[Team Three] Overrated
Kicking off Team 3 with... a not-great attempt at kidfic;; I tried,
turtleheartz. >__<"
Anyway hiii, I'm Sheryl. I can be contacted either here or on twitter - please feel free to give me a shout!
Yamada has been surrounded by girls from the moment he was born. In the hospital room before him were his mother, a midwife, another midwife, and an assistant. Then his father was allowed to bring a little Chihiro inside with him, making that a total of five girls against the two of them. Yamada’s dad likes to tell everyone that he gave baby Yamada a little fist pump that evening, as a celebration of their solidarity. Yamada thinks that was awfully nice of him.
After him comes Misaki, then after that they get a girl puppy, and that makes four girls in the Yamada household. So when he goes to school he’s not particularly interested in any of them, even though his mother says it’s not nice to choose friends based on gender. Yamada tries to explain that he doesn’t - it’s not his fault girls wrinkle their noses at the mention of soccer. If there’s one passion Yamada has in in life, it’s soccer. Soccer is much better than any girl.
Except for Misaki. She’s cute, laughs at his jokes and follows him around everywhere. Yamada likes that. For the next seven years, Misaki is the only girl he has eyes for.
That is, until he sees her on the first day of third grade.
---
Yuto started calling him Yama-chan on the second day of elementary school, after they bonded over their mutual appreciation of crayons and Yuto didn’t try to steal Yamada’s favourite, the red one. He even openly admired Yamada’s drawing of a strawberry, and that’s when Yamada knew they could be friends. When Yuto is angry, or just having A Very Bad Day, Yama-chan turns into Chan-yama. Yamada privately thinks Yuto is a little weird, but he keeps his mouth shut because Chihiro wanted to take Yuto home when she first laid eyes on him and he’s not sure whether that means she wants them to swap places. Yamada likes Yuto, but not so much so that he wants to find out.
Every day in school, Yuto tells Yamada how bugs are more fascinating than humans. Slowly Yamada became a convert too, and occasionally Yuto invites him to go bug catching on the weekends. Yamada only goes when he doesn’t have soccer practice. One afternoon, Yuto introduces him to his brother Raiya, whom he likes to talk about even more than bugs. Raiya is cute, and apparently he laughs at all of Yuto’s jokes and follows him around everywhere. It seems as though Yuto only has eyes for Raiya.
That is, until Yuto sees her on the first day of third grade.
---
She’s new. Her eyes sparkle all the time, and when she smiles Yamada’s heart melts even more than it does when Misaki smiles. Maybe it’s because she’s missing a few teeth, but Chihiro didn’t look that cute when her teeth fell out. Sometimes he wishes it was her who asked him to play with her, rather than Misaki, and that makes him feel like a horrible older brother. Briefly, he wonders if it’s because Misaki hasn’t lost any teeth yet, but when he asks his mother just shakes her head and covers her mouth with her hand.
Yamada’s sad that he doesn’t get to sit next to her in class. He’s in the row behind her though, and when not glaring holes into the back of the blond head of the transfer student, Anthony, Yamada becomes entranced by the way her long, silky ponytail bounces whenever she shifts in her seat.
He’s too nervous to talk to her, so watching is all he does.
Yamada doesn’t understand this - he’s lived with girls all his life, so why is it so difficult for him to talk to a different one? He can’t even say “thank you” properly when she distributes the tests out to the class. His mother says he should always say “thank you” to people.
Two and a half terms of third grade passes, and still Yamada remains as enamoured as the first day of the year. Yamada’s spoken a few more words to her since school first started, but not much more.
He hopes that will change next week. Valentine’s Day is next week.
Yamada feels as though he has a chance – she’s gone to him in search for a sharpener three times, now, not that Yamada’s been counting.
He’s daydreaming about what he’ll say when he does get chocolates when a pink stick is waved enthusiastically in front of his face.
“Yama-chan, you want some?” Yuto asks, sitting down next to him, having dragged his chair and desk over from three spots away. “I have strawberry today.”
“Do you think you’ll get chocolate tomorrow?” Yamada blurts out, startling his friend. The stick is still in front of Yamada’s face, but he can’t think about eating right now.
Yuto regards him quietly for a moment before breaking into a wide grin and nodding. Yuto has three missing teeth, Yamada notes; one less than he has. “I hope so. What about you, Yama-chan?”
Taking a quick check to make sure nobody’s paying attention to them, Yamada leans over and whispers a name in Yuto’s ear. When he settles back in his seat, Yuto’s smile has vanished, and Yuto’s slowly withdrawing the proffered pocky stick.
“I don’t like you anymore, Chan-yama,” Yuto declares, standing up and pouting. He takes his chair and desk, and flounces off to sit with Anthony.
They don’t talk to each other for the rest of the day.
---
Yamada gets chocolate from every girl in the class, and from some of his teachers. So does Yuto.
Because they’ve been friends for so long, Yamada forgets he’s not supposed to be talking to Yuto. Evidently, so does Yuto – they gravitate towards each other on accident when it’s time to go home.
They’ve made it out of the school building when Yamada perks up at the sound of a familiar voice. Curious, both he and Yuto poke their heads around the corner.
“Please accept this, Chinen-kun!”
“Thank you!”
”Traitor”, Yamada thinks. See if he’ll ever lend his silver sharpener again.
Yamada turns back to glance at Yuto, who’s scuffing the toe with his foot and not looking at Yamada.
Girls are overrated, anyway.
“Let’s go home, Yuto,” Yamada says, smiling a bit when Yuto brightens.
He’s wordlessly offered another strawberry pocky, and this time he accepts gratefully.
daydreamar is skipping this round so it's your turn,
snow! Happy shiritori-ing!
