[team one] awakening

So here's my very first post for shiritori -- I've been looking forward to it since I've been so horribly blocked the past few weeks, and a little push to get me writing again was very welcome.

Since Joji was kind enough to end on a whole word which wholly stumped me, she was also kind enough to provide a way out by enticing me to continue the dragon!Hakyeon fic she started here. Well played, [livejournal.com profile] jojibear.

That night, he dreamed of a dragon, lined in green and silver, slicing its way through the air and devouring the beast whole.

It probably wasn't the wisest thing to do, Hakyeon reflected, hours later when the human was safely tucked into his bed. It was Hakyeon's bed, seeing as he had failed to get the unconscious human to respond with anything coherent. But since Hakyeon had just spent the better part of an hour lugging the other's deadweight body over to his own apartment, he wasn't in the mood to entertain any complaints about the transportation service.

"Be glad I didn't leave you out there in the cold," Hakyeon told the lump on his bed, practicing the first of the excuses he would use when the man finally woke up, panicked and horrified at the unfamiliar surroundings. "Getting mugged would have been the least of your troubles. You could have been eaten." He thought for a while. "Or frozen to death."

Hakyeon's stomach gave an unhappy rumble. It had taken a while for him to finally stop shaking and trying to retch out the phantom parts of the monster he'd consumed. He licked his lips and frowned; he could still taste the sour unpleasantness of the beast his dragon had consumed.

One day, he promised himself, he would find a way to vanquish monsters in his dragon form without having the negative effects carry over to his human form. One day.

In the meantime, there was mouthwash.

His phone rang as he was gargling, a shrill distraction. Hakyeon spat the last of the mouthwash into the sink and fumbled to extract his phone from the pocket of his jeans. He would need to stock up on products soon.

"You activated your form, didn't you?" Wonshik's voice came through the phone without preamble. Hakyeon nearly dropped the entire device.

"What are you, psychic?"

"You know I can sense it when you transform." Wonshik switched into clinician mode. "How long did it take to transform? Was there any discomfort registered before and after the transformation? Did anyone see you?"

"Can't we do this tomorrow?" Hakyeon whined, aware that he sounded plaintive. "I just got back and I'm tired." There was nothing but silence on the other side of the line. "All right, fine." Hakyeon flung himself onto the sofa. This would take a while. "About ten point nine seconds, faster than the previous time; no discomfort unless you count a queasy stomach after that from the taste; no, I wasn't seen." He hesitated, then added, "But I did bring the human home."

"What?" Wonshik screeched. "What were you thinking?"

"That maybe I didn't want him to freeze to death in an alley?" he retorted, though now that Wonshik was grilling him about it, he felt silly. He could have called the other an ambulance; there was no need to bring him home. "Anyway, it's no big deal—I'll just tell him that I came across him lying on the road, there's no need to mention anything about—"

"Hello."

The voice didn't come from the phone. Hakyeon froze and turned around. The man was awake.
