[TEAM THREE] ICE CREAM SHOP PART 3

Hello, hello~ I'm continuing the ice cream shop au that [livejournal.com profile] nachtegael prompted for me a few weeks ago. I finally got to the part where Joonmyun shows up. My apologies ahead of time because I'm still terrible at writing exo people. Anyway, here's part one and part two

“That’s his responsibility as group mama, after all,” Yabu said as he placed another box into Yamada’s outstretched waiting hands, and then disappeared back inside of his refrigerated delivery truck.

Yamada chuckled as he placed the box on the little handcart he used to move the ice cream containers inside. Yabu always showed up precisely on time each Monday morning to deliver whichever flavors of ice cream Takaki had decided they were running low on.

“Group mama?” Yamada repeated. “I don’t think Takaki would appreciate you calling him that. I thought the proper term was dungeon master?”

Yabu returned with another box labeled strawberry cheesecake. “Not the way Takaki plays the game,” he answered with a laugh. Instead of handing the box to Yamada, he hopped out of the truck and deposited it on the top of the stack himself. “You really should come play with us sometime,” he continued. “The rules seem complicated at first, but they’re not so bad once you get used to it. Also Takaki and I’ll be there along with Hikaru and Tottsu and Daiki. You know all those guys, right?”

“Yeah, I see Hikaru here all the time,” Yamada answered and then spun around to open the back door of the shop to hide the frown he couldn’t keep from creeping onto his face. “And I’ve met the other guys once or twice.” Truthfully, he had met Daiki more than twice but he didn’t want to get into that story right now. He gripped the handcart to wheel it inside.

“Oh wait!” Yabu said, temporarily forgetting the topic of his weekly Dungeons & Dragons game night. “I’ve got one more container for you. A new flavor!” Excited, he jumped back inside the truck and rummaged through his boxes.

Yamada forgot about the worried feeling that had just begun bubbling up inside him and replaced it with curiosity at the mention of new ice cream. It had been a few months since Takaki had last felt adventurous enough to try serving something new. Yamada craned his neck into the truck to get a glimpse at the box before Yabu brought it out.

“Here you go!” Yabu said and deposited the box into Yamada’s arms. Caught slightly off guard, he took a step backwards to get used to the extra weight he was suddenly holding.

“Cake Batter,” he read out loud. “Have you tried this one?”

Yabu pulled the door of his truck closed with a loud metallic thunk. “Haven’t had the chance yet. Let me know if it’s any good.” He rattled the latch to make sure it was completely shut and locked.

“I will!” Yamada promised. He wheeled the hand cart through the open door.

“See you next Monday,” Yabu said and gave him a grin that accented his high cheekbones. “Or maybe sooner if you come to game night.”

“I’ll think about it,” Yamada said, but he knew that was a lie. It would be a bad idea to see Daiki right now. Not before he talked to… him. He shook his head to shake off the unpleasant thoughts beginning to invade his mind again and instead focused on stocking up the storage freezer with his new shipment of ice cream. He had half an hour before opening so he took his time placing the new boxes inside, letting the frigid air sink into his skin. He felt more awake now that he was slightly shivering from the cool temperatures.

Once everything was in its proper places, he took the new cake batter ice cream container and lugged it out to the counter so all the customers would be able to see it. He removed the container of butter pecan since it hadn’t been very popular lately and slid the new stuff into the empty slot, enjoying the fact that the ice cream gave off a pleasant scent like its namesake. Glancing at the clock, he saw that he still had some time to spare before he had to unlock the front door, so he grabbed a label and carefully printed out the name of the flavor in large letters that even small children would be able to read.

Monday mornings were never usually busy, so Yamada had entirely too much time to think once he had finished sorting through their variety of toppings. His mind kept drifting back to Yabu’s game night invitation. He’d never played before but it had always sounded like fun from Yabu’s stories and what little he had heard from Takaki. His boss never talked about it much because as he insisted, “what happens in Yabu’s basement, stays in Yabu’s basement.” (Hikaru had been in the shop once when Takaki declared that and complained “don’t make it sound so dirty!”)

Yamada actually would go to the D&D game night if not for the fact that Daiki would be there. Things might get really awkward, especially if Daiki had found out what Yamada had done.

No, Yamada cut off that dangerous train of thought. He was not going to dwell on his guilty feelings right now. He was pretty sure that there was something he needed to restock or rearrange or something. Maybe he should make sure there were enough ice cream cones. The stack did sort of look like it was leaning to one side.

The front door bell jingled, making him jump at the unexpected interruption. A friendly looking guy about his age, maybe a little older, was standing inside. He had a cell phone pressed to his ear so he hung back from the counter while he finished his call, shooting an apologetic glance Yamada’s way.

“Are you sure it’s not supposed to be making a beeping noise?” He paused and waited for the answer on the other end. “Yeah that is weird. What the heck were you trying to microwave anyway?” Another pause and Yamada watched the guy’s eyebrows shoot up his forehead in surprise. “Why would you even—? You know what, Sehun, I don’t even want to know. Just unplug it or something. And keep an eye on it just in case it bursts into flames or something.” The guy put his hand to his forehead in exasperation. “I don’t know—” He moved his hand to cover up the speaker of the phone and turned to face Yamada. “You wouldn’t happen to know the number for the fire department, would you?”

“Uh,” Yamada shook his head. He wondered if he should try to dig out the phone book buried somewhere in Takaki’s office. But the guy had already returned to his phone conversation and was reassuring his friend on the other end again.

“Well, try not to break anything else before I get back, okay?” He said his goodbyes and ended the call with a long sigh, but then he stepped up the counter with a friendly smile. “Sorry about that. We just moved here and my roommate might be having a bit of trouble settling in.”

“Where did you move from?”

“Korea,” the guy answered, eyes shining brightly. “Sehun and I are in an exchange program so we’ll be studying at the university here for a year.”

Yamada smiled with a sudden feeling of happiness that surged through him. He’d travelled to Korea a few times and really loved the place. Maybe he could have a chance to get to know this guy and his friend. (And maybe they could even go eat at the local Korean restaurant together sometimes. Inoo had refused ever since the kimchi jjigae incident of doom from last year.)

“My roommate is an architecture grad student there, so I know the place pretty well. I’m Yamada Ryosuke, by the way. Welcome to our town.”

“I’m Kim Joonmyun. Nice to meet you!”

They both smiled at each other until the silence stretched on a little too long and became awkward. And Yamada finally remembered he had a job to do. “So, uh, would you like some ice cream?” He gestured towards the selection.

“Oh! Yes,” Joonmyun blinked as he remembered why he’d stopped in here. “Just something small. Do you have any suggestions?”

Yamada couldn’t hide his grin. “Do I ever!” Ice cream recommendations were half the fun of this job. “We’ve got your standard flavors, of course, but also some more unusual varieties…” He continued on, explaining the details and main ingredients of each option until he wrapped it all up with the new cake batter one. He felt his face heat up a bit in embarrassment once he realized that he’d been talking way too much. But Joonmyun didn’t seem to mind at all. In fact, he listened intently the whole time, nodding at all the appropriate parts.

“You really sold me on the cake batter,” Joonmyun said, pointing to the container. “Can I have just half a scoop though? I’ll pay for a whole one, I’ve just got to get the grocery store soon and then home before Sehun burns the apartment down.”

Yamada scooped out the appropriate amount and typed in half price in the cash register. “Special new student discount. Today only,” he explained as he whacked the side of the register to unstick the drawer again.

“Thank you!” Joonmyun took a bite of his ice cream while he waited for his change. “Wow, this is excellent.”

Yamada passed a napkin to Joonmyun since the ice cream looked like it was melting a little faster than usual. “Hey…” he began, suddenly having an idea. “Do you need someone to show you around town? I’ll be free after work today.”

Joonmyun’s eyes widened at the sudden offer, but not in a bad way. “That would be great! I’ve already gotten lost so many times in the three days we’ve been here. You wouldn’t happen to know where the grocery store is, do you?”

Yamada laughed. “Take a left at the corner. You can’t miss it.”

After Joonmyun had finished his ice cream, he left the store with a friendly wave and a promise to be back to meet Yamada once his shift was done. Once the door swung shut, Yamada glanced at the clock and was pleased to see that more time had passed than he thought. He reached for a strawberry since he was alone again. A new face in town was perfect. It was just the distraction he needed.
