[ Team Five ] Prom Queeng 3.5

so this is supposed to be the last part of the prom au but I don't have time to complete the last part this week;; I brush it up and post the completed thing on my ao3 as soon as I can <3;;

Taemin will get anything he wants. This is just how the universe works. Jonghyun knows this and has more or less reconciled himself to the fact. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t bother him just a little, just in principle, the way everyone gives into his charms as a matter of course.

For example, Taemin doesn’t even have to reserve his ride to prom. The local car rental agency promised to dispatch the only limo in town to pick him up in his leopard print tux. Usually the limo is reserved for the senior couple most likely to win the titles of Prom King and Queen (or both), but even though Taemin is an underclassman and not escorting anyone other than himself the rental agency considered him the worthiest candidate for use of the vehicle on prom night, despite the fact Taemin never bothered to apply for a reservation.

“We were touched when we heard of this young man’s inspiration story, and deeply empathize with his personal pilgrimage to understand and appreciate himself for who he is,” Park Yoochun, co-manager of the rental agency had explained when Yixing interviewed him for the school newsletter article publicizing the dance. “It’s tough to be yourself as a teen, but we at Then You Speed Up Motors would like the community to recognize how dedicated we are to the safety of our youth, both out on the road and deep down inside.”

Sure enough, once the limo arrives at the school gym on prom night out steps Taemin in the suit Jonghyun linked him. Jonghyun watches from the entrance as he struts up the stairs on the red “carpet” Key and Heechul improvised out of several vinyl tablecloths leftover from Valentine’s Day clearance at the discount party store. “Pilgrimage” is about the last word Jonghyun would associate with his image. Taemin, with a matching leopard print headband holding his tousled blonde waves out of his kohl lined eyes, looks more like a runway model than a high school kid showing up to prom without a date but he owns his swagger as he approaches the entrance.

A barrage of cell phone camera flashes go off as he tops the steps, the photographic souvenirs of curious neighbor ladies and the majority of student population that make up Taemin’s unofficial fan club (of which Jongin is enthusiastic president).

“You look great, Taemin-ah!” Jongin says as his boyfriend passes by the crowd of well wishers gathered on the steps. “Fighting for the crown tonight!”

Jonghyun has no idea when or how the rumor started (perhaps because of the traditional associations with limo he arrived in), but everyone has been whispering for days that Taemin is a favorite to win one of the prom royalty titles tonight.

“Nice suit, hyung,” he says with a cool nod to Jonghyun as he steps into the gym. Jonghyun is stationed at the entrance, DSLR in hand, to photograph the new arrivals under the archway he helped Yixing decorate.

“Thank you,” Jonghyun says with a flip of his hair because his mint green tux is quite fabulous, and so far no one else has dared to show up in an ensembles that infringes upon his stylistic originality. “Now say ‘cheese’!”

Jonghyun snaps a few solid shots of Taemin, first facing the camera with his trademark smolder and then angling himself to show off the cut of his suit and the lines of his slender legs. For his final pose, Taemin whips out a hand mirror and gazes lovingly into the eyes of the special person he asked to be his date. Jonghyun tries to hold the camera steady and not gag audibly.

Next in line for pictures are Joonmyun and Minho, who take both their status as a couple and also individually as ulzzangs of the school quite seriously. Jonghyun poses them under the faery lights of the archway arm in arm and makes sure to get a decent full body shot to document their perfect outfit coordination, from their matching red suits to the white patent leather shoes on their feet and the toothy smiles on their attractive faces. After them come Jongin and Chanyeol, who look like piano keys in their reverse color coordination. Jonghyun poses them back to back to show off their bromance, Jongin’s trim shoulders in his black sateen dress coat leaning up against Chanyeol’s in cream colored silk tails.

By the time Jonghyun has photographed all the couples and groups of friends in line, the party’s in full swing. Kris is knocking elbows with Jongdae as they jam out in the DJ booth and the dance floor is packed beneath the swirl of the colored light balls Heechul rented for the night. Jonghyun caps the lens on his camera before squeezing into the crush of bodies but leaves the power on so he can take candids as he prowls the event hall for strategic angles to capture the highlights of the evening.

A bit of polite shoving gets him halfway across the basketball court to the refreshments table in the back. Baekhyun gives him a thumbs as he ladles out punch refills and Jonghyun snaps a close up of one of the sherbet teddy bears from Chanyeol’s Rilakkuma molds. The psychedelic swirls of the the sherbet complement the fizzy tang of the punch when Jonghyun takes a gulp from the cup Baekhyun hands him. He takes a deep breath after he swallows, trying to relax under the exciting blur of colored lights and happy faces surrounding him in a crowd.
