[Team 1] Not in Kansas

So! Hugest apologies for vanishing like that, I swear my technology is out to get me. But we've declared a truce! 8D Yay. Anyway, it's good to be back and writing again. Fic is... vaguely something about MirrorMask and the Wizard of Oz plus body/image issues, but eh.

“Try again another day!” Kitayama said, and nearly slammed the door in Fujigaya’s face.

“Wait!” Fujigaya pounded his fist on the door. “Hold on, I don’t have another day, I’ve got to get home!”

The door flew open again, and Kitayama regarded him with a thoughtful expression. “Then why aren’t you already home?”

If Fujigaya didn’t think Kitayama could help him return home, he would have strangled him right on the spot. But Kimura’s instructions had been perfectly spot on and he’d promised that Kitayama could return Fujigaya back to where he belonged.

(He hadn’t told Fujigaya that Kitayama was such an annoying ass.)

But now Kitayama was actually taking him seriously, eyeing him with restrained interest. “But do you really want to?”

“What?”

“Go home,” Kitayama said.

Fujigaya stared at him. “I’ve had to walk through a library of dead things, fool a sphynx, and climb through a delusion to get here. Do you really think I’d have done it if I didn’t want to go home?” His patience was fraying quickly. He had been punched, twisted, and pulled inside out. He missed his family, his dog, his friends, even his little brothers. There was nothing else he wanted more than to go home.

But Kitayama was unconvinced. His gaze was steady, piercing, as if trying to draw truth from Fujigaya (but he was already telling the truth, he wanted to go home, he wanted to go home now, it was the truth, it really was.)

Finally Kitayama shook his head, stepping back to allow Fujigaya inside. “You know how to go home already,” he said, nodding towards something in the next room. “And you’ve known for some time... So why won’t you?”

Fujigaya froze, halfway through the door. The perfectly smooth surface of a mirror was just barely visible.

He had been denying it, through the Library and the Labyrinth, and even at Kimura’s palace. The voices, just barely audible, calling him from the mirror.

“I can’t,” he whispered, staring at the mirror’s edge.

“Then you can’t go home,” Kitayama said with finality, before softening. “What are you so afraid of seeing? You’re no monster or madman.”

Myself. Fujigaya couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud, but that fear was pounding in his bloodstream as Kitayama approached the mirror, leaving him by the door.

No monster, no madman. Just me

But the voices called him home and he wanted, oh, how he wanted to go home.

“You can’t stay here like this either,” Kitayama said, waiting by the mirror. “This one foot in, one wish out thing... that’ll kill you here.”

They stood there for what felt like an eternity, Fujigaya’s stomach twisting as he looked from Kitayama to the mirror. He didn’t want to stay. Not here, not forever. It had been cool at first, funny and new and interesting, but then Fujigaya had drifted a little too close to Death for his liking.

Home, the voices called to him.

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and stepped foward.
