Also I probably rather unintentionally gave Ryota a tragic backstory in Magicverse, ooPS?
You might not be the same as everyone else, his mother's quiet voice echoes in the back of his mind as his fevered mind casts him back to his childhood, but it doesn't mean I love you any less. You'll always be my precious baby boy, Ryo-chan.
He feels the warmth of familiar arms wrap around him, but his mind's too muddled - he can't tell who those arms belong to. And the effort to sort through the thoughts are only adding to the muddle in his mind.
The fingers running through his hair are soothing though.
Then he hears a scream, and he jerks, his head snapping round in the direction of the scream. Instantly, the temperature spikes and he feels hot all over, the red of flames dancing in the edge of his vision.
His room - his house - everything - is on fire.
Run, Ryota, his mother's voice screams from outside his childhood bedroom. Go. Run. Don't let them catch you.
He's stuck, his feet leaden and glued to the floor, but his mother is crying for him to leave, to protect himself so with a great effort, he manages to stumble backwards.
An arm wraps around his waist and reels him back, pulling him out through the broken window and onto the pavement below.
We have to go, Yara's voice murmurs, but you'll be okay, Ryo-chan, hang in there."
Ryota's eyes fly open and at first, he can't see a thing. He blinks a few times, clearing away the fog, and he sees Yara peering down at him with a kindly smile to mask the concern lining his brows, the corners of his eyes. There's an arm around his shoulder, cradling him to the older man's chest; Yara's other hand is untangling the sweaty knots in his hair.
"Welcome back, little one," Yara greets softly.
