[Team One] Kiss me like one of your fairy tales

~1700 words of g-rated soriku-- Riku accidentally curses Sora, leaving Sora without a voice.

“Speak no more of it.”

Sora opened his mouth to protest but found no sound came out. Startled, Sora coughed, cleared his throat, and tried again. His vocal cords worked, but no sound emerged. Instead, he made a noise reminiscent of a cat clearing a hairball.

Riku raised an eyebrow at Sora’s obvious distress. “Cat got your tongue?”

Sora huffed, motioning at his throat. He tried again to speak. To protest! To even hum a little in derision at Riku’s obvious amusement.

But still… nothing.

Finally, Riku grasped the severity of the situation as Sora continued to make sick cat noises. “Oh. Shit.”

Sora raised an eyebrow, pointing at Riku’s chest in an obvious gesture of ‘WHAT DID YOU DO?’

“I didn’t do anything Sora! I just… told you to stop talking. I guess.”

Sora huffed, poking Riku’s chest with his pointer finger. Riku exhaled sharply in surprise.

“I told you, I have lots of chores I have to get done today. And then the training this afternoon, and then—”

Sora poked again. He may have lost his voice spontaneously, but he always knew how to get a point across.

“I know…” Riku sighed deeply. “I suppose a day off won’t kill anyone.”

Sora huffed and nodded before pointing at his throat.

“Well, except your vocal cords apparently. Let’s go check in with Aqua to see what the heck I just did.”

“You cursed him. On accident.” Aqua tilted her head as she watched Sora try to speak once more. “It’s honestly sorta impressive. I didn’t think you could do that accidentally.”

Sora crossed his arms and tapped his foot. Aqua hummed, then turned to Riku for translation.

“He wants to know when it’ll wear off.” Riku at least had the decency to look ashamed. Even exhausted from magic and physical training, only Riku would somehow manage to curse Sora by accident. “Sora, I swear I didn’t mean to!”

Sora hummed, or at least, he tried to. When no sound came out he settled for poking Riku’s chest again.

“I know, I’m sorry. It’s still my fault.”

“Well… since you didn’t do it with intent, it’s hard to tell if it’s going to wear off.” Aqua’s tone was a little hesitant. “You didn’t set a time limit, or a rule to break it.”

“I didn’t mean to do it at all. I just… wanted him to drop the conversation.”

“Which was?”

Riku looked away, not meeting Aqua’s eyes. “He wanted me to take a break.”

Aqua sighed. “Riku… have you been overworking your magic again?”

Riku looked to the ground. “Didn’t think I was.”

Sora glared at him. Unlike the magic migraines Sora got when he overused his own magic stores, Riku’s magic tended to get… unreliable when overworked. Unpredictable. In that state, Riku could summon a lightning bolt intending to take out a single target and end up obliterating the training field entirely. Sora was lucky he was just accidentally cursed and not miniaturized.

Again.

“So… how can I fix it?” Riku asked.

Aqua pursed her lips in thought. “Well… Yen Sid, Merlin, and the Fairy Godmother are still on their holiday retreat, so I don’t want to ask them until the get back. I suppose we could wait the usual times that curses tend to fade away: anywhere between 16 hours and 16 years.”

Sora would have yelped in protest, but as it was he just let out another strangled cat sound. Riku looked appropriately guilty. But there was no way Sora was gonna wait 16 hours, much less 16 years, to get his voice back!

Aqua chuckled as Sora stamped his foot in a very Donald-like gesture. “You could always do the tried and true method of curse breaking: a kiss from your true love.”

Sora felt his face heat up, and he quickly avoided Riku’s gaze.

“I suppose we could go find Kairi,” Riku mumbled. “She’s doing some off-world training in Agrabah, right? We can let her know. I’m sure she’ll be back by tonight and you’ll get your voice back Sora.”

Sora felt his face heat up even more and he studiously avoided Riku’s look, his eyes finding Aqua’s instead. Aqua offered a small, knowing smile and glanced in Riku’s direction. Evidently, she didn’t need Riku to translate Sora’s expression here.

Then Aqua turned back to Sora, raising an eyebrow as Riku continued to mumble about letting Kairi know, pulling out his Gummiphone to message her. Sora furrowed his brow at Aqua’s look.

No. No way. Not like this.

Aqua shrugged slightly, shaking her head as if to say ‘Boys!’

Inwardly Sora groaned, looking up when he heard Kairi’s voice answer Riku’s call. Riku must have already explained the situation because Kairi’s next words sent another bolt of embarrassed dread through Sora.

“Riku. That’s not gonna work. Sora and I don’t love each other like that.”

“Yeah but… it might be worth a shot? There’s no one else who—”

“Really? No one else?”

If Sora’s voice hadn’t been gone right now, he would have been quickly trying to change the subject to literally anything else. Sora was totally fine waiting 16 years! As long as Riku never found out that Sora liked him.

Liked him, liked him.

Liked him in the ‘if this was reciprocated it’d totally be true love’s kiss’ type way.

While Sora was still panicking, he heard Kairi’s voice over the phone. “Is Sora there?”

Riku handed the phone over, his brow furrowing as he finally noticed Sora’s panicked expression. ‘You okay?’ he mouthed with a head tilt.

Sora offered up a sheepish expression, barely catching Riku’s concerned gaze before he turned to Kairi’s own. He waved a little hesitantly.

“So you really lost your voice?”

In answer, Sora tried to tell her hello but only released a wheeze.

Kairi’s concern only grew. “Does it hurt?”

Sora quickly shook his head, shrugging and making a gesture that he hoped translated as “frustrated and annoyed.”

Finally, Kairi cracked a smile. “And yet you still won’t try the kissing solution?”

Sora’s face heated up, and he heard footsteps quickly walk away. He didn’t even need to look up to know Riku had left the room. He looked over at Aqua, who was staring at the door in concern.

Sora looked back at Kairi who sighed.

“He left the room, didn’t he?”

Sadly, Sora nodded.

“You know it’s not because he doesn’t think of you like that, right? It’s because he thinks that you still think of me like… that.” Kairi groaned. “But you don't, right? You love me. But not like how Riku loves you.”

Sora had been nodding along to Kairi’s questions, but that last statement brought him up short and he opened his mouth on instinct to protest.

“Sora…” Kairi interrupted. “C’mon. You two read each other so well except on this one point. It’s like it’s always been there between you two you’ve just overlooked it.”

“It’s so overt, it’s covert,” Aqua added from her place beside her desk. She chuckled when Sora huffed in reply.

“Just… try?” Kairi said. “I’ll come home and we can try too, if you really want. True love isn’t always romantic, you know that. But… I really think what you two have is romantic. And it will work.”

Sora exhaled sharply, looking up at Aqua who nodded in encouragement. Then he turned back to Kairi, nodding once. She smiled in response before waving goodbye and hanging up.

With a silent wave to Aqua, Sora left her office, his feet already leading him to where he knew Riku would be.

There was a balcony on the fourth floor that overlooked the training yard. It wasn’t the ocean view from the paopu tree, but it was comforting all the same.

It was Riku’s favorite place to brood.

Sure enough, Sora spotted a familiar head of silver hair as he turned the corner. The breeze was gentle at this hour, and the sun was just starting to set over the horizon. His heart pounding in both anticipation and nerves, Sora stepped out onto the balcony, joining Riku at the railing.

“Kairi coming back?”

Sora shrugged, then shook his head, tapping the phone before handing it back to Riku.

“Gonna try to wait it out first?” Riku put his phone back in his pocket. “That’s fair. Not sure how romantic a first kiss would be if it were to break a curse…”

‘I know at least 3 princesses who would disagree with you,’ Sora thought. ‘Including me if Kairi’s right about this.’

Outwardly, Sora poked Riku’s chest again to get his attention. Once those blue-green eyes were on him Sora hesitated. How could he ask for a kiss without…?

Finally, he settled on raising the hand on Riku’s chest to gently touch a finger to Riku’s lips, before bringing the finger to his own, raising an eyebrow.

Interestingly, Riku’s cheeks turned a pretty shade of pink, but Riku’s eyes remained steadily focused on his own.

“Sora, I— I can’t. It’ll hurt— if I—” Riku closed his eyes, a pained look taking over his face. “You’re more than just a friend to me. If I kiss you, I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep it friendly.”

Sora’s heart beat faster at the confession, and he quickly poked Riku’s lips again, bringing the fingers to his own lips eagerly, this time raising both eyebrows.

Riku’s eyes had flown open at Sora’s touch and he hesitated but eventually leaned in closer.

Sora met him halfway, their lips meeting in a shy, gentle kiss that sent sparks of electricity down Sora’s spine and he let out a quiet groan.

A groan!

“My voice!” Sora said though the words were muffled against Riku’s lips. Laughing Sora broke away, excited to hear the sound of his own voice. Riku looked pleasantly surprised too, joining in Sora’s laughter.

“Glad I didn’t have to wait 16 years to hear your voice again.”

“Oh, I hope you enjoy the sound 'cause I am never gonna stop talking!” Sora laughed again, leaning in to kiss Riku’s cheek.

“I could live with that,” Riku’s grin only grew as he raised a hand to brush over where Sora’s lips had just been. “I could also live with more of that..”

Sora’s grin widened. “As long as I don’t have to wait 16 years for you to kiss me again.”

Next up is nichi/oathbreaker! your line is "As long as I don’t have to wait 16 years for you to kiss me again."
