[Team SONIC] up through the ranks
Starting word from here.
"Not necessary," Liyin said in a clipped, business-like voice. "I can take care of the matter by myself. Agent Chen should remain here to oversee the removal of the kidnapper."
The supervisor of their three-man recovery team voiced his acknowledgement of her decision through their earpieces, and Jongdae looked up sharply from where he was crouched, tying up the kidnapper's arms behind the back of chair.
All he saw was her retreating back as she stepped out of the holding room, the clicks of the heels of her boot fading into the distance.
"So responsible, she is," Amber commented through her mouthful of bubblegum. "She's always been like that, taking on the clean-up jobs solo."
"Doesn't she trust us?" Jongdae asked, turning his attention back to the thick ropes he had been working with before he'd been distracted. "Wouldn't it be easier and faster to have all three of us do the final sweep?"
Amber chortled. "This is the first time you've worked with her, isn't it?"
Jongdae shrugged, not wanting to confirm that yes, it was his first time working with Liyin. He found it mortifying that even though he had graduated the Academy with one of the highest scores in its history, it had taken him so long — three years, three — to work with one of the Agency's best agents while his fellow graduates had already completed multiple missions with other top-tier agents.
"You should be honoured," Amber said, her tone simple and light.
"How so?" Jongdae grouched, tugging the knot extra tight. "I find it hard to feel special when it's taken me three years to do something the other graduates of my class managed to do in one and a half."
"Our team leader doesn't choose just anyone," his teammate replied. "She's very particular about who she works with — you have to be the absolute best of the best for her to choose you for her missions. So feel honoured, Agent Chen: you're the first of your graduating class to work with a member of the Elite 4."
"A member of the what?" Jongdae spluttered.
