"… out of place," she heard one of the advisors whisper to their neighbour as she walked past, her head held high as though the presence of the Queen in the Council room was an ordinary occurrence. "This is unseemly."
His neighbour hummed a quiet agreement, but the sound lasted no more than a fraction of a second because suddenly there was movement in the row in front of them and one of the King's senior advisors - and a staunch supporter of the Queen - shot them both an icy look.
Queen Ryoko made no move to acknowledge any of this, though, as she steadily proceeded down the length of the hall, her Mistress of the Robes following closely behind. In contrast to the Queen Consort, Lady Shoko's eyes were trained on the carpeted floor beneath their feet, her gloved hands clasped before her.
The two ladies stopped when they were just over an arm's length away from the platform that held the King's ornate seat, from where the King was gazing down at them quizzically. The Queen's eyes met the King's briefly before she, too, lowered her head, sinking down into a curtsy that her Mistress of the Robes quickly copied.
He stood up, causing a flurry of movements in the stands along the wall, and whispered a few, quick instructions to his Secretary. When Secretary Koshioka nodded his understanding, the King clapped his hand on his trusted servant's shoulder and proceeded to make his way down the platform.
Ryoko made no move to rise even when Tomoyuki was stood before her, a hand under her chin.
"What is it, my Queen?" he asked quietly, leaning forward to peer at her face.
"I have received a letter," was the even quieter reply, and that was when Tomoyuki noticed how her hand trembled slightly, fingers curled into the soft fabric of her dress. "I---"
He glanced over her shoulder at Lady Shoko, who shook her head imperceptibly, eyes darting to the rows of Royal advisors around them. With a small nod, he gently pulled her upright and, with the help of her Mistress of the Robes, led her into the antechamber. As the wooden door was closed behind them by an attendant, he heard Secretary Koshioka announce that the meeting would be adjourned until further notice. |
