[Team four] trapped and trying

My favorite trope is characters trapped beneath rubble, so I figured I'd try to finally write it. Here's a start, at least.

Yu Yu Hakusho; about 600 words; rated t

Yusuke groans, head throbbing as he tries to sit up. It feels like someone's been using his forehead as the perfect place to try out tap dancing while he was... sleeping? Knocked out? Huh. He can't remember.

"Don't get up."

A pair of hands press gently down on his chest and shoulder, and Yusuke decides everything is too fuzzy at the moment to fight back. Besides, the voice sounds familiar.

He blinks a few times until his vision clears, and sees Kurama smiling down at him. His red hair looks messier than usual, like he'd walked through a tornado just a few minutes ago, and there's a scrape on his cheek stretching all the way down his chin. There's a little bit of blood, but Yusuke isn't worried about a little scratch like that. Kurama has had plenty worse.

"You got thrown through a wall," Kurama explains, but continues to give him a reassuring smile. "You'll live, but I need you to stay still for just a bit longer."

Yusuke would rather jump up and get moving again, but Kurama knows best. If he says Yusuke can't get up yet, he better stay put. Besides, he's starting to remember what happened.

"Did... uh, did the demon we were fighting freaking explode?" he asks.

He vaguely remembers the temperature of the room ratcheting up like a broken thermostat in the dead of summer, and cracks beginning to appear across the demon's skin, like glowing lava about to burst forth from a volcano.

"I'm afraid so," Kurama answers.

"What an idiot."

He knew he was losing the fight and decided to go out with as much damage as possible.

Kurama just sighs in agreement, still focused on whatever damage he's trying to heal on Yusuke's body. He's tempted to try to look down and see the problem, but he thinks the room might start spinning if he angles his head that way. He's not sure where exactly he might be injured because, other than his throbbing head, everything else feels kind of numb. He hopes that's thanks to one of Kurama's plants.

"Where's Kuwabara and Hiei?" Yusuke asks. He doesn't sense their energy nearby, and they were definitely all together during the fight.

"Hiei was able to grab Kuwabara and get them out of the building in time," he answers. "Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough to do the same for us."

"Hey," Yusuke says, not liking the deprecating tone of Kurama's voice. "You did what you could, and neither of us are dead. Don't beat yourself up over it."

He thinks about the first time he met Kurama, ready and willing to die to save his mother. He thinks about how he didn't hesitate to jump in front of Hiei's sword to protect him the first time they fought side by side. He thinks about every battle of the Dark Tournament where he gave 110 percent to make sure they lived to fight the next round all the way to the end.

No one can say Kurama doesn't try his hardest to protect and save everyone when it counts.

"Thank you, Yusuke."

Yusuke hopes his words helped since that sounded genuine. He can't currently see Kurama's face, so whatever he's focused on healing, it isn't near Yusuke's head.

With nothing else to do, Yusuke focuses on the ceiling overhead.

And that's when he realizes the ceiling is a lot closer than it should be, and that it's being held up from collapsing on them by a tangled mess of Kurama's vines.

He realizes belatedly that they're still trapped inside the building -- unlike Hiei and Kuwabara who escaped to safety. No wonder Kurama was upset.

Yusuke doesn't blame him though. Clearly, he's been hurt bad enough to need help, and of all his teammates, Kurama is probably the best equipped to take care of first aid shit. He giggles, suddenly imagining Kuwabara trying to be a nurse and putting bandages in all the wrong places.

Kurama leans back into his line of sight, looking concerned.

Shit, okay, maybe he's concussed.

"I'm fine," he lies, and then decides the best idea is just to change the subject. "What's the plan for getting out of here?"
