[team three] Magic

OOPS I WROTE MIKIRA because the scriptwriters didn't

WARNING: Spoilers for Kurofuku Monogatari

The side table lights up, Akira's cell phone screen glowing brightly in the dark, and he fumbles around for a few seconds, trying to answer it before it stops. The screen reads out Miki's name in bold letters, and Akira can't push answer fast enough. His stomach feels like it's in his throat; if Miki's in trouble, then--

"Hello? Miki-san?"

"Ahh~ I was waiting forever~"

-- Well, no trouble. Just Miki.

"Sorry, sorry! Is everything okay?"

"Akira-kun..."

"What is it?"

"It's-- I'm-- ahh, it's surprisingly difficult after all!"

"Miki-san? What's going on?"

"I'm leaving, Akira-kun. Actually... I've already left."

Miki continues to speak - Akira knows there are more words, because he can hear them, but he can't understand them. The thought of Miki really leaving... the thought of not being able to talk with her, see her smile, protect her (not that he would ever admit that last item out loud; she'd put the heel of her shoe through his eye)... it felt as though the universe was crashing to the ground. He realizes that, when he woke up to find Kyoko gone, he was still able to put one foot in front of the other; however, if Miki were to leave, he feels as though he would be absolutely crippled, and that's how Akira realizes he has made a terrible mistake.

---

Discovering Miki's whereabouts doesn't take very long, given the number of people Akira has gotten to know, and before long, he's standing before her, clutching the scrap of paper he's scrawled down information on, feeling incredibly awkward for a black suit who's usually skilled at decorum and grace.

"What are you doing here, Akira-kun?"

Miki's face is a mixture of surprise, curiosity, annoyance, and possibly hopefulness - that is, if Akira isn't just seeing what he wants to see.

"I'm here to take you home."

"Please leave me alone."

"But why? Why did you leave?"

"Do you really not know why? You can't possibly be that clueless!"

"Yes, I can be! I'm stupid! I'm really stupid!"

Akira's voice is so loud that a man passing by gives him a wide berth, as though he's afraid to get too close to someone who is drunk, crazy, or both, standing in the middle of the street, yelling about his intellectual difficulties. Fortunately, it's the middle of the night, and any memory of this sort of thing tends to dissipate with the sunrise.

"You're in love with Kyoko-san."

"I thought I was... but..."

Miki blinks at him and then turns away, but not before Akira catches a glimpse of suspiciously bright eyes.

"This is too cruel."

With that, she begins to walk away, each click on the pavement driving a nail into Akira's heart, and he runs to catch her almost without conscious thought, stopping only when he's reached her. He throws his arms around her from behind, hugs her to his chest as tightly as he can, and is barely able to choke out--

"I'm not in love with Kyoko-san."

Miki says nothing and makes no move to face him, but doesn't throw him off, either, and Akira is unsure of what she's thinking, unsure of what to do, unsure of everything, until finally, what seems like an eternity later, he feels one of Miki's hands slide up over the back of his, her fingers wrapping around his wrist.

---

When Akira brings Miki home - the right home, the one where she belongs, the one close to him - she turns just inside the door to say good night and he smiles, eyes twinkling despite the darkness.

"May the magic of the night be with you--"

He's barely able to finish the line before Miki flicks him in the forehead and goes inside, but he's powerless to keep his smile from expanding as he hears her laughter from behind the door.

lol that made me laugh. Akira really is an idiot *shakes head*

I like your version of the story way more, though. A flick on the forehead is way better than a half-hearted poke in the cheek u_u

How I wish this were the actual ending to KM instead of the poke we got. At least Akira realises who's truly important to him and what he needs to do to keep her by his side ;;
