[team two] Overtime

some random snippet of my kochijesse office!au.

kochi & jesse | PG | ~1,020 words

”You always do this,” Jesse groans, voice full of indignation. He crosses his arms and stands by Kochi’s desk like a huge, judging shadow.

”Do what?”

This!” Jesse waves his hand at Kochi’s screen, which is full of charts, and Kochi’s desk, which is full of documents and invoices. ”You always decline the nomikai invitations because of work. You promised me you’d attend this one.”

”I know, but what can I do?” Kochi asks with a sigh. ”Miyadate is on sick leave and these need to be filed today.”

He has been working on the endless invoice pile for the whole day and really wishes he manages to clear it before midnight. It isn’t the first time Kochi’s doing overtime until ungodly hours, and definitely won’t be the last time, either. In this team, he’s used to it. Not that it makes breaking his promise to Jesse any easier.

Jesse gives him a frustrated sigh in return. He looks resigned. Kochi smiles at him apologetically.

“I’m sorry, alright. I’ll come to the next one for sure. Even if I had to quit for that.”

Jesse snorts. “Now, now. Don’t give promises you can’t keep. Well, I guess I'll have to leave you to it now. Do your best, senpai!”

“Thanks. And you have fun!” Kochi waves at Jesse who turns around and disappears down the corridor towards the elevators.

The other workers are also getting up and ready to go home, calling out goodbyes to each other. Little by little, the desks empty around Kochi, until he’s the only one left in the wide open space. His small desk lamp stays on while the other lights are turned off.

In the dim, silent office Kochi sits and stares at the screen, tapping away on his keyboard. Rows, numbers and letters are flashing through his tired vision and the pile is shrinking by the minute. His eyes hurt, his head hurts, he’s thirsty and hungry, but the sooner he gets this done, the better.

Kochi doesn’t even look at the clock until the need to pee gets too overwhelming and he has to get up and take a short break. He stretches his arms and back as he walks to the bathroom. On his way back, he gets a canned coffee from the vending machine, to help him get through the last spurt.

When Kochi sits down on his desk, he realizes he only has a dozen documents left. A dozen! And it’s not even 10pm yet. Kochi takes a long swig of the coffee and grabs a new invoice.

After a moment, his fingers halt over the keyboard. Kochi pricks up his ears and listens. There’s a faint noise coming from somewhere. Rattle and steps. Kochi furrows his brows. He’s thought he’s the only poor soul working so late.

When the noises continue (now he hears a door opening and closing, too) curiosity gets the better of him and Kochi stands up. He carefully walks down the corridor that looks as empty as before. But when Kochi peeks into the kitchen area, he sees something peculiar.

There are two convenience store bags in the middle of the table, as well as a couple of cans of coffee and energy drinks. Kochi’s just peeking into the other bag when a voice behind him startles him.

“There you are!”

Aah, what the he—Jesse?!”

Jesse grins at him as he walks into the kitchen. He looks chipper and a bit drunk, though it’s always somewhat hard to tell.

“What are you doing here?” Kochi splutters, entirely confused. “What about the nomikai?”

Jesse just shrugs as he starts unpacking the konbini bags.

“It was ok but I just couldn’t get into the mood. Fuma was totally on a roll with his new teammates, though, he kept buying rounds for everyone. I don’t know, I got up to get some fresh air and before I knew it, I was walking back to the office. I thought you probably hadn’t eaten anything so I dropped by a store on the way.”

Jesse pulls out two konbini meals from the bags and Kochi’s stomach growls at the sight of them.

“I didn’t know which one you’d prefer so I got a kyudon and a karaage set. And these drinks. Choose your favorite! And then there should be chocolate bars somewhere…”

Kochi watches as Jesse fusses with the bags and the meals, pulling out cutlery and napkins, and he smiles to himself as something warm swells inside him. He can’t quite believe Jesse ditched a drinking party and came back to the office to deliver a meal to him.

“Okay, how much work do you have left?” Jesse asks. “Do you want to eat now and continue after that or…?”

“I’m almost done,” Kochi tells him. “I have like, five documents left.”

“What? Really? That’s great! Go and finish them and I’ll warm up the dishes meanwhile.”

Kochi does as told and files the last documents in record time. He feels victorious as he turns off the computer, pushes back his chair and retreats back to the kitchen.

“Thank you, Jesse,” Kochi says and really means it as he finally digs into the karaage set.

“Don’t mention it,” Jesse answers, mouth full of rice.

“I do feel a bit bad that you’re here with me and not in the nomikai having fun…”

“Hey, I’m having fun now! Actually, more fun than back there. Since I’m with my favourite senpai.”

Kochi looks at his junior colleague – well, his friend, really – across the table and feels the earlier warmth spreading wider. Jesse always says these things so lightly and easily. Kochi envies him for that.

“Well, I am grateful,” he says again and takes another bite of the karaage.

“Wanna go for drinks after this?” Jesse then asks, eyes gleaming. “You deserve a couple after today’s chore!”

Well, Kochi can’t argue with that. Nor with that annoyingly dazzling smile of Jesse’s.

“Alright.”

In the end, Kochi gets home way too late and way too drunk, but he has no regrets.
