[Team four] evening tea

Can't stop, won't stop writing Ultraman Arc fics! I guess this is who I am as a person now 😂

Yuma/Shu; g-rated; 637 words

The kettle howls in the kitchen, and Shu moves quickly to silence it.

He rarely goes through the motions of making tea – he still thinks the level of caffeine is paltry compared to his beloved coffee and he doesn't fully understand the appeal – but Yuma had asked for tea this evening, and Shu isn't inclined to tell him no.

With the water ready, Shu busies himself with grabbing the tea bags and finding a suitable mug from the cabinet. After finally pouring the tea, he adds a bit of sugar to Yuma's cup and stirs.

Before they met, Shu would have turned up his nose at the idea of drinking tea in the evening, let alone a cup sweetened to Yuma's tastes. Shu used to be so set in his ways, never deviating from his routine. He knew exactly what he enjoyed, and that was that. There was no reason to change anything.

But since he's moved to Hoshimoto City and started working with the SKIP team, Shu has found himself confronted with all sorts of things that he'd never considered before. And most of that is thanks to Yuma, who has constantly challenged him to think outside of the box and see things from different perspectives.

Shu thinks he's become more open-minded, more willing to imagine new possibilities that his old self wouldn't have even dreamed of.

Maybe that's why Shu loves Yuma so much.

Or, one of the reasons anyway.

He watches the swirling liquid in Yuma's cup as he stirs and considers that perhaps... he could pour a small cup of tea for himself tonight as well. The coffee beans will still be there tomorrow, after all.

He taps the spoon on the rim of the mug, and then sets it in the sink to wash later. With Yuma's tea done, it doesn't take him long to fix the other cup, though he skips the sugar for himself and only fills it halfway.

Steam rises off the top of both cups, carrying the pleasant aroma of tea with it.

Drinks ready, Shu grabs them and makes his way to the couch where Yuma is still curled up reading a book. He's been planted there since right after dinner, engrossed in turning page after page. It's the first volume of Shu's favorite detective series, and he's glad Yuma wanted to try it out.

"Here you go," he says, offering up the tea.

"Thank you," Yuma says, just noticing Shu's return. He quickly marks his place in the book and takes his mug.

Shu watches a smile settle across Yuma's face after he takes the first sip. He always feels better when he can do something to make Yuma smile.

He drinks a bit of his own tea. It's certainly not the bitter taste of coffee, but it's still warm and satisfying in its own way.

"What part of the story are you at?"

Yuma flips the book back open. "Just got to chapter five. Detective Bon Hebon is going to interview the neighbor across the street."

Shu grins. "Oh, you're getting close to my favorite scene in the whole book."

"Really?" Yuma raises his eyebrows, curious. "How about we read it together then?"

"That sounds like an excellent idea. We could take turns reading aloud?"

"Sure," Yuma nods.

Shu sits down on the couch beside Yuma and takes the book. Yuma shifts – carefully so he doesn't spill the tea mug cradled in his hands – until he's pressed up against Shu's chest. Shu wraps one arm around Yuma and holds the book open with his other hand.

It's comfortable and cozy sitting here like this, breathing in the scents of Yuma's shampoo and the tea mingling together. He begins to read out loud, the familiar words of his favorite story filling the air of the apartment.
