[Team Two] Lost Soul

Again the bell sounded. Shaking the water out of his wings, Hokuto stepped into the temple.

“Demons are not allowed in here,” Kento said without turning around. For a human, the priest had surprisingly good instincts.

“It's raining.” Hokuto stepped closer. “I was cold. You could warm me up.”

Ignoring Hokuto, Kento kept lighting the candles around the altar.

Hokuto leaned against a stone pillar and watched for a while. When it became clear that Kento wasn't going to talk, he asked, “Did Fuma tell you how he fell?”

“I didn't ask.”

“A curious lack of curiosity.” Hokuto draped his arm over Kento's shoulders to whisper into his ear. “Or are you afraid of what you'll find out?”

Ducking out from under Hokuto's arm, Kento replied, “Aren't you afraid of the other priests catching you?”

“All they'll do is send me back to Hell,” Hokuto replied. “None of them are strong enough to banish me for longer than a day, let alone hurt me.” Hokuto grinned, his fangs reflecting the candle light. “How sweet. You're worried for me.”

Kento finally turned around to confront the demon. “What do you want, Hokuto? I'm not in the mood for games.”

Spreading his wings to block out most of the light, Hokuto stepped closer, backing Kento into the corner. “Ask. Ask me how Fuma fell. You want to know, I can smell your curiosity.”

Kento shook his head, refusing to ask. “He told me he fell a thousand years ago. It hardly matters now.”

“He had a friend, another angel.” Hokuto's eyes glowed red in the dim light. “Fuma stuck a knife in his chest. Ate his heart and drank his blood. But he didn't eat his soul.”

Hokuto leaned in closer to stare right into Kento's wide eyes, watched the tears well up slowly. So many delicious emotions. “Do you know why? Every time his friend was reborn as a human, Fuma would find him. Find him, seduce him and finally eat him. He's been doing it for a thousand years.”

“Why'd you tell me?” Kento asked, ineffectually wiping at the tears on his cheeks with the back of his hand.

“Your pain is so sweet.” Hokuto made a show of licking up one of Kento's tears. “Denial makes a delicious flavouring.”

Hokuto turned and walked away. When he reached the door, Kento spoke again, “And you? How did you fall? Tell me, Hokuto.”

“Ask Fuma,” Hokuto replied, letting the door fall shut behind him. He hadn't lied to Kento, Kento would have sensed a lie, but he hadn't quite told the whole truth either. Stepping out into the moonless night, the demon spread his dark wings.
