[TEAM THREE] ICE CREAM SHOP

This is for [livejournal.com profile] nachtegael because she left me a prompt the other day about Yamada working in an ice cream shop and also giving people "philosophical ramblings and advice on flavor choices." Thanks for the lovely prompt. I'm gonna write more of this AU later (to add SOHO), so just think of this as world-building. :D

“…keep moving towards the future. That’s really the most important thing. The future is vast and full of opportunities, but it’s also right in front of you. All you have to do is take a step forward.” Yamada nodded with determination as he finished his speech, feeling satisfied by what he’d said.

“That’s great and all, but my ice cream is melting.”

Yamada looked down and realized he was still holding the little plastic cup filled with two scoops of vanilla. A little bit of liquefied ice cream had started to pool around the edges. He scrambled to grab a blue plastic spoon before he handed it all over the counter to the customer. “Sorry Hikaru,” he apologized as he rang up the amount on the cash register. Hikaru was a regular customer so they often chatted about life and stuff whenever he came into the shop.

Hikaru took a bite of his ice cream as soon as he’d handed the money to Yamada. Exact change as always. “Don’t worry about it,” he said once his mouth was free again. “Good advice is good advice. I’ll remember what you said.”

Yamada banged the side of the register as the cash drawer got stuck. “Let me know how it goes, okay?” The drawer popped open with a loud clang and he deposited the money neatly inside.

“Will do,” Hikaru said with a smile and waved as he exited the ice cream shop.

This part of the day was always slow. Too early for the mid-afternoon rush of kids leaving school and wanting a sweet treat after a long day of class. Yamada liked these quiet moments when he had time to count up all the cups and spoons and make sure he had enough of them. He also had time to check the topping inventory and refill each container of sprinkles and candies and cookie bits. And if there was no one in the shop, no one could see him sneak a strawberry or two. Or five.

The bell attached to the door jingled as someone entered and Yamada quickly spun around so whoever it was couldn’t see the strawberry juice on his mouth. He reached for the nearest napkin and wiped the mess away. When he turned back around, he saw two of his regular customers smirking in unison. Nakajima Yuto and Okamoto Keito. Typical.

“Sneaking the strawberries again?” Yuto asked. He looked smug as he leaned against the glass shield running the length of the counter. He propped his chin up with his elbow and grinned.

“Of course not,” Yamada denied and tried to shove his strawberry-stained napkin into the trashcan as subtly as possible.

Keito tugged at Yuto’s sleeve to get him off of the glass and jokingly added, “If you don’t stop eating the merchandise, we’ll have to tell your boss about it.”

Yamada snorted. “Takaki wouldn’t care.” And that was true. Takaki Yuya was the most easygoing boss he’d ever worked for. He wasn’t strict about everything as long as Yamada tried his best to do a good job. The two of them always talked a lot whenever Takaki would come in to help clean up at closing time. Sometimes, if Yamada’s had a long busy day dealing with crazy customers, Takaki would throw some leftover strawberries into a plastic container and send it home with him.

“Well if you’re done spacing out,” Yuto said, interrupting his thoughts, “I’ve got an idea for you.”

Yuto and Keito visited the shop on most Thursday afternoons if their schedule was free enough. Keito was the quieter of the two friends, mostly just a casual bystander to Yuto’s overly enthusiastic attitude, but even he liked to tease Yamada if he had the chance. But Yuto was the one who talked and teased more. Towering over everything, he always leaned over the counter to tell Yamada his suggestion of the week. He had a different idea to improve things every time he came into the shop.

“And what’s that?” Yamada asked. He pulled out his ice cream scoopers and waited to hear Yuto’s new idea.

“Popsicles,” Yuto said and spread his arms out slowly for emphasis. He looked rather proud of the idea, which almost made Yamada feel bad for what he was about to say. Almost.

“That was your suggestion three months ago.”

Yuto’s eyes widened. “Was it?” He turned to Keito for confirmation, but the other boy was wisely pretending to read the menu of flavor options so he could say that he hadn’t been paying attention to the conversation.

“Remember? We had a whole hour long debate about the logistics of displaying popsicles with the soft serve.”

“Oh, that’s right.” Yuto tapped his hand on the glass as the memory came back to him. He left smudgy fingerprints behind and Yamada made a mental note to wipe them off as soon as he gave them their ice cream. “Well I still think it’s a good idea.”

“You really ought to put out a suggestion box just for Yuto,” Keito said with a laugh.

“I should,” Yamada agreed. “Then I could just toss all the suggestions in the trash at the end of the day.” He grinned as Yuto pouted and Keito covered his mouth and snickered. But once they’d all settled back down, Yamada asked them for their orders.

“The usual please,” Yuto said. “One scoop chocolate—”

“And one scoop cookie dough—” Yamada knew the order by heart already.

“With a dash of rainbow sprinkles—”

“And a pinch of crushed oreos—”

“A handful of M&Ms—”

“A few banana slices—”

To be healthy—”

“And drown it in—”

“Chocolate syrup—”

“And don’t forget—”

“The smiley face in the whipped cream,” Yamada concluded. “I know, I know.” He expertly topped off the weird concoction with two shots of whipped cream for the eyes and then one long one for the mouth. He flourished his hand for dramatic effect and accidentally made the smile a bit lopsided. But Yuto didn’t seem to mind at all. He gleefully reached out for his bowlful of ice cream monstrosity.

“And you, Keito?”

“Small chocolate milkshake,” he answered like usual. He was always the more sensible of the two.

Yamada went right to work, scooping out the ice cream and grabbing the rest of the ingredients for the shake. He was careful not to put too much chocolate syrup in because he’d learned that Keito didn’t really like sweet stuff very much. In fact, he was sure Keito only ordered something because he felt obligated to.

The sound of the mixer drowned out the conversation Yuto and Keito were having, but that just made it easier for Yamada to focus on his work. When everything was all mixed up, he picked the cup up and shook it slightly, making sure the shake wasn’t too runny. Once he was satisfied with the results, he put a top on it and handed it to Keito.

“Do you ever consider trying something new?” Yamada asked Yuto as he collected their money for the ice cream. The cash drawer stuck again and Yamada made a mental note to mention that to Takaki later.

“Never,” Yuto answered, but his words were muffled by all the ice cream in his mouth. “This is just too good.”

“But you might be missing out on something even better. You never know,” Yamada said. Once he’d given the two of them their change back, they settled into a booth by the wall to eat. Yamada grabbed a washcloth and began to wipe down all the tables before the school rush came in.

Or it could be completely terrible,” Yuto answered and then smirked as if he’d won the argument. Keito just quietly sipped his milkshake and watched.

Yamada shook his head and crossed his arms to show his complete disapproval. He didn’t even care that his washcloth was dripping water onto the floor. “You can’t just go through life without trying new things. What kind of experience is that?”

“Oh no,” Yuto said once he realized where this was going.

“This is your fault,” Keito whispered to Yuto and then turned in his seat so he could pretend to read the menu choices again even though he was here so often he knew everything the shop had to offer.

“…might think chocolate is the best until you realize that you can get chocolate and vanilla mixed together. Or then you can try cookies and cream and realize that’s even better than the others. And life is so much better once you take that first bite because you’ve tried something new and got to experience something different. It’s so important to try out different perspectives and broaden your horizons. There’s a whole world outside full of diverse people and you’d never even know unless you step outside your own front door.”

“Are you still talking about ice cream?” Yuto asked.

Yamada blinked. “Of course I am.” He walked back to his place behind the counter and put the washcloth in the sink. “I was just explaining why you should try different ice cream flavors sometimes.”

“Maybe next time I will… add some strawberries?”

Yamada couldn’t help but smile a little. “It’s a start.”

He left Yuto and Keito alone for a bit while he went back to making sure everything was in order. It was turning out to be a nice day at the ice cream shop, and he couldn’t wait to see who would be the next person to walk in through the door.
