Watching Nikaido had become a habit of Yokoo whenever the two of them happened to be in the same room. He usually scrutinized and judged him, shaking his head disappointed whenever Nikaido and Senga teamed up during their free time, and nudged them when their time was not so free anymore and they had to get ready for a photo shot or rehearsals but they were still messing around.
At first, he felt like it was his duty to watch over the younger ones. He was the responsible guy in Kisumai, and he himself would have never trusted Kitayama or Fujigaya to properly scold the youngers when they were wasting time or when they were going too far with their silly behavior, so he felt entitled to just do it himself. Nobody ever had any objection.
But the more he observed Nisen playing and laughing with all their might every single day, the more he wished he could join them instead of just showing disapproval.
Soon enough he realized he couldn’t take his eyes off Nikaido.
His smile was contagious too and he felt the sides of his lips bending up automatically every time that silly grin formed on Nikaido’s face. Nikaido must have noticed that too, but every time Yokoo looked at him, Nikaido turned pale and the smile faded from his lips immediately, maybe he was thinking that he was about to be scolded for something.
One day a member of the staff called them. Yokoo had no idea why just he and Nikaido were summoned, but he noticed Nikaido’s worried face. Staff-san had them sit in a room and wait for him while he was called for an emergency.
Yokoo saw Nikaido growing impatient and starting to tap his foot on the floor causing the table to shake with the movement of his knee.
“Would you stop that?”
Nikaido was startled. “S-sorry...”
After less than a minute Nikaido started fiddling with a pen on the table. Yokoo sighed.
“What are you so nervous about anyway?”
Nikaido, who had tried to avoid any eye contact before that moment, turned to Wataru and gave him another worried look.
“I am not sure what I did Yokoo-san, but whatever it is, I’m sorry! There is no need to call the staff to scold me! I swear I won’t do it again!”
Yokoo’s expression must have looked as puzzled as that of Hasshi trying to figure out how to solve a complicated maths problem. “What are you talking about?”
“Didn’t you call the staff-san to tell me I did something wrong?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“So he’s not going to scold me? You are not going to scold me?” asked Nikaido anxiously.
“I have no idea why the staff called us here, but I am not going to scold you and I never asked anyone to scold you for me.”
Nikaido didn’t even have the time to sigh in relief, that Yokoo continued. “Because you know, I really enjoy scolding you myself.”
Nikaido’s expression was appalled as he sunk on the chair. “What!!! That’s really mean Yokoo-san! Why don’t you like me?!”
Yokoo couldn’t suppress a chortle, but before he could say something in reply the staff-san decided to finally come back to the room and let them know why they were there. After Nikaido made clear once again with the man that he was not there to scold them, the staff-san announced they were going to star in a butai. Together.
After the man left, they looked at each other. Yokoo could see Nikaido’s excitement all over his face and he guessed he must have looked pretty enthusiastic too.
“Finally! We finally get some work!” blurted out Nikaido jumping up from the chair.
Yokoo nodded, he was overwhelmed by the news, but also by Nikaido’s blasting cheerfulness. He was delighted to see him like that, and he was glad to be the only one to share this moment with him. After all the time spent watching him having fun, they could finally have fun together.
“But... if it’s with Yokoo-san I’m a bit worried. Lately you’ve been so harsh with me. I guess you don’t like the way I am.”
Yokoo sulked and leaned towards Nikaido who backed out a bit but was stopped by the wall behind him. “Now don’t be angry please!” Pleaded the younger.
“It's a bit too much saying I don’t like you just because I ask you to behave. I can’t believe it!”
Nikaido pouted. “Sorry... but lately you were just looking at me and never really said anything... so I was worried you lost hopes with me.”
“It’s not like I had much hope to start with. But I don’t want to change you. I just want you to do what you’re asked. I actually like you a lot.”
“Really?” Nikaido asked surprised to Wataru who was breathing not many inches away from his face. Sometimes Yokoo had issues understanding just how much he could get close to people without invading their personal space. But Nikaido didn’t look to be bothered by it.
“And it seems like we’ll have more time to be together soon.” Yokoo smiled tilting his head to the side. “This means I will have more opportunities to scold you. There’s nowhere you can escape!”
