[TEAM TWO] Here They Come

Office firewall is a thing that should not exist ugh. Sorry if this is extremely late ;u;

uhhh this is a sci-fi AU, same universe as the last one! It's basically a Pacific Rim + Agents of SHIELD AU.... among other things. In this universe, IDEN = the Jaegers/mobile suits, and it takes two people to control them. SO yeah. I've been adding to this thing so it's the only thing I can write at the moment.

//waves hand vaguely to fic!

Ryutaro’s shoulder was numb, but that was the least of his concerns at the moment. He gritted his teeth as he stared at the display screen of his IDEN at the dozen men clad in black, surrounding him and the limp form of his brother beside him.

“Where the hell are you guys?” he hissed into the wireless microphone from the communications dock that has seen better days. He tried to ignore the occasional sparks as well as the faint trail of smoke coming from the dock

“Back-up’s coming as soon as possible, calm down,” Chinen’s voice tersely replied to his ear.

“How am I supposed to calm down when we’re surrounded by a dozen ninja freak mutations?!” Ryutaro snapped, biting down a wince of pain as he tried to prod his brother awake with the arm that had his numb shoulder--a shoulder that was not so numb anymore as pain shot up through it.

“By remembering how to breathe, idiot,” Chinen replied, mirroring Ryutaro’s tone. “And remembering that no one in SHIELD will allow whatever that is that’s attacking you right now to hurt you permanently.”

“Do we know what they are yet?” he asked. He felt restless, stretching his limbs experimentally to see if he sustained any major injuries. Aside from his shoulder, he could feel the warm, telltale trickle of blood from a small cut on his forehead, but other than feeling sore and majorly pissed off, it looked like he was okay. His brother, on the other hand, was still out cold from the emergency landing they had to make. He panicked and wiped out, but thankfully Ryutaro had disconnected the both of them in time before they get lost in the dark pool of their shared painful memories.

“Ryutaro-kun? Ryutaro-kun can you hear me?” a female voice said in his ear, jostling him from his train of thought.

“Suzuka-san?” he said, trying not to let his voice shake.

“Oh thank goodness,” she said, breathing out in obvious relief. Ryutaro pressed the headphone into his ear a little harder, the fingers of his hand now shaking. “Kamiki-kun’s flying over there right now with Shida-chan, Yuto-kun and Yamada-kun, he’ll get you fixed up soon. Has Shintaro-kun responded?”

Ryutaro shook his head. “He’s still out cold, but the IDEN control system connected to him is giving me a pulse. His vitals seem to be okay,” he said, critically looking at the numbers on the control system. “He’ll snap out of it soon. Hopefully.”

“Ryutaro-kun?” a new voice said into the intercom system.

“Kamiki-kun! I don’t mean to be rude, but where the hell are you guys?!” Ryutaro said, looking worriedly at the people clad in black outside his mobile suit, slowly but completely surrounding their IDEN. He wouldn’t normally be scared against a whole crowd of seemingly defenseless humans while he was operating his IDEN, but they did manage to stop them mid-flight.

So yes, Ryutaro thinks he was qualified to feel afraid.

Scratch that, he was terrified.

“They’re not human,” Chinen said, his voice lacking its usual cocky confidence.

“What are you talking about, of course they are,” Ryutaro responded, dread pooling cold and thick at the bottom of his stomach. “At least they look like them.”

“The signals I’m getting from the IDEN receptors are telling me otherwise,” Kamiki said, and Ryutaro could hear the confusion in his voice. “It’s picking up human… and something else.”

“Don’t worry,” Ohgo’s voice said into his ear to through the intercom. Ryutaro heard the sound of rushing air before he finally, finally saw the carrier aircraft with the SHIELD logo emblazoned on its wing, a beacon of hope and his savior. Beside him, Shintaro groaned and began to stir back into the conscious world. There were so many sounds happening all at once as Yamada and Yuto fired warning shots to make the black-clad people surrounding their IDEN retreat, he almost didn’t hear Ohgo’s reassuring words.

“Don’t worry. You’ll be fine. You always will be,” she whispered, almost to herself. “You’re safe now."
