[team three] book adventures

oh look i can write!! what a shocker. this is actually not any fandom related?? oops. it's something [livejournal.com profile] jojibear and i are "working on". (i use the phrase loosely, it's a paused, huge work in progress.) but it was an idea i had for a possible scene. :3 everything is original and fictional and super super out of this world, but you don't need any back ground info to follow this really.

The dogpile of children giggle as Enabella drags Seth through the entrance of the hole in the wall bookstore. They were currently visiting Fey, the endlessly green, leaf shaped island-country, and Enabella was nearly bouncing off the walls form the moment they got there. Seth is mostly to blame for that, telling her tales of his first visit to Fey, his encounter, the things he learned. She couldn't contain her excitement.

Seth lets out a soft laugh, allowing Enabella to pull on his arm, the skin of his wrist, warm and sticky under her hand thanks to the humid air. "You won't be able to understand most of these," he says. "Unless, that is, you've learned their ancient language before?"

Enabella stops short, making Seth run into her. "Oh," she says slowly. "Right, languages are a thing." She frowns just a bit, considering her options. Enabella was never good with languages in school growing up, Spirit's abilities aside.

Wait.

No, the quiet, but strong voice told her. No, I will not help you.

Enabella scoffs, rolling her eye's at her spirit. It would choose now to be stubborn. "Don't be a sourpuss," she tells it, keeping her voice low. She hates talking directly to her spirit, but most of all in public places. While it's a generally common, and encouraged thing, Enabella finds it odd, and silly. She feels as if she's talking to herself most times, so keeps her comments to her self, or very internal. Her spirit knows she's directing them at it anyway.

No, it says again.

"But learning!" Enabella says, a bit loudly, gaining the attention of the older couple she and Seth pass. She smiles at them weakly, and hurries along. "Fine, be that way," she grumbles to her spirit.

"Let's find you a translation dictionary," Seth suggests, using Enabella's hold on him to direct them in another direction. "You'll be fine."

The dictionary does her very little help, confusing her more than she normally would be to the point her spirit shouts, fine! rather obnoxiously in her head. I can't watch this anymore. Enabella smiles triumphantly, closing the dictionary and placing it back on the shelf. She doesn't say, "I knew you'd give in," but by how huffy her spirit seems to be, she thinks it very loudly.

Everything is a blur after that, Enabella finding book after book that catches her eye. She never liked school, but she's always enjoyed learning new things at her own pace, and the things that these books offer her are exciting. She gets so lost in them that she looses sight of Seth at one point, only to be brought back to earth when she nearly walks into him.

"There you are!" Seth says, his face filled with worry. "Don't disappear like that, please."

Enabella's eyebrows knit together in confusion. "What?"

"I've been looking for you for the past hour!"

"It hasn't been an hour," she says slowly. "Has it?"

"Longer," he replies.

Her frown deepens. "I see," she says carefully, looking back down at the book of Fey fairy tales in her hands. "I was distracted."

She can hear Seth, and her spirit, roll their eyes. Or, she's sure her spirit would if it had eyes. "Clearly." He takes the book out of her hands and flips through it a bit. "We have a copy of this back home," he says once he's done, handing it back to her. "An older copy."

"Have you read it?"

He hums. "Yes, when I was in school."

Enabella smirks. "Must've been a long time ago then. Do you even remember any of it."

Seth shakes his head, but smiles anyway. "Yes, Bells. I remember. I'm not that old."

"Old enough."

Seth looks at her with an unreadable expression before leading her to another part of the store. "It's a good book, useful, in a sense. You should get it."

Enabella looks down at the cover. "I don't know, I don't really have room for it."

"I can carry it for you, since you've deemed me as your tour guild for all things and places," he offers. "I have shockingly less items than you."

She opens her mouth to protest, but Seth is already taking the book from her and handing it over to the store's lone cashier, along with a few gems.

"You didn't have to do that," she says once they're outside again. The dogpile of children is gone along with the bright, hot sun from earlier. The sky is now a deep swirl of blues and purples with a scattering of sparkling dots. "I could've paid for it."

Seth shrugs, handing the book back to her. "You were second guessing it," he says, removing his glasses to clean them off as well as wipe his face with the edge of his shirt. Now that Enabella things about it, she can feel the sweat on his skin. The bookstore might have been a magical place, but it was extrememly hot. "You can easily pay me back."

She nods slowly, looking back down at the book. "Sure."
