[team four] on shori's (presumed) insomnia

umm hi everyone. i want to apologize for the format of this because... it's a lot of text messages which i don't really considering writing (.w.)

more shori fic o/ it has a brief ending because i got distracted and wasn't sure that this was going anywhere. anyway, enjoy some introspective fluff

His virginity has been a hot topic of debate recently; there is no way to skirt around the issue. Shori himself doesn’t think much of it—there are more important things in his life, like work, trivia, scale models of cars and of course, mastering English. But it’s like everyone else around him only wants to know whether or not he is still a virgin. Being asked about pornography, sex, and related subjects; Shori guesses that it’s due to his recent coming-of-age that they are asking such intrusive questions, though, by the way some of them talk about it, he has a suspicion that perhaps this is not the first time that they have had such thoughts.

If Shori had to think about it, if he had to spend time thinking about virginity and sex and the like, well, there was always only one person that his mind ever would end up thinking about. And that person was always Kento. But to any onlooker, this would be quite obvious. His vies for attention from Kento were pretty much extreme. But luckily enough for Shori, in general, Kento would be the kind to respond to these pleas right away. And curiously enough, it seemed that recently, Kento was one of the more interested parties when it came to the status of Shori’s virginity. Still, it wasn’t something that Shori actively thought about. Just occasionally, when falling asleep at night, he would be lonely, and whenever those kinds of thoughts crept into his mind, he would always want Kento by his side.

Of course, the chances he actually got to be that close to Kento were few and far between. But he did love the chances that he got, cherished them. Thinking rationally about it, maybe he did have stronger feelings than friendship for Kento, but there was no reason to analyze it. At least, there wasn’t any reason to analyze it before. Even if he did hypothetically have such feelings, they were feelings that he would be forbidden to act upon. Right?

Tonight is another sleepless night, Shori is restless with so many thoughts running through his mind, and in times like this, it’s not uncommon for him to pull out his phone and text a few people. Those few people usually being Kento or no one at all. When Shori’s lonely, it’s Kento he needs. Or at least, that’s his thought process.

SMS ➤
kentokun (´・ω・`)
a-h! it’s shori! … and at this hour?

sorry, maybe you’re busy?
if that’s it, don’t let me bother you笑
iya, if it’s shori, i have some time.
what did you need?

can’t seem to sleep.
so it’s like that...
do you need a bedtime story?(・ω<)

爆笑 i think i’m a little too old for that.
i’m 18, not 8.
well…
it’s true(* ̄ ̄ー ̄ ̄)
most eighteen year olds will relax in another way, heh

That text causes Shori to put his phone down for a bit. Of course, he’s not stupid, he knows what it means. But he’s almost certain that there was no reason for Kento to have said something like that. As he overanalyzes it, his cheeks begin to tint a deep pink.

SMS ➤
well
you know kentokun
i’m not like most eighteen year olds.
that’s certainly true. shori is special!

This certainly doesn’t help things. Shori frowns a little bit, ignoring his phone when it vibrates again, instead turning over in his futon, head buried in his pillow. Just because he was eighteen, he had to think about things like this? He wondered if it wasn’t because of everyone coming up to him and asking him about it lately. He frowns as the cogs in his brain continue to churn, but only leaving him coming up with no answers at all. Perhaps any other night he would have just ignored things, let them be, but by chance, tonight was different.

SMS ➤
so of course he would be different from the rest of them.

kentokun…
hm?

His response comes so quickly that Shori’s heart flutters. It’s far from the first time that such a thing has happened, but whenever it does occur, he’s always at least a little taken aback by it.

SMS ➤
um
um it’s nothing
you’re lying to me, aren’t you? sho-rikun?

Well, it’s true. He’s lying. Shori frowns at how easily he was figured out as he scrawls the next message.

SMS ➤
can i call you?
mn…
well, i guess it’s okay.

you guess?
笑 don’t worry about it, just call me, okay?

Kento’s texts are at least a little reassuring. Shori moves to press the phone button, deciding to use LINE’s call function since it’s much better than using up his own phone bill. Not that either of these things were much of an issue… not that it mattered to him at all at this time of night. He waits until he hears the receiver pick up before he breathes a shallow, whispery, “Hi… Kentokun,” in the phone, turning onto his back once more and staring up at the ceiling.

“Hey,” comes the voice on the other end of the line, and Shori feels his heart do all kinds of things that he’s not used to yet again, “What’s up?” His voice has a softness to it when he speaks. It isn’t something that Shori has never heard before, but it’s also something he doesn’t hear often. It soothes him a bit, and his lips form a tiny smile.

“I just got lonely, is all,” Shori says. He laughs just a bit, as it takes a little bit of his stress away. Not much, but just enough so that he continue, “You’re probably busy or something, anyway…”

“No, I told you already, I’m not,” Kento responds, more serious in tone than before, “But… it’s cute that you’re calling me just because you’re lonely.”

Cute… that word again. Shori makes the tiniest noise when he hears that, trying to mask it by laughing again.

“Cute? If you ask me, it seemed kind of pathetic…”

“It’s not pathetic, Shori,” Kento assures the younger male, and surprisingly, those words relax him just a bit. Enough to make him yawn, at least.

“Well… if you say so,” he accepts, sighing a bit as he turns onto his side, “If it wasn’t so late, I’d ask if I could come over… I want to sleep together again…”

“Since it’s so late… well… maybe I’ll just have to make up for that even though I’m not there. It’s okay if you fall asleep while talking to me, Shori. I’ll only be a little sad.”

And of course, making Kento sad was not something that Shori wanted to do in any way, shape or form. So he’s left feeling conflicted. Maybe that’s just what Kento wanted, though.

“Then…” he starts, but finds that he’s at a loss for words. Or perhaps, more than being at a loss for words, he’s afraid to say just what he’s thinking of. Kento interuppts him anyway.

“Why don’t we arrange a date?”

Despite how casually the words came out, Shori can’t help the way that his heart leaps in his chest and he’s left staring wide-eyed into his dark room. A date? Did he mean a date date? Or just a friend date? Whatever kind of date it was going to be, Shori decides, response in his usual whispery tone, “A date? O-okay, then, let’s arrange a date.”
