drink menu while Shintaro nudged Juri’s arm lightly. “Recommend something to me.”
“Uh, we have a couple of nice craft beers you’d probably like. Japanese, German and British.”
“Oh, I’ll try the British one!”
“And this red wine for me,” Jesse said, pointing at the page.
“One glass?”
“The whole bottle!”
After that, it felt more like hanging out with friends than working. There weren’t many other customers so Juri was able to stay and chat with Jesse, Kouchi and Shintaro. He was happy to see that Shintaro liked the beer he’d recommended and ordered another glass after the first one.
The three guys talked about their work, the drama in the office and rumored romances between their colleagues, filling Juri in on the gossip. It was weirdly entertaining even though he didn’t know any of the people. They even talked about the mixer party Jesse and Shintaro had attended a while ago.
“Well, how was it?” Juri asked Shintaro, feeling a weird twist in his stomach. “Many dates lined up now?”
“Nah,” Shintaro said. “Didn’t really click with anyone.”
“Oh, too bad,” Juri said automatically. He tried to sound like he actually meant it.
“He’s just too picky,” Jesse put in, shaking his head. “I, on the other hand, did exchange numbers with some girls and I’m supposed to meet up with one of them this weekend. Wish me luck!”
They all did and Kouchi ordered them a new round of drinks (he’d apparently forgotten about the only one round rule).
Juri went to pour their beers, nodding to Shoki who appeared from the backroom.
“Well, what happened to you?” Shoki asked, looking at Juri.
“Why?”
“You don’t look like you want to punch people anymore. It’s thanks to those guys, I guess.”
Juri glanced over at Shintaro, Jesse and Kouchi. Shintaro turned his head just then, locking eyes with Juri and giving him a small grin.
“Yeah, I guess,” Juri said.
He took the beers and walked back to the trio. He secretly wished they would stay for the rest of his shift.
