[ Team Five ] Prom Queeng ( 2/3 )

Prom Queeng: In which Taemin is so hot he wins everything. OR, Taemin asks himself out to prom and Jonghyun accidentally finds love, part the second:

It didn’t seem like such a bad idea after all, allowing some of the underclassmen on the council take over a few of the sub committees. It saves Key and Heechul time they would have had to spend on administrative details, allowing them to focus on their decor plans, and Jonghyun isn’t complaining about the decrease in the workload. The closer it gets to D-Day, however, the more second thoughts Jonghyun is starting to have. And third thoughts. And fifteenth thoughts.

With prom only a week away, the refreshments still haven’t been ordered, not to mention the new voting system Tao is attempting to implement but keeps scrapping once he gets it half planned out. For the sake of his sanity, Jonghyun considers skipping out on the council meeting and going over the books alone in the library but that scheme is foiled when he bumps into Yixing in the hallway right after lunch.

“Hey! You on the way to the meeting?”

“Oh, yeah...hi!” Jonghyun waves and tries to look natural, his shoulders naturally relaxing in the warmth of Yixing’s sunny smile after a moment. Out of all the newbies on student council this year, Jonghyun has found Yixing to be a dependable, level headed dude. He cares about logistics, but doesn’t sacrifice aesthetic and emotional values on the altars of money and efficiency, either. In other words, Jonghyun rather trusts him.

“Shall we go together then?” Yixing extends his arm with a flourish, as if presenting an open doorway for an honored guest to step through first.

Jonghyun shakes his head with a laugh, but allows Yixing to drag him off to the classroom for the meeting. He would have felt guilty for skipping anyway, and at least it won’t be too insufferable if he can sit next to Yixing and pass notes to him under the table.

They hurry up the stairs, but the meeting is already underway by the time they sneak in the back door. Heechul gestures for them to take a seat as the head of the refreshments committee rises to give his progress report.

"So! I have the plans drawn up for the refreshments table!" Baekhyun smacks his notebook down on the table and Tao jumps at the loud thwack.

Kris lays an oversized hand on Tao's shoulder and pats him as if he's lazily dribbling a basketball until his co-chair of the prom committee relaxes again.

"Let's hear it," Heechul drawls, still snipping away on another one of his paper creations with a pair of cuticle scissors. He and Key have finished the basic cut out shapes to hang in the gym and have now progressed to working on 3D scherenschnitte centerpieces for the nametag and refreshment tables.

"Chanyeol helped me on this, actually." Baekhyun unfolds a cardboard screen of magazine pictures collaged into an infomercial of sorts, detailing flavors and colors of different kinds of sherbet. "So first of all my grandmother suggested we go old school, make sherbet rings to float in the punch bowls, which I am all in favor of! Like, who could say no to sherbet, really?"

"Go on!" Tao gestures enthusiastically for Baekhyun to continue but Heechul, the council president, just nods and taps his steepled fingers together.

"But! Not just any old sherbet rings--we put a modern twist on things, and voila!" Baekhyun steps back to reveal the last fold of cardboard as Tao oohs in appreciation. "And this is where Chanyeol's advice comes in..." Baekhyun points to the last set of collage pictures with his ballpoint pen. "Yeol found these cool Rilakkuma silicon molds on the Oriental Trading Company website!"

"So...! Cute...!" Kris coos. He reaches out to touch the logo of the yellow bear until Baekhyun smacks his hand away.

"Gross," Key says, speaking up for the first time. He drops the cuticle scissors to adjust his wire rimmed glasses. "But totally ironic. And the bear theme will match with our ironic tribute to the Care Bears." He gestures at the paper cut out, which depicts the aforementioned Care Bears impaling themselves on lollipops and candy canes against a backdrop of random religious symbols.

"Groovy." Heechul snaps in approval and Baekhyun beams in triumph.

"But how much are these ice cube molds going to cost us?" Jonghyun hates to be such a downer, which is one of the main reasons he still resents getting stuck as treasurer (besides the fact that numbers, eww, are just not his thing). He is responsible for the budget, however, and Jonghyun takes his role seriously with a sense of good stewardship for the funds entrusted to the committee.

"No worries! The baking club already ordered the molds for their spring bake sale, and the VP kindly offered to loan us the use of them for prom weekend." Baekhyun folds his explanatory folder back up with a flourish as everyone around the table nods in agreement. “Chanyeol is the VP of the baking club, after all, so yeah.”

"Cool, well I just have a quick update on PR stuff," Yixing says as he pulls up a document on his tablet. "Henry and i made online announcements, but we drew up a short guest list of people to send a hard copy to, like the teachers who don't check their email."

"Thanks, Xing. Could you forward the draft of the two invitation versions to all the council members?" Kris looks up from taking notes on his palm with a fine tipped sharpie like the dutiful secretary that he is.

"I already sent them out before lunch!" Yixing salutes Kris and turns to Jonghyun as the group breaks off into their respective sub committees to discuss logistics and sherbet flavors. "Hey, so who are you going with to prom this year?"

"Hm?" Jonghyun has half an eye on Yixing's attentive smile as he replies to a text. It’s a message from Jinki, something about the different prices for helium balloons at several party supply stores around town.

"Do you have a date, or...?"

"Oh, sorry, Xing! I gotta take this!" Jonghyun throws him a wave and ducks a bow to the rest of the council members as he sprints for the door, already answering his phone before he makes it to the hall. There's just never a moment to slow down and breathe when they've got a prom to plan, even if he’d like to hang out and get to know some of his juniors better.

++++++

They all get together to set up the tables and hang the decorations the night before the dance. Jonghyun isn't feeling the pressure since his duties are completed, all of the receipts accounted for and recorded in their budget book. He's grateful for the chance to just relax with their team and enjoy hanging up the streamers and colorful cut out shapes Key and Heechul made for the galaxy themed event.

Yixing is streaming a Michael Jackson station on internet radio, and Jonghyun jumps around with him to the beat as Heechul directs them in carrying out his artistic vision from the stage. Kris is checking off the to-do items listed on his palm one by one with a purple sharpie as Tao drags him around the gym by the wrist to inspect each sub committee's progress.

Tao halts in front of the refreshments table with a perplexed look. Kris slams into him a beat later, long limbs not able to catch himself from stopping short.

"Why are you hanging paper pomegranates over here? The punch is citrus flavored. This is just going to confuse people!" Tao shakes his head like a dog in flea bitten distress and hugs his clipboard to his chest.

"It's not confusing at all, it makes total sense." Key peers up through his glasses like Tao just suggested they serve unsweetened Koolaid in lieu of the punch specially prepared with Baekhyun's grandmother's secret recipe. "This prom dance is a socially institutionalized mating ritual, and punch is nothing more than a sugar spiked aphrodisiac. So what better way to set the mood for pheromone production than by decorating with a tribute to pomegranates, the ancient symbol of fertility?"

"Excuse me, what?" Tao is so scandalized by Key's matter of fact explanation that he chokes on the lump of sherbet he is sampling from a paper cup. Jonghyun rushes over to thump him on the back to dislodge it, glaring all the while in Key's direction.

Key just shrugs his batik silk poncho back into place, slightly off one shoulder. "Sometimes a little TMI is good for the soul. Be right back kicking Chul for twisting up the streamers too much. I told him not wind them so tightly!"

Key stomps away as Baekhyun shakes his head with a small sigh. “Sorry, Tao. I told him the fruit decorations were weird. We’ll put up a sign listing the ingredients of the punch, though, so don’t worry about it.”

“‘M ok.” Tao nods as his tongue darts out to swipe the last drips of sherbet foam from the taste testing cup. “‘S delicious, by the way.” He hums in delight as he licks his lips, too. Kris nods along in enthusiastic approval even though he hasn’t actually tasted the punch for himself his gaze caught on the kitten swipes of Tao’s tongue, Jonghyun notices with a sigh.

In Jonghyun’s opinion, there are entirely too many hormones already perfuming the air with or without fertility symbol decorations, but of course no one asked him. It’s Key and Heechul’s senior year so Jonghyun can kind of understand why they feel the need to go all out, but they had better think up some alternative explanation in case the principal swings by and asks for a tour of the decorations.

“Hey Jjongg hyung, could you help me with this for a sec?”

“What?” Jonghyun swivels on his heel to find Yixing struggling with bunches of white tulle. He’s trying to attach sweeps of it to the garden arch set up over the red carpet near the door.

“Ah, is this the backdrop our guests can use for their photos? It looks great!” Jonghyun holds up his thumbs in approval, glad that at least one corner of the room hasn’t been covered in weird symbols and glow in the dark glitter.

“Yeah, it’ll be great once I can--get it to--!” Yixing breaks off with a grunt as he struggles to reach the top of the arch on tiptoe. He almost knocks the whole frame down on himself but Jonghyun catches the swaying arch before it can topple.

“Hang on, let me--” Jonghyun grabs a nearby chair and drags it under the arbor. He’s no taller than Yixing, but standing on the seat he can reach the top of the arch easily.

“Here’s the fishing line, just tie it in bunches.”

“Like this?” Jonghyun can’t see if the swags are even, but Yixing coaches him from the ground as he knots the slippery nylon around the sections of tulle. The third bunch gives him a bit of trouble though, and Jonghyun realizes he should have stepped down to move the chair closer just as the legs start to teeter. Before he tips over a pair of warm hands clasp his ankles and steady his stance on the swaying chair.

“Be careful, hyung.”

“Oh! Thanks. Sorry…!” Jonghyun can’t see Yixing’s face around the bundle of tulle in his arms, but he’s grateful for the fabric in the way because it hides his blush as his face starts to heat up in embarrassment.

Jonghyun isn’t a rookie event coordinator--he headed up the decorating committee last year and even single handedly hung the streamers after his co-chair, Sungmin, came down with the flu the week of the dance. In other words, Jonghyun should’ve known better than to knock himself off balance, but lucky for him Yixing was there to catch him.

“Ok, does it look even? I think we’re done with the tulle.”

“Yup, looks fabulous!” Yixing releases his ankles to give Jonghyun a hand down from the chair. “Hm, what do you think if we added some fairy lights to the arch? I was thinking for the photos that--”

“Ooh, lights! Great idea, Xing! I think we have some in the storage closet. I just have to go check with Mrs. Lee!” Jonghyun grabs his phone and dashes for the door. He can catch the art teacher before she goes home if he sprints back to the main building.

“Hey, we need some masking tape! Can you grab a roll while you’re over there?” The blast from Heechul’s megaphone nearly trips Jonghyun with surprise, but he nods to Heechul without turning back. When Jonghyun is on a mission to turn an event into a magical experience there is no time to waste on chitchatting.
