[team two] Beer with me

the beginning for the jesshin dating au i've been meaning to write for some time already!

Jesse/Shintaro | PG-13-ish? | ~1,500 words

“Both. Both’s good.”

That was Shintaro’s answer when Juri had asked whether he wanted to join Juri’s company’s drinking party or karaoke outing after that. Of course both. He’d been begging for an invite for quite some time. The parties of Juri’s company always sounded like a blast and included Shintaro’s favourite elements: eating good food, drinking beer and singing.

So now Shintaro was sitting beside Juri around a long izakaya table, raising the first toast of the evening and nodding jovially to the people around him. Juri tried his best to introduce Shintaro to everyone in their vicinity and then point out the rest. There were too many names and faces to remember, though. Takahashi, Kawaguchi, Kawai-senpai, Arioka-senpai, Mukai…

“Oh, and there’s Kochi, from my team,” Juri said, pointing at the other end of the table.

“Do you remember him? And that’s his half-American friend next to him, I think. I don’t know his name…”

Shintaro followed Juri’s gaze and saw his coworker Kochi talking with a guy who looked like a tropical parrot among ordinary, monochrome birds: the guy’s hair was greenish blue and his shirt colorful and patterned, with many neon colored accessories hanging from his neck and wrists.

“Kochi and a friend,” Shintaro repeated dutifully, turning back to Juri and the people near him.

He was just wondering whether the young guy across from him was called Takahashi or Takaishi when a loud laughter erupted from the other end of the table. A comically loud HAHAHAHA carried above it all, making all of them look over to Kochi’s colorful and, apparently, loud companion.

Shintaro exchanged an amused glance with Juri, but any possible comments died on his lips as they started getting first food plates just then, and Juri’s coworkers wanted to know more about him (“So Juri told us you’re a teacher. What subjects do you teach?”).

For a moment Shintaro simply enjoyed the very things he’d come there for: good food, beer and getting to know new people. New delicious dishes kept on coming, as did new drinks, and soon he was engrossed in a heated discussion with Juri and Takahashi-or-Takaishi about Knives Out and whether it was better to play with Switch or computer.

Takahashi-or-Takaishi was still lecturing Shintaro about the different controls and settings when Juri excused himself to go to the bathroom. Shintaro gulped down the rest of his lemon sour and snatched the last yakitori stick from the nearest plate, nodding along to the monologue of Juri’s young coworker.

“Sorry, is this seat free?”

Shintaro looked up and saw the loud and colorful friend of Kochi’s standing by him. He looked very tall up close, all lean legs in matching colorful patterned shorts.

“Um, sure it is,” Shintaro heard himself saying and the guy sat down on Juri’s vacated seat. For a second, Shintaro felt a tickling panic in his stomach at the possibility of having to speak English with the guy, but the worry dissolved as soon as he spoke again.

“I wanna get to know this side of the table, too,” the guy said with a smile and perfect Japanese. “I’m Jesse. Nice to meet you!”

Relieved, Shintaro answered Jesse’s smile. Up close he could tell that on top of being tall, colorful and loud, the guy was also very, very handsome.

“Shintaro. Likewise.”

Jesse looked at him curiously. “So are you an animator or a game developer or something like that?”

“Um, I’m a teacher actually,” Shintaro said with a laugh. “I’m here with my friend, I don’t work for the company.”

“Oh, okay! That explains.”

“Explains what?”

“Why Kochi didn’t know you.”

“Yeah, we’ve only met briefly before—”

“Excuse me?”

Shintaro was cut off by a waiter who’d suddenly appeared with a tray full of new drinks. “Two highballs here?”

“Uh, for me,” Jesse said, raising his hand. “But I only ordered one…”

“I can take the other,” Shintaro offered instantly, his earlier drink finished already.

“Alright!” Jesse grinned at him and clinked their glasses together. “No one over there wanted one, they said it’s too strong.”

”Pfft, nonsense. And we came here to drink, right?”

”Exactly!” Jesse beamed at him. ”Cheers!”

Juri returned just then, giving Shintaro and Jesse a questioning glance. ”What the hell, I got up for like two minutes.”

”Sorry, dude,” Jesse quipped before Shintaro could say anything. ”Can you go and sit with Kochi for a while? I wanna chat with Shintaro here.”

Surprisingly, Juri agreed without more protests, but Shintaro did hear his sigh and silent muttering as he went.

”Why me though?” Shintaro wanted to know when Juri had gone.

”You seem interesting and cool,” Jesse said easily with a grin, throwing Shintaro off with his straightforwardness. And his words weren’t the only straightforward part. Also the way he looked straight in Shintaro's eyes, the way he sat kind of close, the way he bumped their shoulders together like they’d known each other for ages instead of five minutes. Must be the American side of him, Shintaro mused while sipping his drink.

Granted, Shintaro also found Jesse interesting. He soon discovered that Jesse worked as a personal trainer at a popular gym in Shinjuku, and that’s where he and Kochi had met each other a couple of years ago. His father was American, originally from Las Vegas, but Jesse had been born and raised in Japan.

Despite that, Jesse apparently did have little difficulties with kanjis, as he asked for Shintaro’s help with reading the menu, or with the way he struggled to remember certain words. Shintaro thought he heard some others around them snicker at Jesse at times, but in his opinion Jesse was the amazing one for speaking two languages fluently. In fact, he found the occasional fumbling endearing.

Jesse also matched his drinking speed. They drained the highballs, then got another round of beers, then glasses of wine for the heck of it, then beers again. Shintaro was thrilled. Juri, his usual drinking buddy, was a total lightweight and often changed to non-alcohol beer after two glasses.

Jesse clinked their new beers together, spilling some of his on the table.

“Oops,” he giggled. “Sorry. Beer with me, dude.”

Shintaro laughed. That was one thing about Jesse, too, apparently. He seemed to love puns. Shintaro enjoyed them well enough himself, but he was no match to the other guy. He did try, though.

“Ale’s well,” he said, earning a satisfying HAHAHA from Jesse.

Giggling, Jesse leaned against Shintaro’s side, dropping his head on his shoulder. “Ah, my stomach hurts. You’re the best.”

Suddenly, Shintaro was feeling kind of hot. He could smell Jesse’s hair and perfume, and Jesse’s laughter vibrated through him pleasantly.

I’m drunk, Shintaro concluded. That must be it.

Then, Jesse raised his head and looked at him. Damn, he was so handsome. And so close Shintaro could make out the faintest stubble on his upper lip. For a split second, Shintaro’s eyes dropped to Jesse’s lips, which looked plump and glossy and—

Okay, it wasn’t just drunkenness.

Shintaro shifted on his seat a bit, making Jesse sit up straight again. The other started getting up.

“I—uh, I’m going to the bathroom,” Jesse said in a low voice. “If you want…”

Jesse tilted his head ever so slightly and then was off already. Shintaro looked after him, perplexed. Then, when he turned back towards the table, he happened to meet eyes with Juri from a distance. His friend was raising his brows, like asking if everything was fine.

Shintaro gave Juri a quick smile and a nod, then gulped down the rest of his beer to calm his nerves. Or to get the last bit of boldness. He hesitated for a couple of seconds more before getting up and following Jesse’s tracks to the far corner of the izakaya where the bathrooms were.

Only the other door was locked. Shintaro stood behind it for a moment, his heart hammering against his ribcase. Then, before his courage could fail him, he knocked quickly. The door opened in an instant, and the widest grin spread on Jesse’s face when he peeked out.

“I almost thought you wouldn’t come,” Jesse said.

“I thought so too for a moment,” Shintaro admitted.

He took a step closer and let Jesse pull him in. The lock turned and Shintaro leaned against the door, wrapping his arms around Jesse’s neck as Jesse claimed his lips in a hungry kiss. Jesse’s kisses were as bold as the rest of him, stealing Shintaro’s breath away. He moaned maddeningly when Shintaro tilted his head and sank his fingers into Jesse’s hair.

Right then, Shintaro’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He ignored it.

It buzzed again. And again.

“Shit, sorry, wait a second…” Shintaro detangled his right arm from around Jesse so he could fish the phone from his pocket. The messages were, unsurprisingly, from Juri.

Where are you??
Helloo??
We’re going to leave for the karaoke soon

Jesse read the messages from the screen, too. “Aw, you’re going? Just when we were getting started…”

Shintaro glanced up at him. “You sound like you have an idea?”

Jesse smiled wickedly and pecked his lips. “I live nearby.”

Shintaro quickly typed Juri a message, put his phone away and pulled Jesse in for another kiss.

sry i’m not coming after all

Omg i didn't know i needed this but I NEEDED THIS! Shintaro is totally awesome here, and I loved how Jesse was so much himself as well! And the fic as a whole — it's like you gathered all the best headcanons together and I LOVE it! ❤️ Also idk you always write well but somehow the sentences and the pace in this one had a really, really nice flow?? It's hard to grasp what it is but it was very comfortable to read!

I giggled at Jesse joining Shintaro because of COURSE he would want to get to know EVERYONE around the table! Poor shintaro darling though, thinking he'd have to speak english XDDD

“Oh, okay! That explains.”

“Explains what?”

“Why Kochi didn’t know you.”

Meaning Jesse already has already been asking Kochi about Shintaro 😌😌😌

Ahahah i LAUGHED ALOUD at Juri's confusion when he came back and found Shintaro and Jesse already making friends XDD and Jesse just SENT HIM AWAY omggg like please go now I'm getting to know your cool friend. XD

Awww how shintaro enjoys being able to properly DRINK with someone! 😆❤️❤️❤️ And oh dear how hot it suddenly is when Jesse is very very close and damnnnn how smooth he also was, asking Shintaro to join him.

Juri darling, Shintaro must only have been gone for like a minute before he's already spamming Shintaro's phone. 😂

Aaaand thank you for an easy-to-use last sentence too! 😎😆

THANK YOU, this world needed this fic. Be the change etc.

OMG I'm soooo happy that you finally wrote the beginning for this fic because IT'S AWESOME and we need more Suezu!!!!!🥰 But I definitely didn't guess that you'd write it now, so it was such a nice surprise!!!!😌

I LOVE the idea that Shintaro hangs around with Juri's company because I could sooooo see myself doing the same as an extrovert person XD! And LOLLLL even the first sentence was awesome with “Both. Both’s good.” I can see the meme in my head lmaooo!

This was just written really really nicely — a reader can TELL that you as a writer have been part of such parties before! XD Ahhhh I just love when there's such nice realism in writing, makes it so so so real and I can imagine myself in the middle of all that! Juri is such an awesome character here as well :D

OFC SHINTARO IS A TEACHER YES😌😌😌😌!!!!

The description of Jesse was A++++ and it's just so... ON POINT🥰 You know this but I just enjoy so much when characters aren't ooc and they are just SO THEMSELVES. I cracked up at Jesse's AHAHAHA laugh mentioned because omggggg I can ___hear it in my head XD AND THEN WHEN THEY GET ALONG SO WELL FROM THE VERY START and Shintaro is sooooo excited to have a good drinking buddy LMAO MOOD AGAIN XDDDD!!! And OMG THEIR BAD JOKING AND THOSE BAD PUNS LOOOOLLLL that was so funny!!! How do you come up with such funny stuff really??? I also like little details such as Jesse's difficulties with dealing kanji awww bless him :'')

AND THEN THE MOOD CHANGES AND 👀👀👀👀👀!!!! I knew that I needed this fic and I needed MORE of this pairing but holy shit that was still so surprisingly hot!!!! Can't blame Shintaro btw, Jesse _IS so hot oh yeeees!!!

THE BATHROOM SCENE OMGGGGG THE KISSING HOLYYYYY😍😍😍😍😍😍 YES I'M VERY MUCH INTO THIS THANK YOU VERY MUCH. BTW, THIS SCENE was __especially hot idek why:

“I almost thought you wouldn’t come,” Jesse said.“I thought so too for a moment,” Shintaro admitted.

SO MUCH TENSION AND THEN AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Too bad Juri interrupts them with his messages lmaooo XD

The kiss must have been really really good because Shintaro ends up skipping karaoke lmaoooo! NOW I REALLY WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT THEIR SEX AT JESSE'S PLACE BECAUSE AAAAAAAAAAA. Honestly, I'm still a little bit surprised how hot this pairing can be... even though they won't be an endgame, I don't caaaare! Their sex can still be such a good experience!🥰

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚

BE THE CHANGE ETC. XD
