[team five] fire starting
Title from Adele's Rolling in the Deep. Based on a dm fic.
While it lasts, things are good. Things have always been good. Jongin goes to class, talks to his favourite professors, keeps Sehun from stealing his notes, smiles at the new Chinese kid.
"Hi!" he says, "I'm Zitao, but you can call me Tao."
Jongin likes Tao. He wears his heart on his sleeve, coos at puppies and babies, cries at sad movies, and laughs when he's happy. His laugh sounds like what Peter Pan was talking about when he said that fairies are born from babies' laughter.
Tao isn't the only new friend that Jongin makes. There's also Yifan, "call me Kris," a bit of an anomaly transferring in for his final year, but whatever. Life is unpredictable. Jongin knows how that is.
At first he thinks that Kris is cold, stoic, the way he rarely smiles, just flipping through more and more books as Jongin quietly skirts the table to shelve some volumes. When the shelving cart accidentally bumps into the table, Jongin wincing both because he stubbed his toe, the offended digit throbbing, but also because the force of the collision accidentally knocked over Kris' pile of reference material, he looks up, expecting to be met by a heavy glare and maybe even words, he knows how stressed the students in their final year can be.
He doesn't expect to be met with a sympathetic grin and large hands gathering up piles of books to once again stack them nearly on the table.
Jongin and Kris are friends after that, and Jongin slowly gets to see the sensitive soul hiding beneath the deceiving exterior.
"You look happy," Sehun remarks, diversionary tactics as he tries to make a wild grab for Jongin's notes, but Jongin is already two steps ahead and has them slipping into his bag by the time Sehun's fingers smack into the surface of the desk.
"I am happy," Jongin says, "I have two friends who aren't you and don't try to steal my notes instead of actually paying attention in class."
Sehun just huffs, blowing up the strands of his bangs with a sulky exhalation. "Who are these replacements?" he finally asks.
"Kris from the library and Tao from microbio." Sehun's face gives a kind of—Jongin's not sure what but it's definitely something.
"What?" Jongin doesn't want to know but he asks anyway, because it's always good to know, right?
"I heard they know each other from high school," Sehun whispers into his ear. "When they broke up, stars fell from the sky."
Jongin snorts at Sehun's obvious exaggeration, but the idea lingers.
