[Team 1] The Cream on the Cake, and the Cherry on Top
I'M--- not late, I don't think u_u
SO this wasn't what I was planning to write, but I shall write Miyata watching UtaPri for another time because apparently "May the best idol win" was not a line from UtaPri2 u_u Oh well! MORE YARA FIC FOR EVERYONE \O/
This also doubles as a partial thank you present for
yararanger.
Win or lose, Yara knew that he had tried his best in this competition, and that there was very little else that he could do now. He had made it to the Nationals, he'd recently started dating Ryoko (whose cheers – loud and very, very encouraging – he had heard in the stands), and their dance group had recently been scouted to dance for a show.
Of course he would love to win – it would be the cherry on top – but he knew that even without this victory, he would have no regrets.
Still, he can't help but wonder if there was more he could have done to make his routine more inspiring, more breath-taking, more. He had spent days agonising each move, each step: did this leap fit in here? Did that spin flow with the rest of the routine?
Everyone – absolutely everyone that he could think of – had taken time out of extra classes and practices to help him put it together; Ryoko had even turned up late once so she could stop by Yara's apartment to pick Chura up and bring her with. Winning would mean the world to him, as a way of thanking all of the people who had helped him along the way.
There were only moments now until the announcement of the victor, and the tension in the air was palpable, almost tangible. As the main sponsor continued to talk and congratulate everyone for their excellent dances, Yara felt his fist slowly clench tighter and tighter, the knot in his stomach twisting.
At last, when the sponsor stepped away from the microphone and the announcer took his place, Yara knew the time everyone had been waiting for had arrived.
"As Kondo-san said, this year's competition has raised the bar and all of the routines were more spectacular than before. All but one of the awards have been presented in an earlier ceremony, but there is one more, final prize. Alas, there can only be one person who takes home the award for Overall Best tonight, along with the prize money of ¥100,000, and that person is…"
The drumroll seemed to never end.
Suddenly, the screen of the sports stadium flashed. Words appeared followed by an explosion of golden streamers from the ceiling, momentarily covering the screen. Yara didn't hear the name that was announced either, so deafening were the cheers that erupted around the stadium.
He did, however, feel the push from behind as the people around him nudged him towards the stage, their smiles bright and palms red from clapping.
"Well done," he heard being said all around him. "Congratulations!"
He accepted the plaque and envelope in a haze, but whilst he was on stage, having his photograph taken, he chanced a glance up to the stand. The first thing he saw was Ryoko beaming down at him, tears streaming down her face as she cheered and clapped for him, and the sight etched itself into the back of his eyelids and made his heart skip a beat.
It was the last thing he saw that night – and what a glorious sight it was to drift to sleep.
